Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters in the Harry Potter books or Movies J. K. Rowling's own them . I did make up Bethany and her deceased mom Elizabeth Prince Tonks and dad Timmothy (Tim) Tonks.
Chapter one: Bethany double life!
It is August thirty first, 1991 and Bethany is shopping in Diagon Alley with her aunt Andromeda Tonks and Cousin Nympadora Tonks for her schools supplies. They have just walk out of Gringotts wizarding bank, when Bethany sees Harry Potter walking by her with Hagrid the gatekeeper at Hogwart school of witchcraft and wizards. She stops walking and stares at Harry and Hagrid. When Harry sees that a girl has stop walking and that she is staring at him, he walks over to her and stops in front of her. Hagrid, Andromeda and Nympadora walk over to Harry and Bethany. Harry’s see that she is looking at his lighting blot shape scar on his forehead. She knew that Harry Potter was starting at Hogwart that year, but she hope not to see him yet seeing that she is two years old then him and is just starting there too, but the reason she was hoping not to see him was that she was at his parent’s house the day they were killed. She was playing hide and seek with Lily and James Potter and was hiding in the closet in Harry room when Lord Voldemort show up. She stays hiding because see had already seen Voldemort kill her parents a few days before. As she was hiding in the closet and she saw Lord Voldemort’s kill Lily through the crack in the door. She stops staring at Harry when her cousin tap her on the shoulder.
I am Harry Potter. What is your name and do you know me because you could not stop looking at me?
My name is Bethany Tonks and yeah I know you when you were a baby and till you went to live with your aunt and uncle at the age of one.
How do you remember me then, because I do not remember you?
Because I was three years old then.
So you going to Hogwart for you third year then?
Bethany shake her head No, I am just starting Hogwart this year, I had personal issues that keep me from starting two years ago.
So Bethany that would make you thirteen years old right?
Yeah I Just turn thirteen today.
Hagrid taps Harry on his right shoulder to get his attention.
I hate to break up the reunion but we need to get to Gringotts wizarding bank and get your money Harry.
Ok, Hagrid and nice to meet you again Bethany.
Yeah, see you at school, Harry have fun getting you school thing.
Harry and Hagrid walk towards the bank and Bethany, Andromeda and Nympadora walk down the street and into Quality Quidditch Supplies. Bethany and her aunt heads over to look at the new Nimbus 2000. While Nympadora sees a friend and goes over to talk to her. Bethany looks over at her cousin then back at her aunt who is holding a new Nimbus 2000 in her hands and give it a good look over. Bethany leans towards her aunt and whisper quietly to her.
I do not know why I can’t take Nympadora old broom to school, see that it not for playing Quidditch, but for slayer related business and beside first years are not even allowed to have brooms.
Bethany’s aunt looks at her daughter and then at her niece before speaking.
Because Nympadora needs her broom for Auror school that is way.
But she says she does not mind if I used her broom, she will just buy a new one.
No, I buying you a new one, you had enough hand me down from your cousin in your life time since you come to live with us and for once I am buying you all new items for school.
But I’m not your daughter and I am ok with hand me downs Aunt Andromeda.
You are my niece and your mom and dad left Ted and I money to buy you school supplies when you start at Hogwart, so let me buy you new items this year.
All right, I let you buy me new thinks this year.
I think this Nimbus 200 we do just fine, I am going to go pay for it.
Why Andromeda goes and pays for the broom, Bethany walks over to her cousin. Once her aunt had finish pay for the broom and the sale person had warped it up and put it into a large bag. Bethany, Andromeda and Nympadora left Quality Quidditch Supplies and walks over to Ollivander's to buy Bethany some wands. Both Andromeda and Nympadora take a set in the chair by the door and Bethany walks up to the counter and rings the bell to get Mr. Ollivander attention. Mr. Ollivander walks downstairs and passes Nympadora and Andromeda and heads behind the counter. At the sometime Andromeda stand up and walks up to the counter next to Bethany. Mr. Ollivander smiles at Andromeda and her niece and Nympadora will set in one of the chairs.
I see that Bethany is finally starting at Hogwart this year and I see you change the look of you hair by add pink highlights since the last time I saw you Bethany, did you dye your hair or are you a Metamorphmagus Like Nympadora?
Yeah I am starting Hogwart and I want a change from my plain light brown hair. I did not dye my hair I am a Metamorphmagus like my cousin.
Well I like you hair with the pink highlights and today so a great day, I finally get to sale Bethany a wand and on the someday as I sale Harry Potter his first wand too.
Andromeda leans over the counter and speak softly to Mr. Ollivander, Bethany is going to need a couple of wands one for school and a few for her slayer duty.
Oh yes, I remember talking to you about that and yes I did make seven wands with cores that I normally don’t use for her to try out. First lets try wands out for school. First I will have you try out this 12 in. wand that is made from rosewood and a Unicorn Tail for the core.
Bethany smiles at Mr. Ollivander and takes the wand from him. She then moves the wand up and down but nothing moves. Mr. Ollivander takes the wand back from Bethany and puts the wand away. He picks up another wand box. He then hand her a box with a 15 1/2 in rosewood wand with a Unicorn Tail as it core.
I know this wand still has the some core as the last one, but I think that is the core that would work for your school wand.
Ok I will give it a try Mr. Ollivander.
Bethany tries that wand and gets the book on the counter to move a little. Mr. Ollivander shakes his head and takes the wand from Bethany. He puts that wand away and goes over to the back shelve and grab a black box. He walks over to the counter and hands Bethany the next box, which is 15 1/2 in rosewood wand with a phoenix father as the core. Bethany picks the wand up and boxes go fly everywhere.
That is not the wand for you. Lets try this 15 1/2 in Willow with a Dragon Heartstring core go head and give it a try.
I hope this wand works Mr. Ollivander?
Bethany picks up the wand and the area around her light up in a gold color. Bethany, Andromeda, Nympadora and Mr. Ollivander smile at each other. Mr. Ollivander box up the wand and put it into a bag and he marks the first wand down in his book. He then grabs the first box out from under the courter that is 15 1/2 in wand made from Willow with a Leprechaun hair core.
Now I do not think this wand will work for you, because Leprechaun hair cores tend to favor only the Irish but we will see if it works.
Bethany nods her head yes and picks up the wand and once again boxes go fly everywhere. Bethany then tries the 15 1/2 in wand that is made of willow with the demiguise hair core next but nothing happens. Mr. Ollivander then hand Bethany’s another 15 1/2 in wand that is made of willow with a Hippogriff Talon core to try, when Bethany flick the wand it make Mr. Ollivander hair turn green. He takes the wand form her and hand her another 15 1/2 in wand that is made of Willow with a Runespoor Fang core and the room turn a gold color again. She also buy two more 15 1/2 in wands made from willow one with Chimaera Scale core and one with Ashwinder Ash core (which cast awesome protection charms.) Bethany’s aunt pays for the four wands and Mr. Ollivander hand the bag with the wands in it to Bethany. The three ladies walk out of Ollivander’s and walk down the street and into Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions. Madam Malkin looks up from fitting Hermione Granger robe and smile at the ladies when they walk into the store.

Andromeda over the counter and speak softly to Mr. I will be with you in a few minutes Mrs. Tonks. That is fine Madam Malkin. Three minutes later a girl with long brown hair walks over to Bethany and stop in front her. Bethany smiles at the girl and the girls smiles back at her. Hi my name Bethany Tonks, what is your name? My name Hermione Granger, are you getting robes for Hogwart school of witchcraft and wizardry? Yeah, I am and nice to meet you Hermione. It nice to meet you to Bethany and I am start my first year Hogwart. I am so excite, because I am the first witch in my family. Are you the only witch in your family or is everyone one in your family witches and wizards? My Mom pure blood, my dad was muggle born but get chosen to go to Hogwart. My dad brother also went to Hogwart. My aunts are also pure blood. Hermione mom and dad walk up behind her and then the three of them leave the shop. Bethany gets fitted for her robes and cloak and also gets a point hat along with a pair of protective gloves. When her robes and cloak are ready, they pay for them, then Andromeda, Nympadora and Bethany go and gets strawberry ice cream cones from Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlou. Once they have getting they ice cream they walks down Diagon Alley to head to Flourish and Blotts. When the three of them walk into Flourish & Blotts Nympadora head to the section where the textbooks she needs are and Bethany and Andromeda go over to the section where Hogwart first year textbooks are location at. Bethany looks down at the list of books she needs to buy and see the first one on the list is Standard book of spell grade one which is by Miranda Gosghawk. She has just grab a book off the shelve when she hear Mrs. Wesley fighting with her youngest son Ron about having to buy used books and not new books. Bethany quietly grabs a copy of a history of magic by Bathilda Bagshot, a beginner’s guide to transfiguration by Emeric Switch, one thousand magical herbal and fungi by Phyllida Spore, magical drafts and potions by Arsenius Jigger, Fantastic beast and where to find them by Newt Scamander and the dark farce guide to self protection by Quentin Trimble. Andromeda goes to pay for the books and Bethany goes to find her cousin to see if she is ready to go. Bethany finds that her cousin had already pay for her books and she is waiting for her mom and Bethany to finish up in the book store. Bethany and Andromeda leave the book store and head to the Cauldron Shop, they only in the shop for two minutes because the only item Bethany’s need from there is a size two Pewter cauldron. Nympadora goes to the Apothecary and picks her cousin up two set of crystal phials, bass scale. Nympadora then goes to one of the street stall and buy Bethany the telescope she needs for school. Nympadora meets up with her mom and cousin at Eeylops Owl Emporium. When she walks into the store, she sees Bethany is looking at one of the white snow owls. Once Bethany had chosen the white snow owl that she wanting Nympadora, Andromeda and Bethany head to the Leaky Cauldron for some dinner. The three ladies are walking over to a table and take when Harry and Hagrid walk into the Leaky Cauldron and come and joins them for dinner. As Harry is walking over the table that Bethany, her cousin and her are set at Bethany puts her hands into her jean pocket. Hagrid and Harry take and set then the five of them order their food. When the food gets there and everyone as start to eat Harry looks over at Bethany. Bethany can I ask you something about when you were three years old? Yeah you can Harry, what is it that you want to know? Hagrid says that you were at my parents house the night they dead, did my parents try to fight back against Lord Voldemort? Yes, they try to fight back, but nothing could stop Lord Voldemort . Hagrid also told me that your mom and dad were kill two nights before my mom and dad by Lord Voldemort is that way you were staying with my parents? Yeah Harry that was way I was staying at your parent’s house! As Bethany is answering, Harry questions her hair change from light brown with pink highlights to a light gray color. Nympadora puts her right arm around her cousin and whispers into her ear that she was doing the right thing by answers Harry questions. When they finish eating and talking Bethany, Nympadora and Andromeda head home for the night.
The Next morning Bethany wakes up at the creak of dawn and quietly finishes packing, because she shares a bedroom with her cousin and Nympadora who is still sleeping. First Bethany packs her school supplies, textbooks and clothing into one truck. She then packs her slayer supplies into a second truck and has to pack all her slayers relate books into a third truck. She has just lock up the third truck when Nympadora rolls over in her bed to face Bethany. Nympadora opens up her eyes and looks at her younger cousin.
Bethany: Did I wake you up, Nympadora?
Nympadora: Yeah, but it all right and how many times do I have to tell you Bethany call me Tonks, I hate being called Nympadora.
Bethany: Ok, I will call you Tonks for now on.
Bethany and her cousin then leave their bedroom and head into the Kitchen for breakfast. After breakfast everyone gets ready to take Bethany to the train station and to meet up with the Wesley’s family once they get the train station.

Chapter 5: A Surprise
Matt and Sophie were both asleep when I returned to my flat. It was kind of cute. Sophie was curled up on the foot of his bed, the copy of Beedle the Bard next to her head. I reached down to pick it up and she opened her eyes and yawned.
“When's Mummy coming back?” she asked.
“In an hour or so,” I replied, “Do you want to help me make dinner? I bet she'll be back just when it's ready.”
“Yeah!” Sophie said excitedly.
She ran ahead of me into the kitchen and was already wearing an apron that was way too large for her by the time I got there.
Sophie absolutely loves to cook. I'm sure that in a few years she'll be a better cook than I am. Mum always told me that cooking was like potions, but I never got the hang of it. Maybe Sophie will be good at both.
We decided to make chicken parmesan, one of Sophie's favorites. Her favorite thing to do was grate the cheese and half of it wound up in her mouth. She grinned sheepishly as I took the remaining cheese and I had to hide my laughter.
