Harietta Potter

What would have happened if The Sorting Hat had insisted on sorting Harry into Slytherin? Or what if Harry had become friends with Draco Malfoy instead of Ron during their first journey on the Hogwarts Express? Wander into alternative Harry Potter universes here.

Wow, Harrietta is doing me proud....*big sob of pride*

I really have to admit, I agree with the idea that the books just wouldn't sell as well if the main character were a girl. And, very sadly but very truthfully, the books would probably get shelved with stories like THE BABYSITTERS CLUB (closet BSC lover) and Sabrina, the illustrated edition. O_o

Just a thought

also, jk rowling herself would have a much different take on the story since she herself was once a girl, whereas she has to imagine what being a boy is like

I do not doubt that Harrietta would get bullied at least in the psychological sense...verbal and mental abuse knows no gender...(I am not saying that physcial abuse does not exist between small boys and girls, but less common because of what western culture teaches us)

...I am just saying that boys such as Dudley (no matter how crude) would probably think twice about physically abusing a small girl, just because of the things people might say if he beat up a girl...but Dudders and the Durselys would still bully Harietta in the mental and verbal sense I feel...

True, true.

I think that it might be more difficult to follow (maybe) for us getting into Harrietta's head, because I read somewhere that not only are women the stronger s*x, but Lime Jell-O and men share the same amount of brain waves. Well, the Jell-O matches the man's, anyway. So, Harrietta's thoughts may be too complex for the male readers. Not like they're slow or anything....

The Malfoy-Potter dynamic would definitely change. Even Malfoy wouldn't get away with harassing a girl all the time. I suppose there's still Millicent and Pansy to pick up the slack, but their parents aren't Death Eaters are they?

The way the books work, and the overall "feel" of them would change completely IMHO.

Everything in the books are from Harry's POV; the raging testosterone, the ego-feuled jelousy, the male bonding with Lupin etc. Much of this stuff would just not work with a girl as the lead character.

The books might work with Harrieta instead of Harry, but it would have been a lot harder to pull off. Like somone said earlier, girls will (genrally) read books about both male and female antagonists, but guys will genrally stick to reading about male antagonists, unless there is sufficient reason to read it anyway. In other words, the books would have to be VERY good, and not too girly (BSC for example :p).

If JKR were to simply change the name "Harry" to "Harrietta" and make only the absoloute necisarry changes in character interactions, then the books would suck (IMHO).

If the books were to work, she would need to completly pull the books apart, and then put them together in a way that would totally change the overall "mood" of the books. Otherwise HP would indeed be shelved with the Baby Sitters Club.

Perhaps it would suit the "mood" of the books if they had a stronger Paganist theme along with the new female lead. This would make them somewhat cool (and controversial!), and would make them less girly.

However, as the books are currently, magic is not a major theme, it is merely the way in which the books are presented. If more focus were to be put on the actual magic (or "magick" as the case may be) itself, then they would be essentially quite different books.
