Umbridge's Detention.

Postby Mint » Tuesday 4 November 2003 9:07:44pm

When I was reading the book - I was simply furious with Harry at that moment. WHy didn't he tell anyone of what Umbridge was doing, knowing fully well - that she was not suppose to do things like that. Making him bleed, even the fact that he had to spend most of the night there! It was all illigal.

And did he tell ANYBODY? No! Why?! Because he was afraid that poor Umbridge will get in trouble? :???:

I agree with you Mint, here I couldn't understand why Harry didn't just tell a teacher. I would have. I suppose he has too much pride.

Do u think his father would do the same??

Or may be Harry is just likes self-pity. I mean even if he is too proud to tell the teacher - why can't he tell his friends right away?

I agree with you. Maybe he thought hermione would fuss a lot or something. But he could still have told Ron.

Perhaps he doesn't want his friends to know abt it...thinking that he shouldn't make a fuss out of it...he want to keep that to himself

That is undoubtedly the reason why he didn't tell them but I don't think its a very good one.

Why was it not something to fuss about when he could have brought Umbridge's cruelty to an end? (by telling teachers and so on). Plus, he could have warned his friends to be more careful around her.

Have you noticed that Harry likes to keep waaay too many things to himself?? WHen DD asks him anything - its always nothing is wrong, im ok, so on.... And everytime he doesn't say smth to his friends or teachers - something bad happens!! I mean sure u dont want to be blabbing to just anyone....but his friends (DD is also a friend).....why doesn he ignore them like that?

Well Harry isn't perfect. He has a streak of independant pride in him which he inherited from his father. He doesn't want anyone to think he is going soft or cowardly.

Here're some passages from the book... they should explain why Harry didn't tell the teachers about Umbridge's way of punishing students...

Harry opened his mouth, closed it again and nodded. He was not really sure why he was not telling Ron and Hermione exactly what was happening in Umbridge's room: he only knew that he did not want to see their looks of horror; that would make the whole thing seem worse and therefore more difficult to face. He also felt dimly that this was between himself and Umbridge, a private battle of wills, and he was not going to give her the satisfaction of hearing that he had complained about it.
***********************************************************

The old hag!' Ron said in a revolted whisper as they came to a halt in front of the Fat Lady, who was dozing peacefully with her head against her frame. 'She's sick! Go to McGonagall, say something!'

'No,' said Harry at once. 'I'm not giving her the satisfaction of knowing she's got to me.'

'Got to you? You can't let her get away with this!'

'I don't know how much power McGonagall's got over her,' said Harry.
'Dumbledore, then, tell Dumbledore!'

'No,' said Harry flatly.

'Why not?'

'He's got enough on his mind,' said Harry, but that was not the true reason. He was not going to go to Dumbledore for help when Dumbledore had not spoken to him once since June.
***********************************************************

'I still reckon you should complain about this,' said Ron in a low voice.

'No,' said Harry flatly.

'McGonagall would go nuts if she knew —'

'Yeah, she probably would,' said Harry dully. 'And how long do you reckon it'd take Umbridge to pass another decree saying anyone who complains about the High Inquisitor gets sacked immediately?'

Ron opened his mouth to retort but nothing came out and, after a moment, he closed it again, defeated.

Guess from these passages, besides pride, he also thinks that there was no use telling the teachers since it'll get them into trouble too...

I would complain if I was on Harry's place because Umbridge did really sick things and I'm sure Dumbledore, McGonagoll or Hagrid would've helped him. I was frustrated when he told Ron only, Umbridge was torturing him, but no... He didn't want her to think that he can't handle that. I think that's the reason he didn't tell anyone. He didn't want her to think that he's too weak for that. Poor Harry :(

Silly Harry... he should have told a teacher. Even if they didn't have the power to stop Umbridge doing it, they could have stopped the throbbing in his hand better than the murtlap tentacles.

I was very mad at him because I thing Dumbledore would be able to "record" her evil doing and use it as evidence against her.

I think that he should have said it to McGonagall and not to Dumbledore. I mean, all that thing about DD avoyding Harry could have made him to become even more upset. But I'm sure McGonagall would have said it to DD and it cud be sorted or he could find someway of ease thwe pain!!!
