Aberforth's crime

Postby Athena Appleton » Sunday 15 February 2004 7:14:37am

Okay, y'all, I was typing on a different thread and mentioned what Dumbledore said about Aberforth putting inappropriate charms on a goat, and my husband saw it, balked, and puzzled over it for the better part of an hour.....

WHAT KIND OF INAPPROPRIATE CHARMS CAN BE PUT ON A GOAT????

It just makes me nervous to think about the possibilities....

Lol! i dont know, really cant think of what 'inappropriate' charms he would have put on a goat.
but from that makes him sound a lot like Mundungus, doing something that stupid, but with no doubt some semi sensible idea in his head.

the possible meanings of "inapropriate charms" are certainly mind-boggling...

i agree with violet in that respect, he does actually sound a bit like mundungus. I wonder if Aberforth would be a part of the order too! Mundungus is...

Oh, I definately think Aberforth is a member of the order... for one thing, he was in the order before, but he wasn't seen a whole lot (Moody only saw him once)... he's probably got some job that we don't know about, but everyone in the original order either died, became a rat-fink, was tortured into madness or is in it now. I don't see why Aberforth wouldn't be in the order. The most we know about him is that he's Dumbledore's brother, he did something we all agree is wrong in every way to a goat, and he was a strange guy who Moody met once, but he was in the Order. I'm looking forward to getting better aquainted with this guy...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

haha, as i mentioned before, my husband's taken a particular interest in this subject This is his theory:

If Aberforth was old, "inappropriate charms on a goat" would be wrong in every way. If Aberforth was young and foolish, and had a twisted sense of humor, he could have put some kind of infatuation charm on the goat to make it fall in love with his [Aberforth's] enemies...

He's Dumbeldore's brother - he's got to be pretty good. Plus he survived LVs reign of terror the first time.

My guess is he's like Sherlock Holmes' brother - more intelligent but less famous.

maybe he is like Moody and Arthur...they put innapropiate charms on thigs like dustbins and cars and get away with it...innapropiate could mean against the rules because its not natural if a muggle sees it....but not really all that bad from a wizard point of view....perhaps he thought it was boring and made it a pretty colour

or sticking with the milk theme maybe he tried something to enhance it

or didn't Dumbledore say he couldn't read (I'm sure it was something to do with news paper stories that this was mentioned and how Aberforth didn't take any notice of them when they reported his innapropiate charms on a goat but that could have been just because he couldn't read to know what they were saying about him), maybe it was a complete accident

I've heard a theory that Aberforth is the barman in the Hogs Head.
Harry says that he thinks he looks familiar and in my experience JKR doesn't mention things like this unless she means it to be part of a later plot. Also why bother going to so much trouble to describe another pub in Hogsmead unless you needed to bring it in later on. (Didn't Harry say 'there was a strange smell that might have been goats' I'm not quite sure because I haven't got my books with me)
AND what better a place for DD to be able to hide in when he leaves in OoTP and still keep an eye on things.

First of all welcome to BAO :D hope you enjoy posting!, secondly i checked in my copy of OotP and yes there was a strange smell of goats in the hogs head! well done for noticing! and yes the barman did look familiar to harry at first i thought this was the person from the order but then i realised it was the witch!! so there is nothing to disprove this theory at all! I'm for it!! :D

very cool! way to go, whoever thought of him being the barkeep at The Hogs Head... and to whoever compared him to Mundungus... reckon they're friends? Wasn't Mundungus a customer the day the DA met for the first time?

my husband's theory after hearing the possibility that Aberforth is the barkeep: the goat's female and the "inappropriate charm" made her milk ale or something instead of milk. It's a thought.

But Mundugus was barred, so had to keep in disguise. Surely, if the barman was Aberforth and he was in the ordr (which I think is strongly hinted at) then he would allow Dung in to keep an eye on Harry.

Nice try though! :D
