Can you run away from a spell?

Postby Mint » Friday 2 May 2003 4:45:46pm

After being bullied by 12321  I was thinking - how come they don't just run from a spell while its being cast?

I mean the wond is pointing in a specific direction, but if a person moves (a lot) - it just HAS to miss them.

I realize why like James Potter couldn't run from a spell - he had nowhere to run. But it is possible, isn't it?

it is possible...harry does it quite alot....he ran from voldemort at the end of book four.....he ducked to avoid the stupefy spells at the start of book four....

it depends on your reactions doesnt it....if your arent fast enough to cast the expelliarmus spell or the appropiate block spell.....then would you be fast enough to duck or run...

Harry is...because hes a seeker so he has fast reactions....but i bet neville couldnt....i dont think ron or hermione could either without harry's help

It is very likely for Mint to forget moving when someone casts a spell.

I would agree that He can get away because of his speedy reactions, but also that the fact that he was at a distance would help! Along the lines of, the further away you are, they more likely you will be able to dodge the spell!!! :P

I would think it possible to dodge away from a spell, but not be able to outrun one (as in travel faster than it.) Assuming that a spell travels at the speed of light, which makes sense since light is emitted from one's wand when a spell is cast, it would be impossible to ever outrun a spell. I mean, it's scientifically impossible to exceed the speed of light <Go Einstein and Relativity!> so the only way that Harry was able to escape was by moving out of the way or by hiding behind other objects.

well...i nerver imagined them running along infront off a spell...whenever i think run away from a spell i think run sideways.....run in the direction that puts you out of range fastest...thats always gonna be sideways....like harry does in book four in his attempt to get to the port key

Ok, ok I won't pick on Mint (in this thread).
Sonkem is right, the only way to escape from a spell is sideways. And you should be very fast, I mean a shot can be missed if the person moes in the exact moment, it should be the same way with spells.

Yeah, that's what I meant, but along the lines of, if the guy casting the spell is further back, you've got a few split seconds more to jump behind something!

And in 4 at the graveyard, they were hitting the headstones, weren't they? *the spells that is!!!* So maybe you could just be off target when aiming too??? Who knows? :-?

What if you r standing in front of the mirror?

Like if someone casts a spell on you and you are blocking the mirror and then you move away. Would it bounce on them?

(prob. not.....just a thought)

Only if it was made of something like light ... otherwise it wouldnt' reflect off the mirrored surface...

*Pulls out want to try the theory out*

Okay, who wants to stand infront of the mirror??? ;)

Well it depends on the spell, and what are made of; maybe certain kinds of spells actually reflect in a mirror.
