According to Rowling, the only witches/wizards who become ghosts after death are those who had an unhappy life before they died. Like Moaning Myrtle... she was picked on constantly before the Basilisk killed her. I don't recall what the other ghosts stories are, or if they had any, but that is how Rowling explained it.

But Professor Binns is a ghost, so he must have had an unhappy, life, though it was not dwelled on too much in the books. Also, Nearly Headlesss Nick is a ghost, and he seemed to have an OK life.

Well, Shadow . . . think about it, Professor Binns had to teach History of Magic. Don't you think that's a pretty miserable life?

As for Nearly Headless Nick- remember, he was bitter about his head not being completely cut off. Maybe it was the beheading that made him bitter. That could be why he'd be a ghost despite having an OK life.

Also remember this: we know hardly anything about the two ghosts' lives, so there could be some deep, dark secret that Rowling has yet to uncover

I think i have to agree with C - i think Mrs Weasly will die. Having read all of the HP websites theorys for book 5 i think the Mrs Weasly theory was the most believable.

My Two Possibilities

Postby Lizzy Bennet » Monday 2 June 2003 9:56:59pm

I believe it'll either be Hagrid or Mrs. Weasley who dies in the 5th book . . . not that I'm looking forward to ANY death, particularly one of a character we've gotten to know.

I've read that the person who dies is a "big fan of Harry's" and that the death was "hard to write", according to J.K. Rowling. Hagrid, as has been stated, is J.K.'s favorite character, which would be hard to write. Likewise, J.K. lost her mother at a young age, so I imagine writing the death of a mother would be very hard for her as well.

I've just skimmed this thread and I know Hagrid was mentioned, but I'm not sure if Mrs. Weasley has. She's always been very motherly toward Harry, so I think it would hit him (and all the Weasleys) very hard if she were to die. It might be what prompts Ron to take a real stand against Voldemort (not that he wouldn't already, but you know what I mean).

Those are my 'top two', but if we're discussing 'big fans of Harry's' there is also Lupin and Sirius to consider . . . they are both big fans of Harry's as well. Additionally, like the people mentioned above, their deaths would certainly be hard to READ, if not to write! I'm dreading finding out who it is at all! It'll be the last time we read about a certain character (well, as a person as opposed to a ghost) . . . :crying:

Well, certainly it won't be Lupin, sinceJo has stated that he will play a major role in the seventh book.
I don't think Mrs. Weasley will die, I can't picture a sitatin in which she dies.
I think it will be Hagrid, most of the reasons have already been posted, and I think he could even be killed be his mom (that would also be very hard to write)

Ah, I see . . . thanks for the information, Neo! :D

But why would Hagrid's MOTHER kill him? What motivation would she have? I know some giants do tend to be violent, but I'm trying to imagine a situation that would cause Hagrid's mother to do such a thing. Certainly, that would be very hard to write AND read. :crying:

Well Ron mentioned that giants were very agressive, and Hagrid also said (while talking to Madame Maxime) that they weren't very maternal too.

But I still think that hagrid is the more likely candidate to be the one to die... it just seems to fit... :-?

Don't want to re-hash all I said last time, but it just seems that his part has finished...

I can't remember either.

And certainly it seems that Hagrid will die, but maybe that it was they want us to believe.

I think that Hagrid's death would be much easier to swallow than Mrs. Weasley's. I'm not sure why, it's just that Mrs. Weasley has been the mother figure throughout all the books and has 'been there,' in a sense, for each character at some point or another. It would be terribly difficult to read, (not to mention, to write.) :-(

But I'm still thinking it might be Neville (which I really hope it won't be,) or maybe Colin. The only thing that's making think no to Colin, is that we haven't become really attached to him. So it'd be a kind of Cedric-esque death, where it's sad, but not so difficult to take in. Will have to wait five more days...

Hagrid is a more important character than Mrs. Weasley, and I think Harry is still more attached to him than to Mrs. Weasley. Just like I belive most of the readers.
