Dursleys are cut from GoF

Postby Violet » Wednesday 7 April 2004 5:36:35pm

The Dursleys are to be cut from the movie of GoF because of the length of the film....
The actor Richard Griffiths who plays Uncle Vernon even asked JK Rowling if they could go to an open day at Hogwarts but she said no. But they do hope to be back for the fifth film

How would the movie open if not with Harry at the Dursley's?
This stragity makes no sense to me.
Harry leaving the Dursley's through the busted up fireplace and Dudley and the ton tounge toffee need to be seen!!!!

Personally I think that if this is true it is a poor choice. You only need about seven minutes to cover the required material.

Yeah, but that 7 minuets could be what makes them decide to make it two two hour movies, instead of one 4 hour and 7 minuets movie,

that seven minutes is valuable explaining time to the audience e.g. at the end when crouch explains all!

they might incorporate the toffee's into the burrow scenes. maybe they get bill or charlie with one!

Well i think that they're planning on starting either in the burrow or at the world cup. by the looks of things if they are gunna cut out big things like the start of the book then they're only going to have one movie

Well Violet if you are correct in this I will most likely not bother with the movie, except maybe rent it when it leaves the threaters.
If there is too much material then you have to either have a two part movie or just a really long single movie.
There is a lot to GoF but look at OotP.
If hughe major chunks are left out of #4 because of length then what must they leave out of #5?

LOTR were all extreamly long movies and I had no problem sitting through them at the theaters.

I would sit through a proper GoF and OotP. But I must say I do not have much interest in a cut up seriously lacking version of my curent favorite set of books.

My guess is that the whole episode before Harry goes to the World Cup will just be referenced (possibly Fred and George still in trouble about the ton-tongue thing, which is actually the only thing of consequence), and we'll meet Bill and Charlie at the World Cup...

I can understand them cutting out big parts. The target audience for the movies is still younger than the target audience for LOTR, and they won't want to sit through a four-hour movie... and Matrix was enough proof in my book to discourage just about any movie from doing the two two-hour movies...

I don't like it, but I trust the writers to make it good (it's still the same guy, with lots of help from Rowling). I'll still see it. Honestly, in book 4, there's just not much point to the Privet Drive scenes and there's a LOT of action that has to be covered... I'm personally glad they're taking this part out instead of some others.

I'm not suprized they're cutting the Dursleys from GOF... I'd hate to not see Richard Griffiths and Fiona Shaw, because I think they're great, but, truth be told, the Dursleys is the one scene in GOF that is strictly there for humor. The only thing of consequence is that Fred and George ton-tongue Dudley, and that could just as easily be slipped in without showing it (aka. they're still in trouble for it, or they do it to someone else, but I think they'll still just be in trouble for it, and it's mentioned that way). Oh yeah, and they're scared of Sirius, but that could easily be done in just a little comment... ("Did your aunt and uncle give you a hard time this summer, Harry?" "No, they were too afraid of Sirius finding them if I said they did anything wrong.")

I think GoF will probably start at the Burrow, very shortly after Harry arrives. That way, we get some introduction to where they're going, but it'll be a short scene, probably meeting Bill and Charlie there or just meeting them at the World Cup. If they're there at all (and they BETTER be).

I'll still go see it, though, because I trust the writer (still the same guy with lots of help from Rowling) to do it justice, even if they have to cut out the big scenes. It's obvious, I think, that they had to. I mean, I've heard lots of the arguement that LOTR were long movies. Well, LOTR was an older target audience. And the two two-hour movies sound too much like what Matrix tried (and failed). I think trimming the story down to one two-and-a-half hour movie is the smartest thing.

*just stares at Fluffy Bear* then read the books and don't bother watching the movies...

I personally like the differences in the movies, as long as they stay true to the characters and the essentials... As much fun as the Dursley scenes are, they're not essential in this particular movie (however, I withdraw my standing-up-for-them status if they try to figure out a way to cut the Durlseys from OotP).

I watch the movies to get a somewhat different take on the books... I don't watch the movies in hope that they're in sync with my own imagination.

oh yeah, my husband wanted to know where you got the story about the Dursleys being cut from GoF... he said, this early on, he wouldn't put too much stock in this story... it's just as likely it's just a rumor.