There was a knock on the door while the chicken was in the oven and Sophie made a beeline towards it. I followed her and found Victoire letting herself in.
“I snuck away,” she grinned as she picked up Sophie, “How's my little angel?”
“We're making chicken parmesan for dinner!” Sophie said excitedly, “Only I think Uncle Matt's going to sleep through it.”
“Why don't you go wake him up and see if he's hungry?” I suggested.
Victoire put Sophie down and she disappeared into the bedroom. I went into the kitchen to discover that I had nearly burnt the chicken.
“How was she?” Victoire asked as she began to set the table.
“Fine,” I said, “I found her asleep on Matt's bed when I got back. Then we made dinner.”
“Good,” Victoire smiled, “Teddy and I are thinking of enrolling her in a preschool program.”
“This year?” I asked, “Isn't she a bit old for that?”
“We've been researching and we found one that takes kids up to age six,” Victoire said, “It's private, in London. They only go three days a week, too. Mum keeps telling me that she's bored during the day.”
I nodded as I scooped spaghetti onto all the plates. Victoire's grandmother watches Sophie most days, but she also watches a few other kids. Victoire's cousins kids, to be specific. Sophie's better off at my flat after full moons, where it's quiet.
“That would probably be good for her,” I said.
“I think so too,” Victoire replied, “It'll get her ready for next year, if we send her to Kindergarten. I think she's just bored at Grandma's. She's the oldest one there. Andrew's only two and he's closest to her age.”
Andrew was Victoire's cousin Fred's son. The rest of the kids that Victoire's grandma watched were babies.
“She needs to play with kids her own age,” I agreed, “And if it's only three days a week, some months she won't even have to miss any days.”
“Exactly,” Victoire said, “No one's going to notice. Kids get sick a lot. No one will pay attention that she misses a few days every few months.”
“Can you enroll this late in the school year?” I asked.
“I think we'll have to wait until after Christmas,” Victoire said, “So don't mention anything to her.”
“What's for dinner?”
I turned around and saw Matt slowly following Sophie into the room. He still looked utterly exhausted, with large purple bags under his eyes and a yellowish bruise on his forehead. His arm was still wrapped up in bandages and he was limping slightly.
“Chicken parmesan,” I replied, “Are you hungry enough to eat?”
“I'll probably just have spaghetti,” Matt said as he collapsed into the nearest chair.
“How are you?” Victoire asked him.
“Awful,” he muttered, “My head is killing me.”
“Here,” I set a goblet of pain potion in front of him, “I'm sure you're due for a dose.”
“Thanks,” Matt said and downed the potion.
Sophie dominated the dinner conversation. Matt was far too tired to pay attention, much less participate in the conversation. Victoire always listened to everything her daughter said, careful not to interrupt. I paid vague attention, but my mind kept wandering towards the poor Muggle who had been attacked by a werewolf. I was hungry for more information about it. Who did it? Why were they out in the open?
“Have you got any pickles?” Victoire asked as we were cleaning up the kitchen.
“Pickles?” I stared at her, “Er, possibly in the fridge, but why?”
“I just feel like a pickle,” Victoire shrugged as she looked in the fridge. “Excellent,” she grinned as she pulled out a jar.
“You're strange, you know,” I laughed.
“I know,” Victoire shrugged, “I blame it on the odd hours Ted and I keep.”
“What time is he done at work?” I asked.
“Nine,” Victoire answered as she took a bite out of one of the pickles, “But he's got the weekend off. We're visiting my parents.”
“That'll be nice,” I said as I loaded the dishwasher.
“Yep,” Victoire said as she polished off the pickle, “And then back to the grind on Monday.”
******
Monday was very chaotic. Not only did I have to catch myself up on what had gone on in the ward over the weekend, but I also had to track down the two trainee Healers who were in charge of data collection for the study Rose and I were running.
Trainee Healers basically have to do fully qualified Healers' bidding, much like assistant brewers. This often included data collection for Healers who were running studies. Luckily for me, the two trainees involved with my study had actually wanted the job.
Finding them was often a whole day process since they were never in the same place for more than ten minutes. I finally managed to find one after I finished up my clinic hours at eleven o'clock.
Lianne Dorsay had been studying to become a Healer for just over a year and was very interested in the research aspect of it. Her short stature, round face, and curly brown hair gave her the look of someone still in Hogwarts, but she was far more mature than she looked.
“Lianne!” I shouted as I ran to catch up with her.
She turned around and smiled when she saw me. “Amy! I've been looking for you.”
“Where are you headed?” I asked.
“Spell damage,” she replied, “They're short handed today.”
“I'll walk with you,” I said as we continued down the corridor, “How did data collection go?”
“Fine,” Lianne said, “Eight people showed up and none of them had any issues with the charms and potions.”
“Good,” I said, “All the data look usable?”
“Yep,” Lianne said, “It's all entered into the book.”
“Thanks,” I said as we got into one of the lifts.
“No problem,” Lianne replied.
The study Rose and I were conducting was slow going. We could only collect data once a month and we usually only got five or so participants each time. I had yet to get enough data to reach any conclusions, so we kept going at it.
I didn't have any time to look at the data that day. Morris was busy with the Muggle who had begun to come to terms with the fact that he was now a werewolf and did not have much time to deal with the rest of our patients. I spent my day with the rest, healing various burns, bites, and stings, and administering potions to the people who had had to spend the night.
Five o'clock arrived and I was finally able to escape to the basement to brew. It wasn't that I hated working with patients; it just got draining after a while. Spending my evening hours in solitude with only simmering solutions for company was a nice break.
Even while my newest version of Wolfsbane is being tested, I still have to brew regular Wolfsbane. It's a month long process for each batch and there are not many Brewers who can manage it. Three at St. Mungo's can, including Morris and I. There's an old witch who can brew it as well, but she's getting on in years and is looking to retire.
“Merlin, Amy, what is that smell?”
I jumped and turned to the door. Victoire was standing there, with her hand over her mouth, looking a tad green. I glanced at the clock. I'd been brewing for nearly two hours.
“Wolfsbane,” I said as I stood up stirred one of the cauldrons, “Same as always.”
“Really?” Victoire said, “Did you do anything funny to it?”
“No,” I shook my head curiously, “This is the normal kind. Are you sure you're ok?”
“Fine, really,” Victoire shrugged, “The smell of Wolfsbane never makes me feel ill. Except-”
She cut herself off and we looked at each other. A look of horror appeared on her face and she slowly sat down on the nearest chair, looking greener than before.
“Let's get out of here,” I said, grabbing her arm and pulling her out of the room. I quickly locked it and we headed to the nearest loo. Luckily no one was in it.
Victoire leaned against one of the sinks and slowly shook her head. “Why didn't I realize it before. Vomiting in the morning, wanting pickles of all things after dinner....”
“How long has it been going on?” I asked.
“Few days,” Victoire sighed, “And I'm late. I thought it was stress. Ted's been working longer shifts, Sophie's growing up and I'm trying to decide whether to send her to school. I just, it never crossed my mind. Ted and I weren't going to do this again! We swore!”
I stood perfectly still and didn't say a word. Victoire looked worried and slightly scared. I couldn't blame her. After Sophie was born, Victoire and Ted decided not to have anymore children. It was too risky. There was very little known about children who were born as werewolves and every case seemed to be different. Whose to say if Victoire and Ted had a second child the pregnancy would go as well as it did for Sophie?
“You don't know for sure,” I said quietly, knowing without a doubt that she was pregnant. Nothing made Victoire feel ill, ever. It was one of the traits that made her an excellent Healer.
When Victoire was pregnant with Sophie, the smell of Wolfsbane made her positively ill. If she was near it too long, it made her dizzy, gave her a headache, and made her vomit. The same thing happened to Matt whenever he was around it. At first she thought it was just one of those weird pregnancy things, but once she found out Sophie was a werewolf, she knew otherwise.
“Ted's going to be so angry,” Victoire groaned, “We agreed, no more kids!”
“It's half his fault!” I rolled my eyes at the thought of Ted ever getting angry. I could count the number of times he'd been angry on one hand. He and Victoire never fought.
“I guess,” Victoire giggled, “But still, Amy this is so bad. What if the kid's like Sophie? Or, what if, you know, if the kid's like Matt.”
“Then you'll deal with it,” I told her, “You guys are great with Sophie. She's such an awesome kid, Victoire. Honestly, there's kids who don't have lycanthropy who are more difficult than she is. And if the kid's like Matt? Well, then even more incentive for me to get this potion right.”
“I know, I know,” Victoire sighed, “We can do it, it's just is it even fair for the kid?”
“Plenty of kids deal with things that aren't fair, many worse than lycanthropy,” I said quietly, “Look, first you've got to take a pregnancy test. Tomorrow, right when you get to work.”
Victoire nodded. “All right. I'm not saying a word to Teddy until I know for sure.”
“Makes sense,” I agreed, “Is he going to the meeting?”
“Yeah,” Victoire said and glanced at her watch. “Merlin, we'd better leave now. Your mum'll murder us if we're late.”
******
The Lycanthropic Children's Foundation is a very small organization that meets every Monday at my parents' house. There are only six members, which is all we really need for what we do. Basically, we obtain donations and then people with lycanthropic children seek us out, usually through St. Mungo's. Most of our donations come in the form of spare change tossed into the containers we have set out at various shops, and large anonymous donations. The money is then given out anonymously, through me. I have access to the children's information through work anyway, so applications are sent to me and then I present them, omitting names.
Besides Victoire, Mum, Teddy, and I there were two other members. Joe Gordon was our Treasurer and Betsy Wrigley worked with Teddy to seek donations.
Everyone else was there when we arrived, even Teddy and he was usually late. Mum had set out a tray of biscuits and a pot of tea.
“Amy, Victoire, you're nearly late,” she said as we entered the living room.
“Sorry,” I replied, “Work.”
“Well, you're here now,” Mum said, “Anyway, I was about to tell everyone that we received another 100 Galleon donation the other day.”
“Brilliant!” I grinned. Donations that large were rare.
Once everyone had announced their excitement over the donation, we spent the remainder of the meeting deciding who to give it to. It was always so difficult to decide who to give donations to. Every single one of the kids deserved something, but we just did not have the funds to give everyone something.
After a bit of debating, we decided to split it between three different kids. Victoire wrote the checks and I got the envelopes ready for owling the next day.
“Does anyone else have anything to discuss?” Mum asked.
“I do,” I stood up and took a deep breath. Here it goes. The proposal.
Mum looked at me curiously, but didn't say anything.
“All right,” I said, “We've spent the past few years drumming up donations and giving them to children, which is extraordinary. The money is so helpful for the kids and their families. It pays for hospital bills and Wolfsbane.
“However, I feel that we can do more, so much more. Working at St. Mungo's I've seen that these kids need more than money. They need support and so do their families. The parents feel so alone and so do the kids.
“Money helps them, it really does, but no amount of Galleons can ease the loneliness and feeling that it's you against the world. Which is why I feel that we need to expand what we do. I think we could organize support groups. One for the kids, the parents, and even siblings. I really think it would help a lot.”
I stopped and looked out at everyone. Mum and Betsy looked shocked, grins were slowly appearing on Victoire and Teddy's faces, and Joe looked skeptical.
“But if we do that, people are going to find out who the kids are,” Joe pointed out.
“Only the other people in the support groups and us, and I don't think anyone who would be attending the support groups would use that information against the kids,” I said.
“Good point,” Joe agreed.
“I think it's a great idea,” Teddy said. Victoire nodded.
“Why don't we think on it for a week and if we all still agree next week, we'll start making plans,” Mum decided.
Everyone thought that was a good idea. Mum adjourned the meeting and Betsy and Joe left shortly after that. Teddy and Victoire stuck around for a little while to eat a few more biscuits, and then left as well.
“It's going to be ok,” I whispered to Victoire as they left. She nodded and then left. She was going to have a hell of a time keeping her suspicions from Teddy; she looked so worried.
“Is everything ok with Victoire?” Mum asked as we cleaned up, “She looked preoccupied tonight.”
“It's work,” I said quietly, “Don't worry, she'll be fine.”
“The lot of you need to take a holiday,” Mum said, “You, Victoire, Teddy, your father. All of you, workaholics.”
“Healing is a time consuming profession,” I shrugged, “I knew that when I started.”
“Still, you could surely take a week and go to France or something,” Mum told me.
