What if Wizards actually paid attention to muggle technology

What would have happened if The Sorting Hat had insisted on sorting Harry into Slytherin? Or what if Harry had become friends with Draco Malfoy instead of Ron during their first journey on the Hogwarts Express? Wander into alternative Harry Potter universes here.

What if Wizards actually paid attention to muggle technology

Cell phones, internet, television, mp3 players; You'd wonder why there are no wizard equivolents. I mean, some of the things they use are just inconvenient. I'd like to see portable shinging things young wizards use so they dont have to stick their head in a fire

but muggle technology wouldn't work...or at least of the sort you are talking about it wouldn't work. If you pay attention to Hermione it sounds like electricity and radio waves and the like short out or don't work in the prescence of magic. They are the muggle equivalent of what the wizards have been doing for much longer so the wizards don't need them. Admittedly putting your head in a fire seems more scary than a mobile but thats only from Harry and Hermione's point of view as they lived the muggle life first. Its doesn't bother Ron in the slightest but it was awfully funny when they tried to use a phone or post a letter the muggle way.

I mean, fire network (its done on the floo powder network) seems more reliable than a phone unless you want to call a muggle which most wizards don't. Specially as they don't need to muck around with matches and firelighters to start the fire, they can just use magic. Then so long as its on the floo network they can talk to other wizards using it just like a muggle can use a phone if its connected and all payed for. But a wizard can't drop a fire and break it and a fire will never get out of date or die from over use because its new everytime it is lit. Plus using a fire than can see each other without needing to buy ridiculously expensive video phone.

oh and they don't need tv either because the photos in the newspaper move. TV is not necessary anyway, I don't watch it while I'm at uni, its only something that seems important if its sat in front of you and you start watching a series.

I never said I wanted muggle technology used, I just would like to see a wizard equivolent. My major problem with the fire is that you have to have a fireplace connected, and then you have to kneel, and go through the inconvenience of sitcking your head in the flame to go through that unpleasant sensation only to make a call. Also, letters still have to be sent by post... Sirius's mirror was a good example of a wizard equivolent, but we dont see people walking around with little pocket mirrors talking. It doesn't have to be electronic, but it does have to do similar things. You don't hear about collapsable brooms or things like that... Why in God's name are they still using quills?

As for TV, no, you don't need it, but it's still nice to have. The wizarding way has you throwing out a paper a day. A better method does exist somewhere, why is no one writing it

I agree. The only reason I watch tv, is for the news, and for interesting things on the history channel (unfortunately those dont come around often...) that equls about 90 minutes of tv a day. the rest of my time is spent reading, studying, cleaning, babysitting, coming here, or organizing/playing soccer, street hockey, and basketball games in my neighborhood.

wizards have siblings, quidditch, books, and school (along w/ cleaning if they choose) to keep them busy as well, and the news is the prophet (among other things). They have plenty to keep them busy and they seem happy with it... :)

Yes it dosen't seem like they really need it. And your right about it going fuzzy near magic, at least when it's near Hogwarts.
