General LotR

Postby Charis » Sunday 31 August 2003 9:50:32pm

I know, I know... this is a Harry Potter forum. but there's gotta be quite a few people on here who like Lord of the Rings! So, i started this topic for general discussion about the books and movies of LotR.

Favorite books out of the series? Favorite movie so far? Like how the books have been translated into movies? Seen the special extended version DVD? and, to tie in HP somewhere, what similarities do you see b/w LotR and HP (there are alot, I'm sure!) of ocurse, these are simply questions to get you started. feel free to say anything else! :D

hope I get some good replies! :)

So far I like LotR movies 1 & 2. I don't like reading the book though. It's kinda boring.

Saw the first movie. Kinda boring.

Haven't seen the 2nd.

Read half of the 1st book. left it somewhere.

I tried to enjoy it but can't help dozing off.

The books are fabulous! I've read 'm twice, and I've also read The Hobbit and The Silmarillion (my favourite) twice :P. Ooh, I've also got Unfinished Tales, but I haven't read all of the stories in there.

The movies as such weren't bad, but in my opinion they were a terrible representation of the books. Also, they just don't grow on you like the books do, the story has lost it's particular charm. I do hope they do a better job with The Return of the King. They have a lot of story yet to tell, as they didn't include the entire story of book 2 in the second movie :-? ! at least if I remember correctly they hadn't included the entire story..

I absolutely love LotR

I got hooked when my big sis read me The Hobbit....now Ive read the books several times, even read the Silmarillion once but never again....

I have collected quite alot of the movie stuff, all the DVDs so far, the TTT chess set, some of the figures, cards, callendars, all sorts....

I cant wait to see RotK after watching the behind the scenes special on it in the TTT DVD.....you know, Ive even seen the ancient cartoon version of the movie but that is dreadful and I wouldnt recomend it...

and finally I have a massive obsession with hobbits, to the extent I copied all the family trees out of the back of my sister's book cos they werent in mine and persuaded her to teach me hobbit runes once.....forgotten them though :(

my fave tolkien book is The Hobbit and always will be....my fave movie so far would be the FotR one...i was rather depressed when I came out of the cinema after TTT cos it was so obviously wrong.....but now Im obsessed with it cos I have the DVD...but killing Haldir....eek

my fave characters are Samwise Gamgee, Bilbo Baggins and Glorfindel (for those movie fans, Arwen stole his part and his horse...he is an elf)

Ive drawn fan art and written fanfic for LotR....

Awesome, Sonkem! :) Glad to see such a big fan is here, as well as many others. :-)

I just re-watched "Fellowship of the Ring" on the extended version DVD for the first time...I can't wait to get "The Two Towers" on DVD and see it (even if it's just to rent it and see it rather than buy it), as I liked that movie even better than the first one! Also, my boyfriend has read all the books, like you, Sonkem, and he knows and likes the story really well...that whole Middle Earth world is truly fascinating!! It's mammoth! :D

I love LOTRs!
I'm waiting for the extended DVD for Two Towers. The two disc set is out already, but the four disc isn't out until mid-November. It's killing me!! The temptation of the 2 disc.... aaargh!

Does anyone else have a similar thing in their country?

lol
Well, it is my birthday soon, maybe someone will buy me the 2 disc set - and then I can have the 4 disc set for Christmas. I'll start dropping some hints! I know it takes a long time editing and compiling all the stuff to go on it, but it is so frustrating having to wait so long....

hehehe...its my brithday next week

i have nothing against the movie as a movie....

its just the movie as and interpretation of the books that annoys me....elves at helms deep...i can understand why he had to do it....but its just not what the elves tolkien wrote about would do.....especially the elves of lothlorien...i can see elves of rivendell possibly because elrond's sons did join aragorn and the rangers but not lothlorien...they isolated themselves...they wouldnt even let people travell through their lands so why would they help at the battle of helms deep

then we have the ents...he messed up their character...he made them seem less helpful and more heartless and stubborn...i mean they did take a while but in the book they chose to help during their ent moot...they didnt have to be tricked into it by the hobbits....

and finally we have faramir....they destroyed his character completely...he is meant to be the oposit of boromir, not the warrior but the learn intelligent man similar to aragorn and he choses to let the ring go at his hide out...he never tries to take it.....but the movie turns him into another boromir.....that was really disapointing...i think that was the main reason i hated the movie.....i loved the book faramir, he is great...but again i can understand why that had to be done......

if i could separte the two...and just watch the movies as movies and not as interpretations of the books then id be fine...but having read the books so much and being such big fans of people like faramir, the hobbits, glorfindel which were either totally messed up of cut out completely thenit tends to stop me enjoying the films so much.....

I completely agree with Sonkem! I totally did not expect the movie to be so far from the book, so that hit me hard when I went to the LOTR-marathon in the cinema.. (okay it was quite exhausting, sitting there for 6 hours or more, so by the end of TTT I was almost asleep)..

The elves at Helms Deep was to me the worst thing, because he invented it totally. I mean, the Ents and Faramir were there, and what he did was exaggerate some of their attributes, but the Elves at Helms Deep, no..

Has anyone read this book? The Atlas of Middle-Earth. It's really nice if you want to have ideas of how Arda looked like!

LotR rocks, i absolutely love the movies. They have done a great job, i might say even better than Harry Potter movie. LotR seems to put more effort into the movie than HP did.