“What would I do in France?” I sighed, “I'd worry about my patients and lose a week of brewing. I can't afford to do that. You know that.”
Mum turned and looked at me. Her eyes looked strangely sad. “Amy, just keep in mind that it's good to take some time for yourself. If you don't, you'll regret it when you're older.”
******
“I feel like we're sixteen and trying to secretly take a pregnancy test at Hogwarts or something,” Victoire whispered to me the next morning.
Victoire had appeared in the doorway to my study five minutes earlier, clutching a paper bag in her hand and looking paler than I'd ever seen her. I immediately got up, told Morris to cover my patients until I returned, and rushed out the door.
“Well, we're not sixteen. You're twenty-nine and married. There's nothing wrong with you being pregnant,” I told her.
“Then why are we sneaking around, trying to find an empty loo?” Victoire asked.
“Do you really want to do this with strangers around?” I pointed out.
“Very true,” Victoire agreed.
We slowed down as we neared the next ladies' loo and I began to push the door open.
“Lupin! Eckerton!”
I groaned inwardly and lowered my hand. Farina. How was she always able to pop up at the worst moment?
“What are you two doing on the Magical Bugs floor?” Farina barked, “Lupin, you're due in the clinic in ten minutes!”
“Er,” I began, trying to think up a good excuse.
“I have to do something,” Victoire muttered, gesturing to the bag, “But I'll be in the clinic as soon as I can.”
Farina's eyes narrowed on the bag and then her stern face softened. I had to rub my eyes to make sure I was seeing clearly. Farina's gaze never softened. But I was seeing clearly. Farina's expression was almost sympathetic.
“Take all the time you need, Lupin,” Farina said, “Eckerton, Spell Damage is running low on Skele-Gro, I'll need you to brew more this afternoon.”
“Right,” I nodded as she walked away. I quickly opened the door to the loo, hoping no one else was inside.
“What was that about?” I asked as I peeked under all the stalls, “Ok, this one's empty.”
“No idea,” Victoire shrugged as she entered one of the stalls, “I've never seen her like that before.”
“Does she know about Sophie?” I asked.
“No,” Victoire answered, “I mean, she knows I had a difficult pregnancy but she doesn't know Sophie's got lycanthropy.”
“Do you think she's actually worried?” I asked.
“Possibly, but I find it hard to believe,” Victoire said, “I've never seen Farina show any emotion besides anger and indifference.”
“Me either,” I said as the door opened.
I turned and saw a witch with a bright green hat entering the bathroom.
“Sorry, this one's closed,” I told her, “Toilet's been regurgitating.”
“Then you should lock it!” the witch said as she left in a hurry.
She had a point, I thought as I pulled out my wand and locked the door. Victoire came out of the stall, holding a small cup and looking quite worried. She wordlessly set the cup down on one of the sinks and we stood next to each other, staring at it.
If Victoire was pregnant, the solution would emit blue hearts in ten minutes. If she wasn't pregnant, the solution would turn green and emit nothing.
“Remember when I found out I was pregnant with Sophie?” Victoire said quietly.
I nodded. I remembered that day like it was yesterday. I was the one who had first suggested to her that she may be pregnant. Victoire denied it, thinking she was just overtired and getting ill. Fresh out of Healer training, we were given the worst hours, occasionally having to pull twelve hour shifts.
We were both coming off a twelve hour shift and I insisted she come over to my flat and take the test before going home. She agreed and did. The test was positive and we were both thrilled. Ted had been on a mission and the day long wait for him to return seemed to take forever. When Victoire was finally able to tell him, he was so tired that after he woke up, he thought it had been a dream.
This was so different. Victoire had been nervous before, but that was nothing compared to now. Then, we had been hoping the test was positive. Now, we were hoping for a negative.
“I wanted a huge family, Amy,” Victoire said in a shaky voice, “I wanted at least four kids. But now...” her voice trailed off.
“I know,” I said, “But things don't always work out the way you want.”
“Amy, if this is positive-” Victoire cut herself off.
The cup was bubbling. Any second now we would know the result. I held my breath and didn't blink. Then it happened. A tiny blue heart rose above the surface and popped immediately. It was followed by more and soon the potion was bubbling and emitting heart after blue heart.
I turned and looked at Victoire. She was staring at the potion, her face as white as Nearly Headless Nick. Then, all of a sudden, she burst into tears and I put my arm around her.
“Wh-what am I g-going to do?” she sobbed, “I can't be p-pregnant again, I just c-can't. I got lucky last time, Amy. I won't get lucky again, that just d-doesn't happen!”
“Maybe it will,” I soothed, “You're going to get through this.”
“What's T-Teddy going to say?” Victoire wailed, “We swore we wouldn't d-do it again!”
“Like I said last night, this is half his fault,” I told her.
“I know, but it's not T-Teddy who's pregnant!” Victoire cried, “I'm p-pregnant!”
“Listen, we're going to go to the Ministry and tell him right now,” I said, “Take deep breaths. In and out. Teddy is not going to be mad.”
“I can't!” Victoire said as she glanced at her watch, “Merlin, I'm ten minutes late for the clinic! Farina's going to murder me!”
“No,” I shook my head, “We're going to tell Farina you've got to go home early. You saw her face when we went in here, she might actually let you.”
“N-no she won't,” Victoire sobbed, “I have to get to the clinic.”
“No,” I said a bit louder, “You're going see Teddy and then you're going to go home.”
It took another five minutes to convince Victoire to go home and then another five to calm her down. She still looked like she'd been crying for fifteen minutes, but better than before.

Sam continued on until she reached the hospital. She parked legally, and proceeded to walk toward the entrance. It wasn't until she could see the benches outside that she noticed him. She wouldn't have guessed because he had covered his brigh yellow hair with a hat and was wearing sunglasses. He moved his sunglasses down his nose and shot her a familiar penetrating stare. Sam nearly got knocked over by a car rounding past the entrance. The horn beeped and Sam waved her hand at it.
"Sorry!" she called out. She looked back at the bench. Raijin was gone. Sam felt herself flush with frustration. She power walked over to the entrance and looked around where Raijin might have gone. She wondered if he was there for the same reasons she was. It was likely. She was still annoyed that he hadn't deemed it necessary to help her and William when the were getting attacked by all those freaks the day before. Sam entered the hospital, fed up with Raijin's disappearing act, and was grabbed by the arm as she moved out of the rotating door. Once she had been brought to the edge of one of the corridors, they stopped. Raijin.
"Mirrors. And cameras." he hissed at her, pointing in one direction and then the next. "You are going to mess up everything." He moved closer to Sam, realising his body was probably being picked up by a camera to his right. "This level of noise. Understand?" he was practically nose to nose with Sam. She proceeded to mimic the way he was talking.
"Yes." she replied simply.
"Good. William is here. They have him.... locked up." Raijin was leaning in, speaking this information into Sam's ear mostly now. "And a great deal more is happening here. What is your plan? Because I have one I was just about to implement." he leaned back to study her face, his own face showed he was determined to follow through if her plan wasn't a better one. Sam feared that they might be going with whatever he had, because in all honesty, she hadn't thought this far ahead. She opened her mouth to speak. "William is talking to the FBI outside." Sam closed her eyes and slumped, realising how dumb that sounded. "I mean, he's been traveling with me telepathically. And now, he's with the agent who followed us here."
"I see." Raijin said. He turned his face to look back toward the entrance doors. "So your plan is to wait, until we know what to do about the FBI?"
"Um. Yes?" Sam said slowly.
"Um. Right. So, you're expecting a report then, soon?" Raijin asked her.
"I guess?" Sam fumbled.
Raijin sighed and rubbed at his eyes. "I think I'll go with my plan." and he moved away from her out into the hall. Sam reached out to try to stop him, but he had already disappeared. She stayed where she was, afraid of all the surveilance Raijin had warned her about. She turned within and called out internally.
"William! Raijin is here! And he's going to do something! What should I do?" Sam thought hard, trying to tug on the threads of Williams telepathic connection to her that had formed from them being connected for long periods of time. She hoped they would be enough to get his attention. Suddenly, the hospital lights when out, and the emergency lights flicked on.

Here is the sequel to In Moonlight's Shadow! I recommend you read that first if you haven't already, although it's not necessary. I'll be posting updates on this every other Sunday for the time being.
Chapter 1: Turning Thirty
The greyish potion simmered in its steel cauldron, a few bubbles rising to the surface and then popping. It was nearly boiling, but not quite. I watched it, hardly blinking. As soon as it began boiling, and not a second later, I would have to add the Wolfsbane. One eighth of a a teaspoon of it. A pinch more would ruin the entire potion. Of course, the whole potion could be useless already.
I was brewing in the basement of St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. There was a whole slew of brewing rooms in the basement. It was the best place for them since the fumes would be far away from the patients and so the brewers would be far away from the hustle and bustle of the hospital.
It was currently seven at night and since it was a Friday, most places of work were closed and their employees enjoying time off. However, I work at a hospital and hospitals never close. If I were to venture upstairs to the main part of the hospital, I would find it busy as usual.
Brewers kept more normal hours than Healers, but I am both. I had spent most of the day working in the Creature Induced Injury ward, but managed to sneak away at five in order to brew. As much as I enjoyed Healing, brewing was my passion.
I was currently brewing a variation of the Wolfsbane Potion. Wolfsbane potion had been invented decades ago and was used by werewolves to render themselves harmless during full moons. They still transformed, but lacked the aggressive qualities normally found in werewolves. However, this potion was completely useless to a small portion of werewolves.
For years, Healers and brewers have been trying to create a new version of Wolfsbane that would work for those werewolves. I had been working for the past six or seven years on the project, but had had no success so far.
The potion began to bubble more until it was at a full boil. I grabbed the small amount of Wolfsbane and tossed it into the cauldron while stirring counter-clockwise. Now I had to stir it for a half an hour.
Stirring had never struck me as boring. Plenty of brewers had complained about the amount of sitting around time and monotonous stirring, but it really never bothered me. I saw it as a time to think. After spending a day in the chaotic Creature Induced Injury ward, I needed a few hours to just sit and do mindless work like stirring.
“Amy!” someone whispered.
I jumped, nearly spilling Wolfsbane Potion all over myself. I cursed under my breath and turned around to see who had been stupid enough to interrupt my brewing. It was my best friend, Victoire, and I sighed. She knew not to interrupt me.
“Victoire,” I groaned. “I told you I'd be brewing until eight today.”
“That's what you think,” Victoire rolled her eyes and sat down on the stool next to mine.
Victoire Lupin had been my best friend since our fourth year at Hogwarts. Well, she had been a Weasley then. When she was 23, she married Teddy Lupin, another one of our friends from school. Victoire was a Healer as well, but she worked on the Spell Damage floor.
“It is what I think,” I replied as I continued stirring. “I need to have this ready for overnight simmering before I leave, so it can be tested tomorrow.”
“You do realize what day it is,” Victoire said flatly, shaking her head so that her mane of blonde hair shook.
“It's Friday, and I always stay late to brew on Fridays,” I replied.
Victoire groaned. “That's not what I meant. I meant it's October 27th! It's your birthday for Merlin's sake! Can't you put aside brewing for one measly day? I mean, you only turn 30 once.”
“Thank God,” I muttered. “And no, I can't put aside brewing. You know that.”
“I don't think you're going to miss having any brilliant breakthroughs if you don't work all night tonight,” Victoire said.
“Thanks for having faith in me,” I muttered.
“As soon as you're done with that batch, we're leaving. Everyone's at the Leaky Cauldron, waiting for you. Teddy and I have organized a birthday and halloween party. You will be there. We got a cake and everything.”
“Thanks,” I said. “Another reminder that I'm old now.”
“30 is not old.”
“Says the one who is still 29,” I said. “I'm 30 and I haven't even done anything important.”
“Hardly any witches or wizards invent world changing new potions before they're 30,” Victoire sighed. “Now finish that potion so we can get in our costumes and go.”
“Costumes?” I raised my eyebrows.
“Well, it is a halloween party, too,” Victoire replied.
“I'll go as a Healer,” I said.
“You are a Healer, you can't go as one,” Victoire said. “Now, you're going as this.”
Victoire reached into her bag and pulled out a French maid costume. I groaned inwardly. The thing looked like it would show more skin than a bathing suit.
“That is quite possibly the most cliched sexy costume on earth,” I told her.
“But it's really from France, so that cancels out the clicheness,” Victoire grinned. “I wore it years ago, but can't fit in it since having Sophie, so you get to wear it.”
