I think that "thrown out" would mean out of their year... I mean, it isn't very fair if thay are expelled if they don't pass their exams!! And DD would always give a second chance to everyone !

yeah, i think it was more like they were *hoping* he would get actually thrown out (not just held back, after all, he could torture them as well being in a different class as he could being in the same class), but i don't think they ever really believed he *would* get thrown out... Fred and George managed to be sent through 6 times, after all, and it's more of a hazard having magical people out there not able to control and use their powers than it is having them plod along through school, so I don't think dumbledore would really kick a student out for not passing classes...
