Obviously the acne faced computer geeks spreading virusses target Windows most of the time since it's by far the most used OS. That doesn't mean it's less secure than linux.

The rest of the message relates to the now famous Lovsan or Blaster
virus
and is directed at users of WindowsNT, Windows2000 and WindowsXP only.
Users of Windows98 and WindowsME and all non-Windows systems (such as
Macs) can ignore the remainder of the message.
This is a follow up to the message of 12 August in which we advised all
users of the affected versions of Windows to install a Microsoft
security
patch.
Further experience both here and elsewhere has revealed problems with
the
Microsoft security patch which we recommended in Tuesday's message. New
versions of the virus have appeared, and doubts have been expressed
about
the value of the securithy patch on its own.
To make things more certain we suggest that you download and run a
small
program which will tell you whether it has detected a Lovsan infection,
and also whether it has found the security patch correctly installed.
Please see http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/lis/help/virus/lovsan.html
for more information, and contact the Helpdesk if you need more advice.
The web page advises you to install all the available Windows "critical
updates" for your system, and this can be a long process. We
appreciate
that not all users will be able to carry out the the recommended
procedures before the weekend, particularly as the Microsoft Website is
likely to be stretched. If the detection tool reports that you do
not have the patch installed and you do not have time to install the
critical updates as suggested you must not turn on your computer over
the
weekend. It is in any case advisable to switch off your computer when
it
is left overnight, but if you have not installed the critical updates
this
precaution is essential. This is because the virus is expected to
become
active on 16 August.