“And what are you wearing?” I asked.
“This,” Victoire pulled a black robe and hat out of her bag.
“Is that a Muggle witch costume?” I asked.
“Yep,” Victoire nodded.
“So I have to wear a tiny piece of cloth while you get to be completely covered up?”
“I'm married, you're not,” Victoire replied. “Plus, Teddy's dressed as Merlin, so it matches.”
Victoire waited while I finished brewing the Wolfsbane. I purposely took a long time to clean up, but then Victoire pitched in and before I knew it I was changing into the French maid costume.
For the first time ever I was grateful that I was short. Victoire was nearly a head taller than me, so I was sure the skirt had been of the correct skimpy length on her. On me, however, it nearly came down to my knees.
Victoire had gone all out for her witch's costume. She painted her face green and affixed a fake wart to her nose. She looked disgustingly realistic for a Muggle witch. I stifled my laughter and the two of us disapparated.
We reappeared in front of the Diagon Alley side of the Leaky Cauldron. I could already hear the noise coming from inside. Victoire really must have invited everyone. I followed her into the pub and our arrival was met with loud choruses of 'happy birthday' sung in a variety of tunes.
The pub was packed. I only recognized about half of the people there. I saw a few people from work including a bunch of nurses, my boss Healer Morris Sterling, Healer Jeff Norlam, and Healer Rose Weasley. Standing around Rose were all her friends from school including my brother, Matt, and much to my surprise, his roommate Albus Potter. Al was out of the country a lot for work.
Even my parents were there. The two of them were sitting at a table, looking to be the two calmest people there. Neither of them were dressed up. Mum had a cup of tea and Dad had a bottle of something. But sitting next to Dad was the biggest surprise of all.
“Uncle Jack?” I shouted as I ran towards them.
“Amy!” he stood up and gave me a hug. “That's quite the costume.”
“Victoire's idea,” I blushed.
My Uncle Jack lives in Horseheads, New York, and I only see him once a year at the most. I had no idea he was coming for my birthday. He was wearing a black and white striped prisoner outfit.
“Happy Birthday, Amy,” he said.
“Thanks,” I grinned.
I went around the pub, accepting all the birthday wishes from everyone until I wound up at the bar. Victoire and Teddy were sitting there, each with a drink. I ordered my own drink and sat down next to them.
There was a box at the end of the bar marked 'Lycanthropy Awareness Fund'. I looked at it and then turned to Victoire.
“We told everyone to bring donations in lieu of gifts,” Victoire answered my questioning look.
“Thanks,” I smiled. “So who's Sophie with tonight?”
Sophie, Victoire and Teddy's five-year-old daughter, was the most adorable kid I had ever met in my life. She's like a niece to me and even calls me Aunt.
“My parents,” Victoire answered. “They're thrilled to see her.”
“And how is little Sophie doing?” Hannah Longbottom asked as she set my drink down in front of me.
“Oh, she's great,” Victoire smiled. “I'll bring her by soon.”
“Good. I haven't seen her in ages,” Hannah said.
Ages probably meant a few weeks, I thought. Hannah Longbottom loved Sophie. Everyone loved Sophie.
“Amy, happy birthday.”
I turned and saw Matt, wearing a mummy costume, sitting down on my other side. His blonde hair looked in need of a cut, but other than that he looked great. Just a few months ago I had heard a few of the younger nurses whispering about how good looking he was and I had had to run into a closet to laugh. But now that I looked at him, I could almost see what they meant. In a sisterly, non-disgusting way of course. It was just odd because he will always be a scrawny little kid in my mind. Granted, he was still skinny and on the short side, but that wasn't going to change.
“Thanks, Matt,” I gave him a hug. “I haven't seen you in a few days.”
“I've been with Albus,” Matt pointed to Albus, who was laughing at something their friend John had said. “He's been home the past three days.”
“When's he leaving again?” I asked.
“Who knows?” Matt shrugged.
Albus Potter was the son of the one and only Harry Potter and did some sort of Auror-like secretive work. It involved traveling to different countries and tracking down rogue wizards. That was all I knew. I had asked Matt a few times, but he changed the subject every time. I guessed it must be secret for a reason.
Matt and Albus had been sharing a flat ever since a few months after they left Hogwarts. Even though Albus was away for his job for a good portion of every month, he always paid half the rent. Neither of them, especially Matt, would have been able to afford their own flat.
“So,” Matt grinned, “Late for your own party?”
“I wasn't that late, was I?” I asked. “How long had you lot been here?”
“Few hours,” Matt replied.
“Well, I was at work...brewing,” I shrugged.
“Big surprise there,” Matt grinned.
“Matt!” Albus shouted over the crowd. “Better get over here! Kaden's mixing firewhiskey with some Muggle drink called a screwdriver!”
“I've gotta go,” Matt said as he got up and left.
“Amy,” Rose Weasley ran up to me, “Happy birthday.”
“Thanks,” I smiled.
“But I've been meaning to get ahold of you. I recruited three more werewolves for the study,” Rose told me.
Rose Weasley was, if it was possible, even more devoted to work than I was. She was a recently certified magical psychiatrist who worked at St. Mungo's. A few weeks ago, she had gotten involved with a long-term study on lycanthropy that I was involved in.
“Really?” I asked. “We've never gotten that many at once before.”
“They've been coming to Mungo's for therapy for years,” Rose explained. “I told them about the study and they're quite interested. Two wizards and one witch.”
“Rose Elizabeth Weasley,” Victoire tapped her on the shoulder. “Are you talking about work?”
“Yes,” Rose said.
“We're trying to give Amy a break from work,” Victoire told her. “That means you can't talk about it here.”
“Victoire, it's kind of important,” I said.
“Fine,” Victoire groaned, “Talk about work.”
“Anyway,” Rose continued, “I've scheduled them each to come in for interviews on Monday, if you can make it.”
“I'll be there,” I assured her.
“Good. Now I'd better go stop Kaden before we really do have to work tonight,” Rose said.
I sat with Victoire and Teddy and watched the party. I've never been big on parties, but this one wasn't bad. It was my kind of party. Well, besides the costume part. Only about half of the people were actually dressed up, though.
“Amy, long time, no see,” Landon Comer, one of my friends from school, sat down on the stool next to mine. He was dressed as Harry Potter, which was pretty funny. I'm sure Albus was quite thrilled with it.
“Hey, Landon,” I replied. Landon worked in the Department of International Magical Cooperation. He was married and had two children as well.
“Happy birthday,” he said. “Seems like just yesterday you were that quiet new girl at Hogwarts.”
“You're making me feel old,” I groaned.
“I'm allowed to. I'm older than you,” Landon laughed.
The party continued well into the night. I had a few more drinks and felt more relaxed than I had in a long time. Someone turned on some music and cleared the tables and dancing begun. One of the male nurses dragged me onto the floor to dance but I lost track of him when my parents and Uncle Jack found me to say goodbye.
Soon, it was only me, Victoire, Teddy, Matt, and Albus left. Matt and Albus looked exhausted, which made me wonder how late they had stayed out the night before. Whenever Albus was in town, he and Matt rarely slept.
“Thanks for the party, Victoire,” I gave her a hug.
“No problem,” Victoire replied. “And tomorrow you can get back to work.”
“I've got the weekend off,” I told her.
“Even better,” Victoire grinned. “Well, we'd better get going.”
“Bye,” I said. “Bye, Teddy!”
“See you soon, Amy,” Teddy replied. “Happy birthday.”
I left with Matt and Albus once Victoire and Teddy disapparated. We lived in the same flat building, which was quite close to the Leaky Cauldron.
“Don't stay up too late,” I told Matt once we reached his flat.
“We won't,” Matt rolled his eyes.
“You look exhausted,” I told him.
“'Night, Amy,” Matt said. “Happy birthday.”
“'Night Matt, Albus,” I replied and walked up the two flights of stairs to my own flat.
My flat was quiet like it always is. I had been living in it ever since Victoire got married. The two of us had had a flat together when we were training at St. Mungo's, but it wasn't the nicest of places. By the time Victoire got married, I had been able to afford a better place.
It was on the third floor of a Muggle flat building. The building itself was only ten years old. My flat consisted of two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a relatively large living room. Plus a bathroom and a few closets. It was enough room for me and I liked it.
I tossed my purse onto the kitchen table and went into my bedroom. I changed out of the awful French maid outfit, tossing the thing haphazardly into the closet knowing I would never wear it again. I got into bed and realizing how tired I was, fell into a deep sleep.
******
Someone was knocking on the door and I didn't feel like answering it. I opened my eyes and quickly shut them again when the sunlight hit them. I forced them open again and looked at the clock. It was noon.
I shot out of bed and ran out of the room. I hadn't slept that late in a very long time. Saturdays usually meant doing research, spending time with Matt, and then dinner with my parents. They rarely included sleeping until noon.
I wrenched the door open and was immediately hit by Sophie, who wrapped my legs in a tight hug. I bent down and picked her up and opened the door wider so Victoire and Teddy could get inside.
Sophie Nymphadora Lupin had turned five a month ago and was the most adorable child I'd seen. Everyone knew she would be since she had Victoire and Teddy for parents. Her hair was stick straight and dirty blonde. It was the perfect combination of Victoire's blonde hair and Teddy's naturally brown hair. Today Teddy's hair was green, though. It actually matched Sophie's green eyes quite well.
“Happy Birthday, Aunt Amy!” Sophie shouted.
“Thanks, Sophie,” I smiled as I set her down.
“Where's Uncle Matt?” Sophie asked as she ran around the flat.
“He's at his flat,” I told her. “He's probably still asleep. Remember he likes to sleep late on Saturdays because he has to work during the week.”
“Oh, yeah,” Sophie said. “I made you a birthday card.”
“Did you?” I smiled at her.
“Uh-huh,” Sophie nodded and pulled a construction paper card out of her pocket.
I sat down on couch and Sophie curled up next to me. The card was blue with a yellow sun on the front and 'happy birthday' scribbled above it. I opened it and there was a cake on the inside.
“Thank you, Sophie,” I smiled and gave her a hug. “This is the best card I've gotten.”
Sophie grinned. “I made it at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Grandma helped me with the letters.”
“You did a great job,” I told her.
“Soph, we've got to get to Diagon Alley,” Victoire said and then turned to me. “We just stopped by so she could give you her card.”
“I'll see you soon, ok?” I gave Sophie another hug.
I said goodbye to Victoire and Teddy and shut the door after them. I had four hours until dinner with my parents. Plenty of time to get some work done. I ate a quick lunch and then took a shower and got dressed. Then it was research time.
I tried to do some research every Saturday. The second bedroom in my flat was filled with shelves and shelves of books on potions and lycanthropy. I'd already read a good portion of them, but I liked to look them over again to find clues.
Most recently I had been experimenting with how different types of cauldrons affected the Wolfsbane Potion. It was normally brewed in a silver cauldron, but I had been brewing it in a steel cauldron to see how that would affect it.
There was not a whole lot written about the Wolfsbane Potion. The wizard who had originally invented it had a chapter about it in his book, but that was about it. Then there were a few articles about it in obscure potions magazines, but they weren't that informative. I had to read other books and piece together little bits of information and try to make sense of it.
It wasn't very rewarding work. In fact, it was downright depressing most of the time. I would spend weeks on a new potion and then it wouldn't work and I'd have to research again and start over. That was the nature of potion brewing, though. Not a lot of wizards and witches chose to get into that profession for that reason and even fewer wanted to create another Wolfsbane Potion. There were four of us working on it and I was one of two brewers. My boss, Healer Sterling, was the other one. He had been working on it long before I even became a Healer. The other two are magical psychiatrists, Healer Norlam and Rose Weasley.
Nevertheless, I devoted most of my time towards the task. There was no doubt in my mind that I was the most devoted of us four. I had no intentions of stopping until I succeeded. It was something I had been wanting to do ever since I was fifteen.
The reason was my brother. When he was only five years old, he was attacked by a werewolf and had been suffering from lycanthropy ever since. Wolfsbane Potion had no affect on him. My parents had spent so much time trying to give him a normal life, including moving all of us from Australia to England so he could go to school.
Matt had also participated in a ten year study of the Wolfsbane Potion run by Healer Sterling, in which he tried three new kinds of Wolfsbane. None of them helped. He'd tried most of the potions I created as well, and none of them helped. Some even made it worse.
“Amy, are you working again?” someone said from behind me.
