Hagrid and the Giants (spoilers)

Postby Lizzy Bennet » Wednesday 25 June 2003 12:04:22am

What did you think of Hagrid and Madame Maxime's quest to seek out the giants and gain their support? Since I suspected, at different times, everyone to die, I was particularly worried about Hagrid being killed by the giants...or, later on, killed by his brother, Grawp. :-(

Grawp, like Luna Lovegood, is given his own chapter, making me think we haven't heard the last from Grawp! What role do you think he'll play in the future? I hope Hagrid doesn't die by his hands later on . . .

Thinking on that, did Hagrid leave or was he taken away at the end of book 5? I can't remember (which is terrible, I know!). I remember Harry and Hermione's (as well as Ron, though he wasn't there) promise to Hagrid that if Hagrid wasn't there, they'd look after Grawp. Though, who will do that in the summer when they're gone, I do not know. I wonder if they'll have to take care of Grawp in the next book . . . the centaurs certainly aren't happy to have humans in their midsts! :o

Any ideas on what role giants (particularly Grawp and Hagrid) will play in the future? :???:

Hagrid did flee at the end of the OWLs but now Dumbledore is back im sure Hagrid will follow so I don't think that Harry or Hermonie will have to worry about looking after him.

Anyway to the importance of Gwarp, I don't beleive for a second that the importance that Gwarp was to scare off the centuers, meaning that JKR would not of brought in a new charicture in my view just to save harry and hermonie, I mean she could of brought in the ford anglias for that if that was the case. So how could he become important, well ill have to think hard on that, maybe he could come in handy if he got intelligent quick to helping change the giants views on wizards. a possiblity, but unlikely I must amit, but im sure Gwarp will have a roll to play.

I have this bad feeling that Hagrid getting pummeled by his brother and our realizing how dangerous Grawp is may be foreshadowing Hagrid's eventual death in book 6 or 7.

That could be totally off-base...after all, so far, the people who have died thus far have died at Voldemort's or the Death Eaters' hands. Still, Hagrid seems determined to be in that forest with the dangerous Grawp and the very angry centaurs who do *not* want him there. :(

I just have a bad feeling something terrible is going to happen with the whole Hagrid/centaurs/Grawp situation...the centaurs do not want Hagrid nor Grawp nor any humans in their forest, Grawp is a loose cannon Hagrid's struggled to calm down, and Hagrid won't listen to reason. Hagrid's always been fond of dangerous creatures...I just have a bad feeling that might be his downfall. I hope not! I think Hagrid is a wonderful person and character, and not that Sirius wasn't a blow for Harry, but Harry's known Hagrid far longer...Hagrid's always been there for Harry!

What do you think will happen with Hagrid and his brother, Grawp? What about the other giants who seemed to have been swayed to the Death Eater's side? :???:

I know exactly what you mean Lizzie...When i was first reading the chapter on Grawp, I kept assuming that Hagrid was going to be killed right in front of Hermione and Harry. Hopefully, however, Hagrid will be able to tame his brother, and then use him to get more giants on DD's side!!! (Sorrie, i'm really quite optimistic)

I think Grawp will become teacher, as Hagrid. Namely, the Quidditch teacher : he certainly would be a fantastic keeper, and a -literally- deadly beater. He would not even need a broom to be at playing height !

I don't know about anyone else, but I still have a bad feeling about Grawp...I spent most of book 5 worried about Hagrid, and then when Grawp came back (even though, to some degree, I knew the death would be committed by Voldemort or one of his cronies or monsters), I kept worrying that Grawp would kill Hagrid. Or that maybe the centaurs would... :o

If you look at past books, JKR rarely introduces a character or a group without developing them further later on. Look at Dobby, for instance. He could have been a one-shot deal in CoS...someone who simply moved that plot along. And one might have thought that until they read GoF and saw Dobby resurface, along with Winky, who played a role in that plot. And that wasn't the end...houseevles were important in OotP...as was Hermione's organization, SPEW. What started as a clumsy houseelf trying to warn Harry became a much bigger deal than just that...I have to wonder if, in the next two books, JKR will do the same with Grawp. She already has with the centaurs...we saw them in book 1...and they resurfaced again in book 5.

Grawp running about that forest never to really be seen isn't a possibility for me. As for Grawp being a teacher...I don't know. Grawp still has the power to kill...even if he doesn't mean to. The centaurs are still mad as anything, and they are NOT happy about him being there. And we all know Hagrid isn't going to stay out of that forest...what are your thoughts on Grawp and JKR's future intentions for him? :???:

I'm not sure. Hagrid said there were only about 80 giants left, and they fight each other. Giants are unreliable allies, as they fight with each other and new people take command (like in OotP). One day, they might find themselves with a new leader, on the other side.

The things that do make giants powerful allies is that they are highly resistant to magic (the half-blood Hagrid shook off stunning spells by four fully trained Aurors, and beat them off with his strength).

But 80 giants just aren't enough. People like Dumbledore and Harry think around problems, and could stop them with the right magic. Maybe like turning the ground under their feet into a portable swamp (Fred and George) and stalling their ability to walk.

Ooh, I like that idea, I think that swamp could come in handy... and I'd love to have F&G saving the world, because they are my heroes!!!

I was afraid for Hagrid when R&H&H didn't know where he is and when they saw he was all full of injuries, but when I (we) found out that Grawp is his halfbrother and taht he injuries him, I wasn't afraid anymore. I didn't like the Grawp part in the 5th bookj so I hope he won't have a part at all in 6th book
