What's worse than death?

Postby choki » Saturday 19 July 2003 1:07:33pm

Voldemort's failure to understand there are things worse than death is his greatest weakness. But what are those things? Emotions? Or maybe Forgiveness from Harry(hardly possible)?

The locked room in DoM definitely has a power that Voldemort doesnt have...my guess is the feelings...but how could feelings destroy Voldemort since he's so heartless?

Two such examples;

1) Soulless as a result of a dementors kiss. This would be worse than death because it would seem, in JK's world at least, death isn't final.

2) Being tortured until your mind breaks and you can no longer function. For example the Longbottoms.

I think another one is shown when LV possesed Harry, the enourmous amount of pain made Harry yearn for death, so excessive pain is worse than death.

We have already seen that Harry managed to free himself from Voldemort's possession after he had felt emotions. These emotions thus can destroy Voldemort...

(This reminds me of the book I like so much, "Something Wicked This Way Comes" by Ray Bradbury. The idea is that there are people who live by taking in our tears and sufferings and the only way to destroy them is not to care or to remain cheerful. So they managed to kill the Witch by a bullet with a smile drawn on it.)

I do too. I believe it could be Soullessness or excesive torture. Or it could be different for different people. LV love, Harry a lack of companionship, etc.

Gypsy- I love anything by Ray Bradbury (Farenheit 451, etc.) and Something Wicked This Way Comes is my 7th favorite book (of course the first 5 spots are taken up by HP!) It's nice to know that someone else has heard of it!

But onto what this is all about...
I definitly think that love is a key thing in killing LV. It's like he can hurt Harry with hate (his scar hurting...) so Harry must be able to damage him with him love (like when Harry was possesed and he was thinking that if he died at least he'd see Sirius again...) I'm not sure exactly how this love will kill someone, because isnt like a violent emotion :) Maybe the love will weaken LV to the point that Harry can kill him in another way.

What i think will destroy LV is LOVE...

But to what is worse than death I think is being forgotten...

LV is trying to become the most powerful and most feared wizard of all time...everyone trembles at his name (this reminds me of Neil Simon's play FOOLS...Lord Tremble Tremble...lol) and aslong as people tremble at the sound of the name Voldemort he will always be remembered and feared. LV also wants his ideals of racism and such to be remembered as did Salzaar Slytherin...if LV and all he stands for is forgotten then the world is truly rid of him forever...after the confrontation in Godrics Hollow with James Lily and Harry, LV was never really gone...he lived on in the memories of everyone...

Hey, btw everyone should read the play FOOLS by Neil Simon...it is a riot...the best character is Slovitch the butcher...(that's was me as a freshman thespian...)

these can be 2 possibilities, but we should remember that DD is speaking .. and this "something worst than death" should be something only DD is able to do ...
i mean, he would NEVER call the dementors or torture someone, even if he's voldie

ya i couldn't imagine Dumbledore using Crucio on Voldemort...
Love and Forgiveness from the entire wizard community sounds better but i don't think it will be a good ending (happy though but totally out of place)

yeah, voldemort used to be able to be hurt by love, but with the "sacrafice" from harry to bring him back, he can touch him, well, maybe that could be love from his mother, but maybe love in another way can destroy him

yeah, i don't think that voldemort will be forgotten, i mean, i don't think that hitler will ever be forgotten, and as we have said, there is a big similarity between the two

Being forgotten is for sure worse than death, but I agree with Ju-Dedoh and the Sacred Guardian that Voldemort can't be forgotten.
Anyway, what may be worse than death for Voldemort ?
For a common person, seeing the death or the sufferings of the people you love maybe is almost worse than death, but maybe not for Voldemort.
He's too cynic and cold to feel these emotions...
But I think that lose his power, his prestige, his respect of his Death-Eaters, live in a world ruled by the people he hates, a world ruled by love and friendship, that will be worse than death for him.
But in my opinion that won't be the ending chosen by JK... :-?
Too happy, too easy...
In my opinion Voldemort will die in the end, even if there are things worse than death...
