This seems to be official as it was on Chanel 4 news tonight. Michael Gambon takes over from Richard Harris as the new Albus Dumbledore. Filming on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban starts next week.

Next 'Potter' film Dumbledore chosen

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- "Harry Potter" has a new schoolmaster: Michael Gambon.

The Irish-born actor is replacing Richard Harris, who died last year, as Albus Dumbledore in the third installment of the "Harry Potter" series, Warner Bros. announced Friday.

"Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" is filming in England, and Gambon's casting had been a closely guarded secret. Others mentioned as possible candidates for the role included Christopher Lee, Ian McKellen and Peter O'Toole, who had a longtime friendship with Harris.

Gambon, 62, is best known for his roles as the wealthy murder victim in 2001's "Gosford Park" and the sinister landowner in 1999's "Sleepy Hollow." He also starred as President Lyndon Johnson in the 2002 TV movie "Path to War."

Harris, who died in October at 72, was best known for playing combative, iconoclastic characters in films such as "This Sporting Life," "Unforgiven" and "A Man Called Horse." (full story) He to ok the role of the gentle, professorial old wizard in the "Harry Potter" films because a young granddaughter was a fan of the books.

Although Harris, who was born in Ireland, had signed to appear in the third film, his health began to fail shortly after he completed work on the second movie in the series, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."

Warner Bros. also announcend that Gary Oldman would play the "Prisoner" of the title, a mysterious character named Sirius Black who escapes from the magical prison of Azkaban and seems to be stalking Potter and his friends.

Worldwide sales of J.K. Rowling's first four "Harry Potter" books top 190 million copies, and the upcoming fifth installment, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," is set to hit bookstores June 21 with a first printing of 6.8 million.

The film version of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" collected $317.5 million at the domestic box office, while last fall's "Chamber of Secrets" has earned about $260.5 million.

CoS was about 2 hrs. and 40 min.

I don't think it will be too much longer, but perhaps 3 hours.

Here's a pic of Gambon for those who don't know him
http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&cf=gen&id=1800018836

Fierce looking Irish actor, described by the late Sir Ralph Richardson as "The Great Gambon." Very renowned, respected and revered (even if he was in Ali G in the House =P). He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1992.

Next is Sirius Black, who will be played by Gary Oldman (I honestly don't know a single thing about him... except that he's been tipped to play Black for a while now)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/737487.stm

Timothy Spall will play Petter Pettigrew, again someone fill him in for me =P
http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=18 ... en&intl=us

Also, there's Pam Ferris... who will be aka Aunt Marge

And...... *drum roll*... Remus Lupin's shoes will be filled in by David Thewlis.
http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hc&id=18 ... 40&intl=us

Oh, and Sir Cadogan will be Paul Whitehouse.

On a sadder note (utterly heartrendering), Cho Chang hasn't been picked out yet *sigh*... gonna have to wait another few months before we can all worship her

And almost forgot, they've changed the director too... so no more Chris Columbus (who incidently picked Daniel Radcliffe out himself at a theatre). New director is Alfonso Cuaron

*PS* Paul could u help me out with uploading the pics?! Soree! =P

I saved this for last.... Tom the Leaky Caudron innkeeper will be Jim Tavare
Oh man, if he's anything like himself in The Sketch Show we're in for a lot of laughs, everything that guy does is funny!!! Guess they've replaced the original Tom from Philosopher's Stone.

Here's a pic for those who don't know him:

For people in the UK, Gary Oldman is on UK television tonight at 12.30am on ITV, starring as Zorg in the movie The Fifth Element. Its a brilliant science fiction movie which also stars Bruce Wllis and contains one of my favorite movie lines "Leeloo Dallas Multipass ... Mul-ti-pass".

Draco - Thanks for the info about the members of the cast. I've replaced the pictures with links to webpages containing pics of the actors as I can't upload them due to copyright considerations, and can't allow hotlinking I'm afraid. I couldn't find all the pages where you found all the images (and couldn't find any webpages with pictures of Pam Ferris yet) so some I've replaced with pages I could find. I've kept details of the image urls you originally posted so if you'd rather I link to alternative web pages where you found the original images, but can't remember the urls of the images themselves, all is not lost :) .

Well, I don't happen to live in the UK (which sucks), so I won't be able to see that. :(

Sorry RavenEye. It's probably available on video or DVD though if you have a player. It's a great movie and I'd really recommend it, particularly if you like science fiction.