I jumped and saw Matt standing in the doorway of the second bedroom. “Matt. I didn't even hear you come in. And yes, I am working.”
“We've got to get to Mum and Dad's,” he said as he sat down on the bed.
“You still look exhausted,” I told him, “How late did you stay up?”
“Late,” he answered. “John and Kaden came over.”
“You really shouldn't do that to yourself so close to the full moon,” I sighed. “You're going to regret it on Thursday.”
“You sound like Mum,” Matt muttered. “Besides, Albus has to leave again on Monday.”
“Where's he off to this time?” I asked.
“Can't tell you,” Matt gave his standard answer to that question. “But I'll be over on Wednesday, probably.”
“That's fine,” I told him. “I've got the day off.”
Matt always got really sick the day before full moons, and that hadn't changed as he got older. Mum and Dad weren't comfortable with him being on his own the day before and day after the full moon and I agreed with them. Matt hadn't objected, either. So, when he and Albus got their flat together, Matt agreed never to be on his own around full moons. Whenever Albus is away for work, Matt comes over to my flat. I usually get the day before, the day of, and the day after full moons off.
For the actual transformation, Matt goes to our parents' house. There was really no point in making a new safe room or safe house when the one in my parents' house works fine. Plus, we live in a Muggle flat building and it would not be a good idea for him to transform in his flat, safe room or not.
“Day after, too?” Matt asked.
“Yup,” I told him. “Like always.”
“Any new potions this month?” he asked.
“No,” I sighed. “I'm working on one, but it's got to be put through the preliminary tests before anyone can take it.”
“It's ok, you'll get there eventually,” Matt said quietly, “Now we'd better get to Mum and Dad's before they start worrying.”
I smiled and followed my brother out of the room. Even if we were a minute late to family dinners, Mum started worrying. If there was an olympic event in worrying, Mum would get the gold medal.

Kiara Quinn pushed at her hair and pinched her cheeks like she always did before she got on camera. She positioned herself at the shattered brick wall that revealed behind it the latest discovery of what was known in the media as "Hidden Wizard Elements". There were so many things happening right under their noses. Wizards and witches living among them in houses charmed to look like they weren't there. They could walk around un noticed if they wanted to, and the things they could do to harm you were unspeakable. Unspeakable to everyone but Kiara Quinn, who was a reporter for CNN. The latest scoop had landed her a flight to London where a wizarding market place had been found. She was attending to cover the story.
"Okay Jack, now make sure you get that into the screen? Ready, count me in." The camera man help his hand up and counted down on his fingers, 3, 2, 1 and pointed to Kiara.
"Good evening. I am live on location where police have uncovered yet another Hidden Wizard Element. A market place... " Kiara started to walk over the cobblestones, her high heels catching in the ancient looking blocks of stone. She looked down occassionally to watch her step. She came up to a shop and stopped in front of it.
"Here we have been informed is where the wizards and witches buy and sell their potions and equipment that they have been using against human kind. It is said that this very shop is the location of the poison that has caused the British Prime Minister to be, as the delegates of Dumbeldore's army call it, 'confunded'. " Kiara articulated the last word. She crossed the road, Jack following her with expert skill. "The shop owners of this marketplace have been rounded up by police, but some of tried to escape. Using the technology provided by Dumbeldore's army to trace the magical escape technique of 'Disaaparation', the police are tracking several wizards including those responsible for wand making and fortune telling. These are dangerous criminals and should be continued armed and dangerous. " Kiara approached a man on the street. "Sir, how do you feel about this new discover of yet another Hidden Wizard Element?" The man turned and looked at Kiara, and then the camera.
"Overwhelmed, I'm sure!" He exclaimed in a suitable british accent. Kiara winked at Jack off the screen, accenting her approval of their interviewee. "I can't believe this has been here all this time! I go to the pub just over there! And i never would have thought. They have us all under their spells and I bet they've put something in our water too!"
"Do you think so? So perhaps they have been plotting all this time and could even have head quarters elsewhere with more such places of business?" Kiara probed.
The man's eyes widened. "Oh yes! I'm sure they do! Oh! What will we do?!" The man took his hat off and wrung it in his hands. Kiara put her hand on the man's shoulder and he nearly started to cry. "We are all scared for our lives, indeed. So far, authorities all over the world are being given important communications regarding the whereabouts of such places as these. Soon ,they will all be revealed. Each country has a united plan of attack, thanks to the United nations. All wizard and witch activity and foundation must be reported and undone, for the safety of us all. The call to register is occuring in every major city of the globe. And rewards are being offered should you have any information. Please call. This is Kiara Quinn, CNN News, London."

Thanks Fawkes, hprocks, and Obladi!
Here's an early update since I'm going on vacation tomorrow.
Chapter 55: Christmas in Australia
Healer Norlam was still at the house when we returned. Mum told me to go up to my room and stay there until she said I could leave. This didn't surprise me in the slightest.
What did surprise me was the amount of time I had to stay up there. An hour passed and Mum still hadn't told me I could come out. I was beginning to think they just forgot. How long could it possibly take for Mum to talk with Norlam?
I was contemplating using the Extendable Ear and finding out what they were talking about, when Mum knocked on my door. I told her to come in and she walked inside, looking much more worn out than she had earlier.
"Dad and I have decided to see Healer Norlam on a regular basis," Mum said as she sat down on my bed.
I sat down next to her. "What do you mean? Like what Matt did over the summer?"
"Sort of," Mum said, "We have some issues to work through and we think Norlam can help."
"Wait, you're not having marriage issues, are you?" I asked anxiously. I had seen sitcoms on the television at Kenzie's house and married couples who were thinking of divorce went to see psychologists.
"No, nothing like that," she assured me, "Don't worry. Dad and I are perfectly happy together. Mainly, we want to work on our parenting techniques."
"Oh," I breathed a sigh of relief. This was about what they talked about the previous night. But they weren't to know that I knew about that.
"We just wanted you to know," Mum said as she stood up, "And if you could pack for the trip soon, I'd appreciate it."
I nodded as she left. Mum and Dad in therapy. I wasn't sure what I thought about that. What sort of parenting techniques were they going to learn? Were they just going to change the way they parented Matt, or would it affect me too?
The remainder of the day was very quiet. We ate dinner in silence and it was hard to tell whether Matt was still mad at Mum and Dad. Although, I'm not sure mad was the right term. Matt just sort of sat in a stunned silence throughout the meal. He methodically at his food, but never said a word or moved much. In fact, it reminded me of what he was like after Lubar kidnapped him.
I didn't get much sleep that night. I tossed and turned the whole night, no longer that excited about going to Australia. It was almost like Matt's fear was haunting me. I couldn't muster an ounce of excitement after seeing how scared he still was.
The next morning was just a duplicate of the previous night. Silence, fatigue, and going through the motions. I wondered how long it would go on. I had been expecting the Christmas holiday to be exciting and a nice break from school, but so far it hadn't been that.
We got to the airport with plenty of time to spare before our flight left. Going through security had become so much of a habit that it no longer fazed me. It just took a very long time. Mum and Dad whispered to each other the whole time and Matt clung to Mum like she was going to side-along Apparate with him at any moment.
It was almost a relief to get on the plane. Matt refused to sit anywhere besides next to Mum, so I sat with Dad behind them. He let me have the aisle seat.
"Are Richard and Cinda picking us up?" Dad leaned forward and asked Mum.
"Yes," Mum said.
That was the only amount of discussion between them throughout the entire flight. It didn't seem like they were mad at each other, more like they were worried. I couldn't really blame them. Matt had yet to say anything the entire day.
I slept most of the flight. Luckily it was a very smooth trip without much turbulence. We arrived in Australia only a half hour later than scheduled.
It was very strange to be back in Australia. I got this weird feeling in my stomach as soon as we left the plane that had nothing to do with the flight. Nearly six months had passed since I was last in Australia. I swallowed hard as we went through security. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. I wasn't going to want to leave.
"Julie!" Cinda, dressed in a sky blue pants suit, ran as fast as her spiky heels could carry her towards us, "You're here!"
"We're here," Mum smiled wearily. Cinda threw her arms around her in a very un-Cinda like manner. This looked kind of awkward since Mum was carrying Matt.
"Walter," Richard stuck out his hand.
"Richard," Dad shook it.
"Good flight?"
"It was all right," Dad replied.
"Amy!" Cinda let go of Mum and flung her arms around me, "How is your new school? How are the kids there?"
"School's all right," I shrugged.
The one good thing about Cinda's personality was that short, ambiguous answers satisfied her. She asked nothing else about school and began to fill Mum in on all the gossip as we walked to the car. It was like nothing had changed since we moved. If I tried really hard, I could pretend we hadn't even moved in the first place and were just returning from a long holiday.
"I just couldn't believe it!" Cinda exclaimed as we drove back to their house, "Pregnant! At her age!"
"How are Breanne and Carmine taking it?" Mum asked.
Cinda had just explained that Breanne's mum was pregnant. I was surprised, but didn't really care. Breanne's mum wasn't that nice of a person.
"They don't care," Cinda replied, "Apparently when she told them about it, Breanne just asked if the new baby would get her own nanny or if Carmine's nanny would take care of the baby."
Classic Breanne, I thought. I just hoped I wouldn't have to see her while I was in Australia.
The gossip continued until we reached the house. It may have went on longer than that, but I escaped to my pink bedroom.
It looked exactly the same as it had before I left. I doubted Richard and Cinda had even gone in it. I was sure they would leave it that way forever, since they had so many other rooms. Matt's room probably looked the same, too, although I had my doubts as to whether he would use it while we were there.
Cinda informed me that Kenzie was spending Christmas at her grandparents' house and wouldn't be back until after. I didn't dare bring up the possibility of visiting Olivia. Maybe over the summer, if my parents had worked through their parenting issues by then.
The Christmas holiday at Richard and Cinda's wasn't much different than it had been at home. The only difference was that Cinda filled in the silence with gossip and the occasional question about England.
Matt hardly ever left Mum's side. It seemed that being in Australia wasn't doing anything to ebb his fears. I would have thought that after two days of being there would give him a bit of reassurance that nothing was going to happen, but it didn't.
Christmas Eve came and I realized that we hadn't even gotten a Christmas tree. Everyone seemed to have forgotten about it.
"Where are we getting the tree from?" I asked at lunch.
"Er, I'm not sure," Dad glanced at Richard.
"There's a tree farm a few miles away," Richard told him, "We always used to get trees there when Julie was little."
"A tree farm?" I sighed. That wasn't nearly as fun as going into the bush and cutting one down yourself.
"They have cut your own trees," Richard said, "It's like a bush, only the trees are all in rows and were planted by people."
"All right," I said resignedly. It was better than nothing.
"We'll go as soon as we're done eating. It'll be fun," Richard said.
"I don't want to go," Matt mumbled. He had been picking at his food and not really eating. It was strange since he could usually eat a hippogriff when it wasn't around the full moon.
"You'll be safe," Mum assured him, "It's a Muggle place. Nobody will know you."
"No, I don't feel good," he said.
Mum immediately put her hand on his forehead. "You don't feel warm."
"He's probably just overly tired," Dad said quietly, "I don't think he's slept more than ten hours since we got here."
"You're right," Mum sighed.
"Can't you just give him that potion that makes you fall asleep?" Cinda asked.
"Couldn't bring it on the plane," Mum explained, "Couldn't transfigure it into something normal either. Transfiguration of potions changes their effectiveness."
"We're going to have to go buy some," Dad said.
"No place is open on Christmas Eve," Mum pointed out, "You guys just go get the tree. I'll stay here with him."
A little while later, Richard, Dad, and I were riding in Richard's huge SUV to go get the tree. Cinda had decided to stay home in order to spend 'quality time with her daughter and grandson', but everyone knew she just didn't want to go to the tree farm. She had never liked getting Christmas trees.
The tree farm was really crowded. Richard had to circle the parking lot twice just to find a spot. Then we walked up a small dirt road until we reached the farthest spot of the farm, which was relatively empty.
"A year ago we were doing this in the bush behind your old house," Richard said as we began looking at trees, "Things sure do change."
"That they do," Dad mused, "But change is good."
"Is Matt ok?" Richard asked, "He hasn't seemed well over the past few days. Has something happened?"
"He's afraid to be here," Dad sighed, "Because of what happened before we moved. The psychologist we've been seeing thought it would be a good idea for him to confront the fear, but so far all its done is made him sleep deprived."
"I'm surprised Julie allowed that."
