Why is so little known about the Ravenclaw House?

Postby Lizzy Bennet » Sunday 8 June 2003 2:35:27pm

As I was choosing a House last night, I thought back on the books about the Ravenclaw House and I realized, more so than any other House, so little is known about it. We really don't know a lot about the kind of people who comprise the house, who and what the professors are like who belong to the house, or anything like that. For the most part (and by all means, correct me if I am wrong!) one of the few things we know about Ravenclaw is that Cho Chang (Harry's crush) is a member of that house, and we really don't even know that much about her! :-?

Gryffndor House, for obvious reasons, we know a great deal about, and the same goes for its more evil counterpart, Slytherin House. We know slightly less about Hufflepuff, but even those students and professors in that house we somewhat prominent in books 2 and 4. We, at least, got to know the kinds of students (and even the professors) in that house and what they are about. But other than Cho Chang being in Ravenclaw, we know next to nothing about that House, its members, or its ghosts. Why? :???:

More to the point, what do you think we'll learn about that house? Will it be important to the story? It's entirely possible that there are things mentioned about Ravenclaw, and if so, please post them on this thread! I just find it interesting that in four books (rather long books, too) that so little has been said about Ravenclaw. Oddly enough, I was somewhat surprised Hermione wasn't put in Ravenclaw, bright as she is. If you have any knowledge or thoughts on Ravenclaw, do be sure to post them . . . this house remains a mystery to me! :-)

Good point. I hadn't really noticed that before, but now that's it's brought up, I can think of only Cho and Rodger Davies as being Ravenclaw students. And that Penelope girl. I definitely think it will come into play later. I remember reading some JK interview where she mentioned that te Ravenclaw ghost was the Grey Lady and that we'd find something out about her later.

And about Hermione, I think that her placement in Gryffindor will become expanded upon more in OotP and onward. I mean, she's a good kid but hasn't come across as being terribly brave, yet. She definitely seems to have more of a Ravenclaw fit.

I'm not sure, I mean she is intelligent, but also went with Harry and Ron for the sorcerer's stone, no? And in book three she is the one that helps Harry at the end (and Ron in the second book, whick makes them even; since in the first one is the three of them, then Ron, then Hermione, and finally only Harry . Interesting, no?)

But definitely Harry's life (which is the one we read about) haven't come across too many things about Ravenclaw, except his crush, so I think this could be a good way for Jo to intriduce us to that house.

I'm more inclined to think that if we find out more about Ravenclaw, it will be thru the grey lady, rav's founder! After all, she is still haunting hogwarts, no!

Based on some name derivation: The only other Grey Lady I can think of in a historical sense was Lady Jane Grey, the neice of Henry VIII and successor to Edward VI. Shortly before she asceded to the throne, Edward removed his half-sister Mary and Elizabeth from the line, clearing Jane's way to the throne. She ruled for only nine days, due to the court declaring Mary the rightful queen. Jane was eventually executed, thought she really didn't have much to do with the whole affair.

I'm not too sure how it relates, but I just have a feeling that it'll come up again in later books.

Surely, and maybe Rowena was killed after 9 days of being Hogwart's headmistress?

Well Salazar went from Hogwarts, andthe three other wizards were still there.

Because the whole story concentrates on Gryffindor and Slytherin - the rival houses. Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw are not extreme.

At least thats what i think.

yeah, grey lady=RR, no i don't think so, and just in regard to the first post, there is only one teacher per house, which is the head of that house, the other teachers are just teachers and are not associated with the houses
