Narnia

Postby Nightcrawler » Wednesday 23 November 2005 4:58:26am

(Warning: this thread may eventually contain spoilers for the Narnia books)

By now I'm sure quite a few of you have seen the trailer for the upcoming film The Chronicles of Narnia: the Loin the Witch and the Wardrobe. I think it looks great and I can't wait to see it. It might even be better than the Goblet of Fire. The books are pretty good, and if this one does well, I'd like to see adaptations of a few of the others.

Is anyone else excited about this film?

Not really. The books were really boring (amazingly, I got through the whole series) and the previous movies were almost as bad as the books. I know a lot of people like these books, but they are just not my style.

I read the entire Narnia series last year. I didn't love it, but I read it because I had nothing else to read. I wasn't disappointed. But I wasn't overwhelmed or anyhting. I think I've read too much fantasy to be amazed by it really... I found it a little boring.

The movie effects look fantastic though, and I think it'll do really well. It was made in New Zealand, and directed by a Kiwi as well, (Andrew Adamson-Dtr. of Shrek) and I must say it does look amazing in the trailer. I am still wondering whether I'll go and see it or not, and at this stage I think I will if I have the money...

I've heard they will also be making "Prince Caspian" as well, next. Personally I think they should see how this one goes first.

I'm thinking the movie might be better than the book. I mean, the trailer makes it look really fascinating.

Yeah I agree...the books were boring, but the trailer does look fantastic, and it's made in NZ so I might as well go see it, and King Kong too...and HP 4, wow the movie theatre will love me...3 movies to go see...

I don't think I'll even bother going and seeing King Kong. I might, if it does well, but honestly, I don't think I'll like it just because it's Peter Jackson and filmed in New Zealand.
We'll see.

Kong is going to be truly awesome!

I enjoyed most of the Narnia books. They were very different to Harry Potter, but I enjoyed them for what they were. One of the appeals of Harry Potter is that they are about growing up. They start out with Harry as a child and end with him as an adult. The narative grows darker and more intense to reflect this.

Narnia on the other hand, is pretty much aimed at children, hence why some older audiences might find them to be boring. I guess I'm just a child at heart

I didn't like "The Final Battle" though. It was waaaaay too preachy (and meanspirited) for my tastes.

How did it end again? The last few chapters were a blur as I was trying to finish it as quickly as possible so I could move on to a new book. Come to think of it, the last thing I can remember form the series was the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, though I know I read all of them. Not very memorable to me, I suppose...

The Last Battle was the one with the donkey and the ape.

As for the ending.... (spoilers approaching) everyone died. That's right, the kids that you spent six books growing to love were killed and went to heavan. Except for Susan, she became interested in boys and therefore didn't deserve to get into heavan. :-? Narnia was destroyed, but all the people who followed Aslan got to go to a "better Narnia", which I think is pretty lame. The last few pages just went on and on about how awesome heavan is.

The problem was that C.S. Lwis wrote the books to encourage children to delve into Christianity. It was far to much like the bible.

It's just, the heros were always perfect. They never coped with real teenage issues, which makes HP more interesting than CN.

The battle is probably going to look like your typical 15th century England King vs. sorcerer battle.

The thing about CS Lewis, is that he wrote the Narnia books a long time ago. He was best friends with Tolkien and encouraged Tolkien to write Lord of the Rings so any LOTR fans out there owe him your allegiance! :P

But more importantly, you have to recognise that social circumstances change over the years and demands increase for excitement. In an age when there had been World Wars, any margin of fantasy was welcomed by kids as there wasn't much adventure or fantasy books available at the time. Today is a different story.

When I was a kid, I liked the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe the best out of the Narnia books. The rest of them didn't have the same feel and I was disappointed with them.

I think the film will be good although it has already been dubbed the Mini Rings even though the LWW came first.

Interesting fact about CS Lewis:
He died the same day that JFK was shot in 1963 and no-one even noticed!
I think that's really tragic as in his day I'm sure he was really rated as an author.
