I disagree, to some extent at least. The sorting hat decides which person would have wanted you in their house the most. Choice becomes a factor only because the founders wouldn't want someone in there house who didn't want to be in it.

I don't think there is some complex unlying what ever, I seriously doubt JKR would have taken the time think it all up.

You guys remind me of these cult guys who became enthralled with a direct to video release last year that had lots of plot holes. They fanbase that became enthralled with it and tried to reason out reasons why certain things were happening, they came up with lots of perfectly good reasons, but, what it turn out was it was put together by a first time director who wasted all his time shooting and had to edit the movie in 15 minutes, and that it truelyy had only peiuce of a plot there was never any reasoning behind what happened, they didn't have time to make up reasons for everything, just as JKR doesn't have time to make up reasons for every last element of her book, she just puts things out there. That's what make the story so real, you don't really know. Nothing is even implied.

But the sorting does say that it determines what founder would have wanted to teach you the most, and that is eactly what I think it does, no more, and no less. There is no reason why it would be more complicated than that, not one. At lerast not one you have pointed out.

I'm not sure I understand you Person#11. And take that only as an indication of my own poor perception. It's also possible that I can't read.

Are you saying that (for example) when the Sorting Hat sat on top of Ron Weasley's head, the Sorting Hat knew that Godric Gryffindor would have wanted to teach him?

The sorting hat decides which of the four teachers would have wanted to have toaught them most it jibberes about this constantly. So it jumps in Rons head and decides which one of the teachers would have wanted to teach this person the most and it decided Godric Gryfinndor would have.

Holly, I am still confused. Can you translate for Person#11?

I'm just not getting the "jumps inside his head" part. Nor am I getting the part about the Sorting Hat choosing houses according to the founding father/mother who would have most wanted to teach a student.

I think I still maintain that as a partial explanation the Sorting Hat sees qualities that are not yet on the surface and places students in the houses that will develop those qualities.

I would have to disagree with that theory, Person#11. When you're creating a continuing story line over 7 novels, you can't just wing it and hope that you don't contradict yourself 3 books down the road. Now, I don't mean to imply that JKR wrote a master's thesis on the mechanics of the sorting hat, but she would have developed a rudimentary theory on its abilities.

Now.... about our little "cult" here. We're an online community discussing fictional works of fantasy, a little role playing, theorizing, and a lot of joking around. We range in age from 14 to 54, we're polite, we're considerate , we don't take ourselves to seriously and we have fun. That doesn't sound like such a bad place to me....

Hi Colin. Are you 57? I'm almost 39, but glad for the "adult" company. Here's to always being young at heart! :)
