movie reviews and recommendations

Postby Athena Appleton » Thursday 18 March 2004 9:39:36pm

I thought it might be fun to start a movie review thread... see, the thing is, I get to go see a movie in the theater about twice a year, and it's my turn to pick what we'll get to go see on Saturday night for a date, since we actually have a babysitter (three cheers for mom!) and money (three cheers for the IRS!!! no... wait...), and I have no idea the movies that are out there and are really good... SO!

I only have recommendations for rentals, but still...

1. Dickie Roberts, rated PG (I think, it could be PG-13)
If you ever watched Nick-at-Nite or TVLand, this movie will be even funnier... however, even without getting the old child-star jokes, the movie is hilarious... It's on my I-need-to-buy list.

2. Schindler's List, rated R
It's an awesome movies, with a few drawbacks. It is in black-and-white (which is a huge turnoff for folks like my husband), it has graphic but realistic Holocaust scenes, and some nudity that doesn't really need to be there... but it's still a good movie. I'm a history buff, so I'm fascinated by the film.

3. Sliding Doors, rated PG-13 (once again, I think)
This is one my husband rented and made me watch, and after I got over the fact that the plotline is so dang confusing, it was a really good movie, starring Gwyneth Paltrow (sp?).

4. Joe Dirt, rated PG (I think)
Yup, another David Spade movie (I'm a big David Spade fan). At first glance, it looks TOTALLY stupid, but we got quite a few cheap laughs out of the deal. We had to see it, because my sister the hairdresser keeps making fun of my son when his hair is long, calling him Joe Dirt.

5. Freaky Friday
One word sums this movie up: hahahahaha!!! Jamie Lee Curtis is absolutely hilarious, and the movie has a great feel to it, you wouldn't even realize it was a remake.

6. Uptown Girls
Even my husband liked this one. Brittany Murphy's cool and all, but Dakota Fanning really does an awesome job as a completely neurotic eight-year-old. It's a weird movie, because what you think it will be in the beginning turns out to be completely different than what actually happens.

It's a wonderful movie! I cried!

The films that I watched and loved are:

La vita e bella - really great movie. It's about the second world war too. Really touching and funny in some parts too ( I know that sounds weird, but you'll see). I really recomend it - it's on rental too

Fight club - rental too. I really love this movie, although I know it's brutal and all but dward norton was really fantasctic here.

Lost in translation - I haven't watched it, but my mum has and she was thrilled. She sais the film is wonderful, funny and sentimental. A really original story and that Bill Murray was great. I belive here. It's in cinemas here in Croatia but it's probably allready in rental where ever you are.

Sorry for not being helpfull :(

Yeah, Lost in Translation is great! It should also still be on in the cinemas. Shame it only got one oscar though. :( As I haven't been to the cinema since LotR III, I can't really recommend anything else.

one movie i really like is Trainspotting

The story is quite shocking (it's about some heroin junkies in the UK), but the way the movie is made is just superb! Some scenes are absolutely brilliant! I don't think you can even look at it like a movie...it's more like art...oh and you gotta love the soundtrack (Underworld - Born Slippy  )

i really recommend this movie, but i think it's rated 16+ so if your easily shocked, maybe you shouldn't watch this

Noooooooooooooo! I found it was rubbish! I even forgot I saw it  It is such a strange and boring film, but well, I'm very critical when it comes to films.

I don't know how helpful my post is going to be, since i'm in australia and it's so far away from everywhere else that we get movies way later than most other places (i know that's not the real reason :P)

But anyway, i'll list currently screening movies that i have seen (cos i go to the movies a lot):

Hidalgo: - saw this one last weekend. it was okay, we laughed a bit at the ending, and my sisters & mother made so much fun of it. Not sure if i would reccommend it. Maybe alright if you don't mind occasional cheese overloads.

Mona Lisa Smile: - saw this one on the hottest weekend in Brisbane's history. was only at the cinema for the airconditioning. I didn't really like this movie. it seemed to be just an excuse for julia roberts to take up the screen with her huge face (i don't mean she has a huge face, i mean there are a lot of close-ups).

Once upon a time in mexico city: - I really liked this movie. Partly because i love Johnny Depp and partly because it was a genuinely good movie. I love it when Johnny goes "are you a mexi-can, or a mexi-can't"

The Passion of the Christ: - Very violent, but a decent portrayal of Christ's last hours. Don't see it if you can't handle gore. Could have been a closer study of the symbolism, but i guess you work for hollywood if you want the big bucks.

Girl with a pearl earring: - i liked this one. quite dark and edgy. I was an art student so I liked the focus on the artwork and colour. I like Cillian Murphy too, so that's another plus. I also appreciated the fact that Griet & Vermeer don't have a full-on affair, but it's what is unsaid that really makes it an amazing movie.

Lost in Translation: - Loved this movie. I loved the serendipitous (word?) situations that Charlotte & Bob end up in. I like their unspoken & unacted-upon attraction (in that it is similar to girl with a pearl earring). Really nice movie. Extremely unpretentious.

Under the tuscan sun: - this is a good 'girl night out' movie. It's not very deep, you don't really have to think about anything because it's all laid out for you. I liked the scenery and the side characters. Some parts were a bit corny, but it could have been far, far worse. Ending was a bit too neat though.

The Missing: - This is a good movie in that it has strayed from the norm. It's not a typical Western, or a typical thriller... not a typical anything. It is thrilling though, and exciting. I definitely reccomend it.

I guess that's it for now! Old movies I have enjoyed are 28 days later, spirited away, crouching tiger, princess bride, Amelie, fifth element, trainspotting, ring (japanese version), pirates of the caribbean, the LOTR trilogy....

Man, I need to get out more! Lord of the Rings is taking over my life; I haven't seen hardley any of these films! :-(
Here's a few of my favorites:
- LotR, of course! A fave films list wouldn't be complete without it!
- I recently rented Robin Hood- Prince of Thieves. As a whole movie it was ok (worth seeing, but nothing amazing), but Alan Rickman was brilliant!!!
- Pirates ot Carribean. I'm sure most or all of you have seen it, but I still must list it b/c it's awesome! Orli... Johnny... pirates... gold... yo ho!
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Hilarious!!! Love the Knights of Ni. A must-see!
- Airplane! It's bad, but I can't tear myself away from it! Don't rent it; wait for Comedy Central to show it. "Surely you can't be serious!" "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley."