"She's the one who originally suggested it," Dad told him, "But the psychologist agreed and here we are."
"That's possibly the most surprising thing I've heard since you told me you were moving. Julie has babied that boy ever since he was born."
"We both have," Dad said a bit louder, "It's part of the problem and it's taken us nearly nine years to realize it. We're not doing it anymore. We've stopped giving in to everything. We've spoiled him."
"I've been telling you that since he was three," Richard chuckled, "I tell you, the best thing for a boy is to fall down and get a few bumps and bruises. Then he picks himself up and gets on with life."
"Believe me, he's had more bumps and bruises than the average kid. And half the time he can't just pick himself up and get on with life. I guess that's the issue. Julie and I have to learn when he really needs us and when he doesn't."
"You'll figure it out. And you know how I know that?" Richard put his arm around me and smiled, "Because you did something right with this one."
I couldn't help but grin. Richard was usually very quiet. He rarely said more than a sentence or two within a fifteen minute time frame. People said he had to be like that in order to be married to Cinda, the queen of talking. Richard never commented on how my parents raised me. He said plenty about how they raised Matt, but never me. I guess that was a good thing.
Mum always said I took after Cinda, but I liked Richard more. Cinda's constant jabbering was irritating and she always tried to get what she wanted. Whenever I complained to Mum about her, she just smiled and laughed and said I didn't like Cinda because I was so much like her.
"You'd think we would have gotten better with the second one, not worse," Dad muttered.
"Don't think too much about it now. It's Christmas," Richard said, "And we've got a tree to find."
We wound up finding a tree that was about half the size of one we had last year. Richard refused to get a twelve-foot tree since he was sure Cinda would have a hippogriff if he did so. Well, he used the term, 'have a cow'. It was funny to watch Dad help him tie it to the roof of the car, though. Dad had obviously never done such a thing before and he muttered something about how much easier it would be to just use a sticking charm.
Getting the tree off the car once we drove back to Richard and Cinda's house was much easier. Dad just used magic since no one else was around. He levitated it through the double doors in the back of the house and stood it up in the corner of the living room.
Cinda and Mum were talking on the couch in the living room. Well, Cinda was talking and Mum was nodding and muttering 'mm-hmm' every so often. I doubted she was really listening. One of her hands was holding an open book and the other was rubbing Matt's back, who was lying next to her.
"Have fun?" Mum set down her book.
Dad nodded. "When should we decorate?"
Decorate. I suddenly realized that we left all our decorations at home. "Er, we don't have any decorations."
Richard laughed. "Yes we do. Haven't used them in years, but we've got them. Your mum made some of them."
"Oh, right," I said. Of course they had decorations.
"Let's do it after dinner," Cinda said as she stood up, "There's a lovely lasagna in the oven."
"Had it delivered while we were gone?" Richard smirked.
"Yes," Cinda grinned.
******
"What is this supposed to be?" I asked as I pulled a misshapen piece of wood with a string attached out of the box of ornaments.
"It's a dog," Mum laughed, "I made it when I was five."
I turned the dog around in my hand and squinted. "Erm, I sort of see it."
It was actually really fun to use Richard and Cinda's ornaments. There was a story behind every single one. The crystal husband and wife one that they had gotten at their wedding, the little set of golf clubs Richard had had since he was a teenager, the witch's hat and broom Mum had gotten after she found out she was a witch, and of course all the homemade ornaments.
Even Matt seemed to perk up as we looked through the ornaments. He loved Mum's homemade ornaments. It even seemed like he wasn't sleep deprived.
Mum, Dad, Richard, and Cinda sat on the couch and let us decorate the tree. They told stories about the ornaments, but the decorating was up to us. Matt decorated the bottom half and I decorated the top. I had to use a ladder for the very top and Mum forbade Matt from getting on it.
Eventually we got the tree completely decorated. My parents and grandparents loved it and Richard took a bunch of pictures. Even though the tree had no theme whatsoever, I liked it. It was different, but nothing about this holiday was normal, so it fit well.
I fell asleep quickly that night since I had gotten used to Australian time. I had also gotten used to my pink bedroom again. In fact, I slept late and didn't wake up until nearly ten o'clock. It marked the second year in a row that Matt hadn't woken me up on Christmas.
The sun was shining into my window, but I didn't pay much attention to it. It was almost ten and nobody else seemed to be up. I ran out of my room and down the corridor to my parents'.
They were sitting up in bed whispering to each other, but stopped as soon as I walked in.
"Happy Christmas," Mum smiled.
"Happy Christmas," I said as I sat down on the bed, "Is anyone else up?"
"I don't think so," Dad replied, "We're going to wait for presents until Matt's up. He's been sound asleep since three in the morning."
I looked down and saw that Matt was sound asleep in the middle of the bed. I sighed. It would be a while until he got up. He'd probably sleep until dinner time. At least he finally fell asleep, though.
It was strange not to open presents right away. I went downstairs and saw that Ellie must have Apparated to the house at some point because she was making brekkie in Richard and Cinda's kitchen.
Richard and Cinda woke up a little while later and we all ate brekkie while Matt slept. No one really knew what to do after that since Christmas morning was usually spent opening and admiring gifts.
I sat in the living room staring at the presents while Richard read the paper and Mum and Cinda talked. There was one huge present that was addressed to me and I really wanted to open it.
After a few more hours of boredom, Matt finally walked sleepily into the room. He looked like he could use another day's worth of sleep, but I was glad he got up.
"Can we open presents now?" I asked as he climbed onto Mum's lap.
"Yes," Mum grinned, "You can go first."
I leaped off the chair and grabbed the big present I had been gazing at. It was from Mum and Dad and weighed a ton. Did they get me a box of bricks or something?
I ripped the paper off and tore open the plain brown box that was underneath. There was a bunch of crumpled up newspaper in the box and I threw it all over the room as I dug around in the box.
When all the newspaper was finally on the floor and not in the box, I pulled out a silver cauldron that was slightly bigger than the one I already had.
"You've already got one of those," Matt announced.
"This one's self-stirring," I grinned as I noticed the self-stirring symbol etched onto the side. I set it down and ran over to Mum and Dad, giving them each a huge hug. "Thank you so much!"
Self-stirring cauldrons open up a wealth of brewing opportunities. Some potions require constant stirring, which makes it difficult to prepare ingredients as you brew. Some ingredients had to be prepared right before you added them. So you either needed another person or a self-stirring cauldron.
I was surprised they got me another silver cauldron. They had been reluctant enough to get me the first one. It was a good sign; they were trusting me more.
Matt went next and he picked the present from me. His eyes got huge when he saw the box of chocolate frogs and Mum laughed. Then he held up the Chudley Cannons jersey and Cinda's eyes got huge with disgust. I giggled. She probably wouldn't have let me bring that into the house if she had known about it. She claims orange looks good on nobody.
"What is that?" she asked.
"A Quidditch jersey!" Matt said excitedly, "Chudley Cannons? Who are they?"
"A team in the British league," I explained, "The store in Hogsmeade didn't have any Australian jerseys, so I picked another team. Apparently they're not very good, but they need support."
"I like it," Matt said as he pulled it on. It went reached halfway down his thighs and was wide enough to fit three of him into it, but he had a big grin on his face.
The present opening continued for the rest of the afternoon. Mum and Dad both loved what I got them. I think Dad wished I had gotten him a Gryffindor scarf as well, though. Hell, Matt seemed to want one, too. I could get him one for his birthday.
Cinda got me a bag, which I thought was kind of funny since Mum got her one, too. This one was tiny and pink with silver dangly things attached to the zipper. It was something I would never use. I had no use for girly bags. Pockets worked just as well for holding stuff and I carried my school bag around Hogwarts. Not even one book would fit in this pink bag.
Cinda liked her bag much more than I liked mine. She said she had about ten different outfits to go with it and I was sure all of them were pants suits. Richard was thrilled with his golf club and said he'd have to go golfing soon.
Mum and Ellie prepared dinner afterwards. Cinda sat in the kitchen with them, but didn't help with the cooking. It was just as well since the only thing she could do was heat stuff up in the microwave.
Dad and Richard talked quietly in the den and I wanted to listen in on what they were saying, but Matt kept me occupied playing with his new Quidditch game with him in the living room. It was a model game that you could tell the players where to fly to, sort of like Wizard's Chess.
Matt seemed completely different than he had been the previous day. I mentioned this to Mum and she told me that a good night's sleep could do wonders. Maybe the sleep helped him realize that nothing would happen to him in Australia anymore.
Dinner was delicious and fun. Mum and Dad seemed so much happier now that Matt wasn't as scared. I think we were all relieved about that. Nobody said a word about anything related to Lubar or the Australian Ministry or wizarding Australia in general.
Ellie Apparated back to England after we finished dessert. She had to take my cauldron back to our house, since there would be no explaining that to airport security. Come to think of it, she had probably brought it that morning. Mum also wanted it in my potions room as soon as possible. She may be trusting me more, but she was still worried about Matt being around it.
I was really glad we had gone to Australia for Christmas. It had been a really good day. I don't think it would have been all that enjoyable if Matt hadn't gotten any sleep, but he did so it turned out well. Having Christmas in England would have just been too strange. I hoped we'd go to Australia for every Christmas.

Yay, you read it! I'm glad you liked it.
The transformation part was the bit I was worried about, but so far everyone seems to like it on HPFF.
Chapter 3: It's Not Something That She's Made Up In Her Head
And she knows that this is real
It's not something that she's made up in her head
And there's something that she feels but she hasn't found the words
~It's Love, Jared Campbell
Eleven-year-old Amanda Genevieve Tagger smiled to herself as she closed her book. She rolled over on her bed and set the it on her bedside table. Her bedside table was stacked high with at least ten books, most of which Amanda had already read.
Amanda had always enjoyed reading. Ever since she was a little girl, books had been some of her best friends. They were great company when she was sad or bored or just wanted to escape into a different world for a while. Best of all, books never made fun of her.
Amanda had always been shy and she was the first to admit it. She didn't have very many friends and kids her age tended to stay away from her. This was most likely because strange things always happened around her.
She was only five when she first realized that she was different. Amanda, her older sister, Jen, who was nine at the time, and a few of her sister's friends were playing outside. They decided to play hide-and-seek and Amanda climbed the biggest tree in their backyard and hid amongst the branches. Jen, who was 'it', had the hardest time finding her. In fact, Jen never found her. Amanda didn't leave the tree until their mom called them in for a snack.
That was when it happened. Amanda's foot caught on one of the branches and she lost her grip. She fell what must have been twenty or thirty feet out of that maple tree, hitting numerous branches on her way down.
When she was a mere five feet from the ground, she suddenly stopped falling. Then, she glided lightly to the ground, and landed softly on her feet. Amanda looked around and saw Jen staring open-mouthed at her. Their mother, who had seen Amanda falling, ran from the house and checked her over. She was completely fine, save for a few minor scratches and bruises. No one knew why it had happened, but Amanda's mother said an angel must have been looking out for her that day.
Whatever it was, Amanda knew she was different that day. It was only the beginning. Strange things had happened to her ever since. When she was six and the class bully stole her biscuits at lunch, new ones appeared out of thin air in front of her. When she was seven and forgot to do her maths homework, it somehow did itself while sitting in her backpack.
A small, relatively harmless tornado had somehow descended upon a few boys who were chasing her when she was eight. That incident was what caused most of the other kids her age to steer clear of her.
There was one girl who did not care that strange things happened around Amanda. Jamie House, Amanda's best friend since Kindergarten, never cared about the strange incidents. She actually thought they were funny. Amanda and Jamie were inseparable at school.
However, Jamie was currently spending a few weeks with her grandparents in Scotland. Without Jamie's company, Amanda had spent most of her time reading. There wasn't really anything else to do. Jen was fifteen and the last thing she wanted to do was hang out with her eleven-year-old sister. Amanda's little brother, Max, was eight and all he wanted to do was ride his bike in the empty lot down the road with the other neighborhood boys.
Amanda was left with her books for company, not that she really minded. She was getting a bit restless, though. She stood up opened her bedroom door. Maybe Jen wasn't on the computer and Amanda would be able to go online. Jamie managed to get on instant messager ever so often at her grandparents' house and Amanda had talked to her a few times over the past week.
The doorbell rang just as Amanda was leaving her room.
"Amanda!" Jen shouted from her room, "Could you get that?"
