Harry's dream (part I)

Postby Jotomicron » Monday 29 March 2004 11:02:35pm

Sorry, this post will be rather long...

Ok... Open your copy of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer(sp) Stone" (Or Philosopher Stone) in he last page of chapter VII. (Funny: in the portuguese version, it's on page 111!)

Now, read Harry's dream. We know dreams have a further meaning, at least in HP world, cause he dreams about Sirius flying motorbike, and it's during the sleep they are most able to receive teh "energies from beyond"... (ok.. I didn't find out a better expression!)

He was wearing Quirrel's "hat" which was saying him to go to Slytherin. At first, it might seem that it's only related to the Sorting hat, when it said Harry would be well in Slytherin. But I don't think it's just that: Quirrel's "hat" (sry, I don't know the real word) is a symbol for Voldemort. Does Voldemort want Harry in the Slytherin team? It seems really unlikely: Voldemort wouldn't care in which team Harry is. But... What if Snape is bad (and only if he is bad), and Voldemort knows it? Would he prefer Harry in Slytherin, so Sanpe could spy on Harry?

Bah, I'm too lazy to go and get my SS book so I'm gonna rely on the ol' memory! :-)
I think I see what you are saying. I personally think that that dream was one of the first signs of the Harry-Voldemort brain/thinking connection.

By the way, its called a turban

first off, I gotta mention not all dreams mentioned have a "further meaning" :)
I think there are some regular dreams there, before some quidditch game he dreams the slytherins will be riding dragons etc.

This dream however is different I think, as you've spotted :) I do think that the turban talking to him does have something to do with the voldemort-Harry connection, cause the turban forcing him to become a slytherin is too far fetched, I doubt he would have dreamed it otherwise.
Or he does have a very accurate imagination.

I read the dream just now and I am not sure I agree that it was a Voldemort thing.
The reason is that Harry really didn't want to be put in Slytherin and it has bothered him that the sorting Hat seemed to think he belonged there.
As for Malfoy laughing at him while he struggled with the turban that seems to me to be a normal 11 year old fear of being laughed at by a classmate.

Now that fact that he was wearing the Turban, that I guess I can see as a Voldemort connection as he was hiding underneath it eventually.
I say eventually because in GoF when Voldemort tells the DE about quirrel he says:

"Oh, he seemed the very chance I had been dreaming of... for he was a teacher at Dumbledore's school... he was easy to bend to my will,,, he brought me back to this country, and after awhile I took possesion of his body to closely supervise him as he carried out my orders...."

I agree that it is a hint or a forshadowing of things to come.

Ok, I just read that part in SS.
The reason is that Harry really didn't want to be put in Slytherin and it has bothered him that the sorting Hat seemed to think he belonged there.

I agree with that.
Now that fact that he was wearing the Turban, that I guess I can see as a Voldemort connection as he was hiding underneath it eventually.

And that too.
Hmm...now I'm not so sure if the dream is that significant or not. I just talked myself out of it!

Maybe the point of the dream was to bring our attention to the turban in the first place... I mean, I'm talking from Rowling's point of view, not Harry's. When I first saw the Sorcerer's Stone, and when I first read it, I didn't realize that Rowling was dropping hints left and right. And I never questioned the turban, assuming that maybe Quirrell just had a weird quirk of having a fondness for weird headpieces... to top it off, one of the kids says that they think that he has garlic under there to ward off vampires, and he certainly seems fearful, so this made sense.

If the dream was put in there by Rowling for no other reason than to make us look at the turban and go, "hmmm..." then that's a hint to the storyline...because, as we all know, that turban, and what's under it, was the main mystery of the story.

I agree with Athena...I never really paid atention on turban,I thought that Quirell is just weird, and no one would really notice the turban like a big deal, but JKR tried to give us a hint.

While we're talking about hats you wonder about but just throw aside...

Ms. Rowling, if you're somehow reading this, is there anything about a lime-green bowler hat we should be aware of?
