Welcome to BaO's Book of the Month discussions

Postby Paul » Monday 20 March 2006 3:25:56am

Hello :welcome: and welcome to BaO's new Book of the Month discussion forum. This part of the forum is totally new, so there may be a few bits of fine-tuning that may need to be done to get things running smoothly, but here's the basic idea of what I've got in mind....

For each month there will be a different book chosen. The book itself will be announced about a month or so before the discussions start, so as to give everyone who wants to participate the time to read it. For example, the book for discussion from 1st May will be The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein.

I'm, thinking that to give eveyone an equal chance to participate, the forum area for discussion of a particular month's book should maybe kept locked until the start of the book's month itself (for example The Hobbit forum area is currently locked until 1st May).

If you'd like to suggest a book for one particular month, please feel free to do so in this General Discussions area. The final decision on which book will be chosen for any particular month will, however, be the choice of the Moderators of the Book of the Month forum area (as at least one of the Moderators will need to read the book, so it needs to be something they think they'll enjoy or at least may wish to try).

I was just wondering...maybe we should post the little synopsis things that books always have when we choose a book so that people can come and see what the book is about and figure out if they want to go buy it or get it from the library.

Yeah, that seems like a good idea, justincase they haven't heard of it before and they want to read it, but want to know what it's about first...

This is an awesome idea Paul...I think I'll go read The Hobbit now...

Thanks, Paul, for the new section!

A very good idea, Scellanis!

I'll probably have to re-read The Hobbit soon.

Definitely a great idea, Scellanis. I've added a Pre-Discussion Synopsis in the Hobbit area...I've tried to give an idea of things without giving any spoilers. I'm only just over a third of the way through the book at the moment, so hopefully the synopsis is OK. :)

This is such a great idea! And The Hobbit is a really good book to start with. Can the books you recommend be by any author and for any age group- I may be 15 but I've been reading adult sci-fi/fantasy books since I was 7.

Yes, any author and age group is fine (as long as the book doesn't contain content that would be unsuitable for our younger members if they were to read it). I'm prety much a science fiction fan myself too, so although I can't speak for the other Mods, personally I'd very much welcome sci-fi suggestions. Any type of book (of any "genre") that you think would be a good and suitable idea can be suggested though.

I don't read sci-fi much...can't really help with that kind of suggestion...all I can suggest is fantasy really.

Wow, that's a great idea, Paul! :D

I'm not much a science-fiction fan either, I prefer fantasy books and many others, I read nearly everything. By the way, the first book that came to my mind for suggesting a book is "Mists of Avalon", I don't really know why (but that's a long book to read).

So the book of the month is Hobbit right now? (may)

Well, all I can say that it is a great book and I enjoyed it very much. ( Although, I love fairy tails in general!!) After attempting to read Lord of the Rings (never got past first couple of pages) I thought that I wouldn't be able to get through the Hobbit, but surprisingly it was an easy read. ^-^