"Sure," Amanda said as she passed Jen's room. She peeked inside and saw that Jen was in the process of straightening her light brown hair. Jen had straightened Amanda's honey blonde hair a few times, but Amanda actually preferred it with its natural slight wave. Jen hated her own curly hair, though.
Amanda ran down the stairs and towards the door. She pulled it open and saw a man wearing the strangest outfit she had ever seen anyone wear on a day that was not Halloween. It looked like a black graduation gown. The man himself looked relatively sane, though. His blonde hair was neatly combed and he smiled when Amanda opened the door.
"Hello," he greeted her, "Are your parents home?"
"Er," Amanda began, "I think so. Are you selling something?" Her parents hated door to door salesmen. Amanda wasn't exactly sure where her parents were, but she doubted they'd want to be interrupted to listen to someone trying to sell something.
The man laughed. "No, not at all."
"Wait right here," Amanda said and went to find her parents, "Mum! Dad! There's some bloke at the door who wants to talk to you!"
"What's he selling?" Mrs. Tagger shouted from the kitchen.
"Nothing!" Amanda replied.
Mrs. Tagger, a short, plump woman with flecks of grey in her dark brown hair walked out of the kitchen and followed Amanda to the door.
"Can I help you?" she asked the man.
"Yes," the man replied, "I'm a teacher at a private school and I'm here to inform you that your daughter has been accepted."
"Jen?" Mrs. Tagger asked, "I wasn't aware she applied to any private schools."
"No," the man shook his head, "Not Jen. Amanda."
Amanda gaped at the man and then turned to her mother, who was now frowning. Amanda hadn't applied to any private schools. Why would she? She had already gotten into the secondary school she was attending in the fall.
"I know Amanda hasn't applied to anymore schools," Mrs. Tagger said.
"This isn't one she applied for," the man said quietly, "Her name has been down since she was born."
Amanda was stunned. What was this about? How could her name have been down for a school since she was born?
"Could I come in?" the man asked.
"I think you'd better," Mrs. Tagger said in barely more than a whisper.
The man stepped inside the house and followed Mrs. Tagger into the den. Amanda followed and sat down on a chair while the strange man took the couch.
"Henry!" Mrs. Tagger shouted down the basement stairs, "You'd better come upstairs!"
A minute later a tall man with a messy shock of blonde hair on his head walked into the room with Mrs. Tagger.
"My husband, Henry," Mrs. Tagger replied, "And my name is Sarah. Who are you?"
"Professor Neville Longbottom," the man replied as he stood up and shook each of my parents' hands.
"Professor?" Henry raised his eyebrows.
"He told me Amanda has been accepted to a private school. One that her name's been down for since birth," Sarah explained, "Did you sign her up without telling me?"
"No," Henry shook his head.
"I'll explain everything if you'll just sit down," Neville said.
Henry and Sarah nodded and they sat down on the couch Neville had just vacated.
"I teach at a boarding school in Scotland called Hogwarts-"
Henry snorted and Sarah glared at him. "Sorry," he muttered.
Neville grinned. "I get that reaction a lot. Anyway, Hogwarts is not an ordinary school. It is a school of magic. Mr. and Mrs. Tagger, your daughter is a witch."
Amanda was glad she had been sitting down. If she hadn't, she surely would have fainted. She stared in shock at Neville. What did he mean, witch? Amanda had read many stories about witches. Some had good witches and others had bad witches. Which witch was she?
How could she even be a witch? Witches weren't real. They were made up to provide entertainment. They couldn't actually exist. Magic didn't exist.
"What are you getting at?" Henry said defensively, "If this is some sort of prank, it's not funny."
"It's not a prank," Neville said calmly, "Magic does exist. Witches and wizards have been hiding their world for generations. I teach at Britain's only school of magic."
"What do you teach?" Henry asked.
"Herbology. The study of magical plants."
"Prove it," Henry said, "Pull a rabbit out of your hat or something."
Neville grinned and pulled out his wand. Amanda stared at it. A real magic wand. Just like the ones she'd read about in books.
"Accio pillow," Neville pointed his wand at one of the pillows next to Henry. It soared through the air and landed neatly in Neville's hand.
"Where's the string?" Henry stood up and grabbed the pillow. He searched all over it for a string, but didn't find one.
"No string," Neville smiled. He took the pillow back and pointed his wand at it. He muttered something else and the pillow turned into a tea kettle.
"That is brilliant," Amanda grinned, "Can I learn how to do that?"
"When you are older, yes," Neville replied.
"What else can you do?" Amanda asked excitedly.
"Brew potions, various charms, disappear and reappear in a new place-"
"Seriously?" Amanda gaped, "Can you show me that?"
"Sure," Neville replied. He disappeared from the room with a loud crack and then was back a few seconds later.
"What the bloody hell was that?" Jen ran into the room with her hair partially straight and partially curly.
"Language, Jennifer," Sarah warned.
"I'm a witch," Amanda grinned, "I can do magic."
"What?!" Jen shouted and sat down on the nearest chair, clearly intent on staying in the room despite her hair.
"Wait, wait!" Henry shouted, "What if we choose not to let her attend this place?"
"You have to, Dad!" Amanda shouted.
"Henry, are you really so gullible? You can't honestly think there is a school of magic!" Sarah shouted.
"Magic?" Jen asked, "Like pulling rabbits out of hats?"
"Of course it exists, Mum!" Amanda told her.
Sarah shook her head. "No. Amanda, you just want it to exist. Magic isn't real. It's fantasy."
"It does," Neville said quietly, "Can you remember a time Amanda has done something that couldn't be explained? Any time where she should have been hurt and then somehow wasn't?"
Sarah's face went pale white and she turned to Henry. "Yes," she whispered, "Many times."
"It can be explained," Neville replied, "It's magic."
"But what if we don't let her go?" Henry asked again.
"That's fine. But she won't ever learn to control her magic and she will continue to cause strange things to happen."
"I'm going," Amanda crossed her arms on her chest.
"Glad to hear it," Neville reached into his, what could only be described as a cloak, and pulled out a letter. He handed it to Amanda.
It was addressed to her. She turned it over and carefully opened it. She unfolded it and began to read it aloud.

Dear Miss Tagger,
We are pleased to inform you that you
have been accepted to Hogwarts School
of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Enclosed
is a list of books and materials you will
need to purchase.
Please note that first years are not allowed
to bring their own broomsticks.
Please reply to this letter as soon as possible
to let us know if you are attending. The
Hogwarts Express will leave at exactly
11 in the morning on September first
from King's Cross Station, Platform 9 3/4.
Sincerely,
Padma Patil
Deputy Headmistress
There was another piece of paper that had a list of supplies written on it, including a cauldron, wand, and spell books. Amanda had about a million questions. Where could she buy a real wand? Had they gotten the platform wrong? There couldn't be a Platform 9 3/4, could there? What did the letter mean, broomsticks? Did witches really ride around on brooms like they do in books?
"I'm home!" the front door slammed shut and Max ran into the room, his dark hair disheveled and his face coated in dirt. He stopped at the sight of Neville and grinned. "Nice costume, but Halloween's not for a few months."
"It's not a costume," Jen said, "He's a wizard. He teaches at a school of magic and he's here to tell us that Amanda is a witch."
"That is brilliant," Max grinned, "Am I one, too?"
"You'll find out the summer you are eleven," Neville answered.
"Max, please go upstairs and clean yourself up," Sarah groaned, "You're getting mud all over the carpet."
"Oh, sorry," Max turned and ran up the stairs.
"Mum, Dad," Amanda began, "You've got to let me go to Hogwarts. This explains everything! I want to learn how to control my magic. I won't be the weird girl at Hogwarts."
Henry and Sarah shared a look. "I suppose you're right," Henry sighed, "We'll let you go, so long as this professor explains everything about magic to us."
"I will," Neville nodded, "Actually, if you're not busy today, I could take you to Diagon Alley. That's the shopping area where you will be able to purchase everything Amanda needs for Hogwarts. It's in London."
"We're not busy," Henry said, "We'll just wait for Max."
Amanda grinned as she reread her letter over and over again. She still couldn't believe it. A witch. She was a real witch! Amanda always knew she was different, but she never imagined it would be like this. She pinched herself to make sure it was real. It was. She, Amanda Tagger, was a witch. It was like she had fallen into one of her books.

While you make a good point about ratios you have to remember that when they sort it isn't a random selecting, so a persons chances of getting into a house may be diffent. Ex. Malfoy definatly wouldn't make it in to gryfindor based on his person. And while the hat had trouble with harry it never considered Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw so his chances were 50:50. See what I mean. Although I think the idea that the houses being uneven is on the right track. Just not a such a grand scale.

It's almost Christmas time in this fic! I know Fawkes told me she was looking forward to the Christmas chapters. Well, the one after this begins the Christmas chapters!
I have come up with a plot for the sequel to this and can't wait to get started. I'll be tying in elements and characters from In Moonlight's Shadow as well, so if you haven't started reading that, I'd suggest it!
Questions, comments, and general reviews are always welcome!
Chapter 20: The Missing Map
Saturday was soon upon them and with it came a howling snow storm. Albus was very happy that there was a dueling tournament and not a Quidditch match. He had played Quidditch in snow before, but never in conditions that prevented him from seeing his own hands in front of him. Today's storm was so bad that Kendrick forbade anyone from going outside, but he needn't have bothered since no one wanted to go outside in the first place.
After lunch, half the school migrated into the dueling room and waited for the tournament to begin. Albus and Amanda said goodbye to their friends and sat down at the table they had been at the previous tournament.
"Hi Albus, hi Amanda!" Kate greeted them energetically.
"Hi Kate!" Albus grinned. He sat down at the only remaining seat, which happened to be next to Malfoy. Amanda had managed to snag a seat next to Kate. "Malfoy," Albus said politely.
"Potter," Malfoy muttered.
The tournament commenced much as it had the previous time, only this time everyone knew what they were doing and it went smoother. There was still a lot of sitting around time and Albus was very happy that Amanda was on his team so he had someone to talk to. So far, there were still tensions between the Slytherins and everybody else. Kendrick's plan to have everyone get along was not working.
After about a half hour, it was finally Albus's turn to duel. Malfoy had just completed his first duel and beat his Ravenclaw opponent. Albus congratulated him as he went up to the dueling area. He was up against a Hufflepuff third year. Albus and the other boy bowed and the two of them started dueling. The Hufflepuff sent two jinxes at Albus, but Albus blocked them both. Albus hit the boy with a trip jinx and then disarmed him. The whole thing took about a minute.
"Point to Potter!" Neville announced.
"Good job, Albus!" Kate and Amanda said in unison once Albus returned to his seat.
"Thanks."
"Hardly counts," Malfoy commented, "You dueled a bloody Hufflepuff. A first year could've beat that one."
"Shut up, Malfoy. You'll duel a Hufflepuff eventually and I doubt you'll say the same thing."
"Your short friend is up," Malfoy pointed to the dueling area that Harry was presiding over.
Albus looked up and saw that Matt was about to duel one of the other Hufflepuffs.
"I'll bet that Hufflepuff beats him," Malfoy laughed, "He doesn't look that good."
Albus personally thought Matt looked all right, considering he had just gotten out of the Hospital Wing the day before.
"Where's he been anyway?"
"He was sick."
"Oh, right," Malfoy grinned, "With that disease he's got. The one your stupid cousin told me about. If there's anyone who should've been a Hufflepuff, it's that cousin of yours."
"Don't call him stupid. And the Hat knows better than you do about where to put him," Albus snapped. He didn't tell Malfoy that he had thought Kaden would have been a Hufflepuff.
"Whatever you say. I wonder if your cousin's got anymore information that I'd like to know."
"Don't go near my cousin," Albus growled.
"Cut it out, you two!" Kate interrupted. "In case you haven't realized by now, you're on the same team."
Albus glared at Malfoy and then turned to watch the rest of Matt's duel. It took him a while, but Matt did eventually beat the Hufflepuff. He looked worn out, but happy. "Told you he could beat him," Albus muttered.
"Lucky shot," Malfoy whispered back.
Albus and Malfoy didn't talk to each other for the rest of the tournament. Both boys won their next duels, Malfoy against a Slytherin and Albus against a Ravenclaw. Amanda lost her first duel and won her second. John won his first and lost his second. Matt lost his second one and Rose managed to win both of hers. But despite their best efforts, none of their teams won the tournament. It didn't really matter though because the points were so close. The final tournament was still very up in the air and any of the teams had a chance of making it.

The remaining days until the end of term went by very fast for Albus. Albus was especially excited about the Christmas holiday this year because it meant that Albus and his friends would acquire two more of the paw prints needed for the map. Rose had just perfected the transference charm and had already started searching for the charm to keep Kaden quiet. After Christmas, the only thing left to do would be to get the rat print. Albus thought it was quite funny that the smallest and theoretically easiest print to get was taking the longest. John had yet to manage to catch a rat during potions class and was getting frustrated about it.
"Every time I see a rat, one of the bloody Slytherins is looking!" John vented the evening before their last day of classes. The group of Gryffindors were in the Room of Requirement, enjoying some peace and quiet while Kaden was being tutored by one of the Ravenclaws.
"Try luring one over to your desk with cheese or something," Amanda suggested, "Then just stun it below the desk."
"Hadn't thought of that," John muttered, "I'd been trying to stun them across the room."
"I wonder why anyone would notice that?" Rose said sarcastically.
"Shut it, Rose."
"Well, you've got plenty of time to get it," Albus reminded him, "We still haven't got the dog or the stag prints."
"We'll get them soon," Rose replied, "Amanda will get the dog and we'll get the stag, Albus. You can come over to my house after we leave the Burrow."
"Sounds good," Albus agreed, "I'm not staying at the Burrow the whole holiday anyway."
"Oh, yeah," Rose smirked, "Gran and Granddad are going on holiday together, alone."
"That's not something I really care to think about, Rose," Albus groaned. His grandparents had decided to go to Scotland together a few days after Christmas and spend new year's alone. "Moving on. What are you lot doing for the holiday?"
"The usual," John said immediately, "All my cousins coming over at various times. Should be crazy as always."
"I've really got to go to your house sometime," Albus grinned, "You always say your cousins are mad, but I really don't think your family is as insane as mine is."
"I'm sure it is. My great-great grandpa is coming this year. He's hilarious, especially after he's had a couple firewhiskeys."
"Your great-great grandpa drinks firewhiskey?" Matt laughed, "That's something I've got to see."
"He sure does. Then he starts telling ridiculous stories about 'back in my day'."
"Sounds like we should hook him up with Auntie Muriel, eh Rose?" Albus winked at his cousin.
"That would be the funniest thing ever," Rose grinned.
"Your great-great grandpa sounds like our Auntie Muriel. She's 127 and loves to gossip," Albus explained.
"I wish I had mad relatives," Amanda commented, "My family sounds pretty normal compared to yours."
"But you celebrate Hannukah, so that makes up for it," John replied, "I mean, who wouldn't like eight days of presents? I wish I celebrated both, that would be the best thing ever."
"Amy has a Muggle friend who celebrates both. But she doesn't get presents on every night of Hannukah," Matt told them.
"I get small presents each night and then one big one on the last night," Amanda explained.
"That's still cool," John said, "So, Matt, do you have to go visit your grandparents this year?"
"Ugh, don't remind me," Matt groaned, "Of course I do. But only for five days this year. We're leaving right before new year's. Amy has to be back at St. Mungo's a few days before term starts."
"That's good," Albus smiled. "At least you don't have to be there as long."
"It'll still be boring. The only thing to do down there is homework or read. It's not like I can play Quidditch or anything."
"What day are you coming back? Maybe you can come over to Rose's house with me. Then we can play Quidditch," Albus offered.
"The 28th. I'll ask my parents."
"Great. You should come too, John and Amanda," Albus suggested.
"I'll ask, I'm sure my parents will let me," John replied.
"I can probably only stay a day or so," Amanda told them, "Hannukah is late this year and starts on Christmas, so it'll still be going on on the 28th. I'll have to be home by the evening."
"That'll work. Maybe we can all get the stag print together," Albus said.
"Good idea," John grinned and everyone else nodded.
"I should probably tell you now, just in case I don't get to go to Rose's house," Matt began quietly, "I'm not coming back to Hogwarts on the train with everyone else."
Albus stared at his friend, who was looking a little forlorn. "Why not? Everything ok?"
"I guess. It's just that I'm starting that new potion I told you about at the beginning of the term. The full moon's on the 9th and someone has to observe me once I start taking it a few days before. Then I've got to go to St. Mungo's the morning after and stay a couple days."
"Oh," Albus wasn't really sure what to say. He wished more than ever that someone would just discover a potion that would work for him.
"Look on the bright side," John said, "At least you don't have to transform at your grandparents house again."
"And if I have my way I'll never have to do that again," Matt shook his head, "But let's talk about something else. Did you see in the Prophet that the Cannons almost won that game against the Fitchburg Finches? You know, that American team they were playing for practice."
"Didn't the Finches beat them by 50 points?" Albus asked.
"Yeah, but that's close!" Matt grinned, "They're making a comeback, I just know it!"
"Well, with a name like 'Finches', what do you expect? It wouldn't have surprised me if the Cannons beat them," John laughed, "Well, maybe a little. But seriously, who names a team the 'Finches'?"

The term ended the next day with a bang, literally. James and a few of his friends thought it would be funny to put a few Weasley fireworks into the suits of armor and charm them to go off at certain times during the day. After the tenth explosion the teachers gave up trying to teach anything and just let their students do what they wanted during class, within reason of course. Unfortunately for James and his friends, Professor Cedonia spotted them refilling the armor on the second floor corridor with fresh fireworks and gave them one of her rare detentions. For this one, they had to clean every single suit of armor on the second floor corridor that evening. James said it was worth it, though.
"We really ought to come up with a few good pranks," John decided as they were traveling through the hills on the train. "That's what the Marauders did, was prank people, so we should, too."
Albus shrugged. He really wasn't very good at coming up with pranks. That was James's area of expertise. Plus, if the result of such pranks was cleaning suits of armor, Albus really didn't want to pull a whole lot of pranks. "Maybe a few minor ones, that don't get us in huge trouble."
"I'm sure we could do some of those. There's loads of stuff we could do to the Slytherins."
"Yeah, like that one James did before the first dueling tournament," Matt laughed.
The rest of the train ride went quickly and soon Albus and his friends found themselves at King's Cross. Albus climbed off the train and saw his parents standing with Rose's parents and Lily and Hugo.
But before Albus could go over to see them, John grabbed his arm and steered him in another direction. "C'mon, you can meet my great-great grandpa!"
Albus saw a very frail, completely bald, old man with a long white beard standing next to John's parents. John lead their group over to the three adults.
"Johnny-Boy!" the old man shouted and gave John a tight hug, "How're things at that school? How is Professor Dippet?"
"He died years ago, Grandpa, like I told you over the summer. Like I tell you every summer," John stifled a laugh.
"Oh, right! Probably all new teachers, a bunch of young'ins I bet! Back in my day none of the teachers were under 50, and now some of em are 30! What has gotten into these new headmasters...."
"Grandpa," John shook his head, "The teachers are fine. But I want you to meet my friends. This is Matt Eckerton, Albus Potter-"
"Potter!?" John's great-great grandpa peered into Albus's eyes and grinned, "Albus Potter? Well I'll be. If it isn't Harry Potter's son! I remember back in the days of You-know-who and nobody thought he would ever be defeated, and then along comes little Harry Potter and poof! You-know-who's gone! Then he comes back and what should happen again? Harry Potter makes 'im disappear again and for good this time!"
Albus, who was used to this kind of attention but not someone shouting it at the top of their lungs, blushed and tried to ignore the stares of everyone around him. "Er, nice to meet you."
"You, too," the old man smiled, "And who are these girls? Have you got yourself two girlfriends, Johnny-Boy? I wouldn't recommend it. I did it once and wound up with no girlfriends after they found out!"
"No, Grandpa," John laughed, "They're just friends. Amanda Tagger and Rose Weasley."
"Are you sure? I could see you with the redhead. Just wait till you're older."
"Just friends, Grandpa," John's cheeks turned red.
"He's like the male version of Muriel," Albus whispered to Rose.
"Muriel!?" John's grandpa shouted. Albus jumped. He hadn't expected that the elderly man would be able to hear him. "I used to know a Muriel! Went to school with her. Then she married some Weasley. I haven't seen her in decades!"
Albus looked at Rose. What a coincidence. "Er, Albus and I have an Aunt Muriel Weasley," Rose giggled.
"Well I'll be! I should owl her sometime."
"I'm sure she'd love that," Rose smiled.
"We're going to have to go now," John's mum announced.
"See you later," John waved.
"Bye," Albus grinned.
"Tell your dad I said hi!" John's great-great grandpa shouted.

Albus spent the next few days hanging around Grimmauld Place with James and the rest of his family. Lily was thrilled to have both her brothers and her dad home and she had been demanding to know everything that had gone on the past term.
"That way I'll know everything about Hogwarts before I'm even there!" she said excitedly at breakfast the day before Christmas Eve. "You still haven't told me how I'll get sorted."
"We're not going to tell you, Lily," Ginny smiled as she handed Lily a glass of juice, "It's a surprise."
"That's not fair," Lily whined.
"Nobody told me or Al how we got sorted, so how is it not fair for you not to know?" James asked.
"I'm the youngest. I should know everything about Hogwarts because you two have been there for a few years! And then all the Muggle-born kids will ask me questions and I'll be able to answer them."
"You'll find out soon enough, Lily," Ginny assured her.
"How much longer?" Lily asked excitedly.
"There's still 9 months."
"That's forever!"
"She's going to be a nightmare this summer," James whispered to Albus.
"Morning, everyone!" Harry descended the steps into the kitchen and pulled up a chair.
"Hi, Dad," Albus greeted him.
"Hey, Ginny?" Harry asked as he grabbed the Prophet, "Have you seen the Marauder's Map?"
James choked on his juice and sprayed it across the table at Albus, as he turned bright red.
"Ew, watch it!" Albus jumped back.
"You ok, James?" Harry looked at him curiously.
"Fine. The article on the front of the paper, it's, er, shocking," James blushed some more and pointed to the front of the Prophet, which was facing him.
"Witch Tries to Decrease Size of Her Ears, Charms Them Off Instead?" Harry read.
"Yes, very shocking. People ought to be more careful!" James sputtered. He gave Albus a look that Albus interpreted to mean 'meet me upstairs'. James excused himself and ran out of the room.
"What's with him?" Harry asked.
"No idea," Ginny shrugged.
"Er, I've got to go change," Albus jumped up and followed James. Harry had noticed that the map was gone! Now he was going to have to give it back. Albus was going to miss it, but it would only be a matter of time before he had the other one working.
"Albus!" James pulled him into the drawing room and shut the door. "He wants the map back!"
"I kind of figured that," Albus smirked, "We're just going to have to sneak it back into his room. Let's do it now."
"Wait, Albus!" James grabbed his arm, "The thing is, er, well, I..." He shuffled from foot to foot looking very nervous.
"What?"
"I, er, can't find it!" James whispered. "What am I going to do? I can't have lost it...."
Albus started laughing. "It's not funny!" James insisted.
"You didn't lose it!" Albus grinned, "I've got it. I took it from you months ago and didn't want to give it back."
"You idiot!" James shouted, "Here I thought I'd lost it and you stole it from me!"
"It doesn't matter now. We've got to give it back anyway."
"You're giving it back. You're the one who stole it from me."
"Well you stole it from Dad in the first place," Albus reminded him.
"Only to get you out of trouble!"
He had a point there. If Albus hadn't have been in Kendrick's office the previous year, James never would have taken the map in the first place. "All right. I'll just go sneak it into his room. Maybe he'll think he just forgot to bring it to Hogwarts."
"Let's hope so. Go do it now."
Albus nodded and ran up to his bedroom. He knew his dad would want the map back eventually, he just hadn't given it much thought. At least he hadn't noticed it was missing at school. Albus threw open his trunk and rifled through his school stuff. He still hadn't unpacked everything or packed a bag for his stay at the Burrow. The map was inside the photo album Albus found over the summer, along with the new map. Hopefully they wouldn't need the Marauder's Map to decipher the new map. Albus pulled out the map and ran into his parents' room. He shoved the map under a pile of defensive magic books and quickly left the room.
"Done?" James asked anxiously when Albus ran back into the drawing room.
"Yup. I put it under a stack of books, with one corner sticking out."
"Perfect. You might want to go change your shirt now."
"Oh, right," Albus looked down at his juice splattered t-shirt, "Thanks for that, by the way."
"No problem," James laughed, "Come to me for all your juice spraying needs."
"I'll do that," Albus rolled his eyes as he left the room to change his shirt.
