Major Complaint...everyone please read

Postby Scellanis » Friday 20 June 2003 1:34:28pm

What on eh was the point of making special book 5 forums to stop people who dont wanna read spoilers from doing so if you are gonna call the threads in those forums stuff like

So and so dies

could you please stop doing that....the thread should have been title something like

The Death maybe

I could have sworn (and could be mistaken!) there was indeed a thread, started smartly by Han Lin, about this very issue--the naming of threads. I remember posting somewhere else that the feature I'm assuming a lot of us use--where you click on the forum page to see all the new posts since you last logged in--would be a danger to people should thread NAMES be spoilers themselves! :o Granted, someone may say, they just shouldn't log onto the forum while reading, but then again, why would Paul have made new sections and devised rules and such, if he didn't want to give people the freedom to log on to the forum, should they choose to do so? :???:

Sonkem has a real point. If I see OotP threads on my list of 'new posts I've not read since my last time on the Forum', I can simply not click on them (that's just plain common sense we can all use), but if they have 'give-away' titles that say things that'll spoil me, I'll be spoiled, and I won't be pleased. That's not good at all, but it's a *much* bigger deal for those of us from Germany not getting the book until November 2003 (possibly) and other people who, for whatever the reason, won't be getting the book right away or may take their time, for again whatever the reason, reading the book. :(

I wholeheartedly agree, Sonkem . . . it's all a matter of thinking about what to call a thread . . . if you say "So and So Dies" in the thread name, well, none of us have to *read* the thread to have been thus spoiled! And, as I wrote on another thread, everyone has different circumstances, styles, and preferences as to how they'll read this book and on what time table, and how they may or may not want to come on the forum while reading the book. Even if you personally will not be on the forum at all while reading or you personally may not take a while to read the book, what does that matter if that's someone else's scenario for whatever the reason? Some people can't help their circumstances! They don't deserve to be spoiled just because their situation is different, by necessity or choice. :-?

I'm really not irate, but like Sonkem, quite passionate on this issue as well as quite passionate about people respecting that not everyone is going to do the same thing with this book as everyone else . . . there is no correct way or correct timing to read the book, but no one deserves to be spoiled. Please be careful in the future and I sincerely hope you enjoy the book however and whenever you choose to read it.

But it was too late

But I sorta blamed myself - Im like - maaan, it did say spoiler-part of the forum, so I shouldn't have gone there.
But But it was sooo..........clean in there for a while...... :(

Oh well.

Can you believe it? with only couple of hours to go I spoilled it for myself.

I'm going to be really mad if I have been spoiled by the name of a thread. If the thread that Sonkem saw about the death in book 5 is the same thread Mint saw and it's true, I'm *really* going to be steamed!

Don't get me wrong...all along, I've read some rumours, but I never wanted to be spoiled on anything big! :x This really sucks. I feel like it isn't safe here, and that's truly aggrevating. Who dies in the fifth book is a *huge* plot point, and to think I've been spoiled (as well as others!) is just disappointing. Please, everyone, *think* about the title of a thread for the book 5 sections before you post it!!! All I did was read a thread title as it came up in my 'posts unread since last visit', and I think it's spoiled me!

Well, the thing is, that thread doesn't even really have a spoiler. It was just a . . . whaddya call it- a joke. The author of the thread doesn't even know what s/he's talking about. I agree with you guys on this, though

Well, thank gosh! Maybe I haven't been spoiled after all! I really hope you're right, Hermione...you are referring to the thread that 'spoiled' the death, right? Note, I'm being REALLY careful not to name the name...I don't want anyone to be as irate as I've been!

I hope you're right, Hermione, and that thread was just a joke or a prediction and not truth. It would make me feel MUCH better, not only to know I am NOT spoiled, but as well, that maybe the person mentioned on that thread is NOT the one who dies. This may be the best news I've gotten all day...I never read the thread personally, so I have no idea what it said, so thanks Hermione.

I hope you are right!

I haaaate being spoiled. And with so many books out in the streets - its just soo easy to ruin everyone's day!

Well, no matter what - I am NOT going to that part of the forum before I read the book.

How do you know for sure it was just a joke? Lately Im so paranoid with this "spoilers" :eekie: *Mint's eye starts twiching*

The Dragon Master - spoil all you want, just make sure that its in the BOOK 5 restriction section, and it has huuuuuuge SPOILER word in the topic  and that topic doesn't spoil it itself.

WORD to that. Wouldn't it be ridiculous if the thread title had the huge word 'spoiler' in it, yet still gave away spoilery-type information??

Once I've read the book, the new sections will be awesome! I also look forward to seeing who the mods will be for those sections as well. :D

Hmmmmmmm.....what about all these new members we are getting? Will they be aware of the rules regarding titling threads and staying in the right sections? :-? :o

This (the forum) is, sadly, probably not the place to be after midnight GMT!! Unless, Paul, you see a viable solution... :???:

I've just added some very large guidelines at the top of the forum which I hope will help new members and existing folks alike. I very nearly banned a certain someone tonight before reading that the post in question was an non-serious post and not at all fact-based.

After midnight, provided the guidelines are followed, anyone is welcome to post about book 5 in the Order of the Phoenix sections (but no facts about the book shoud be posted before then). I (and I'm sure the moderators of all the forums) will be checking the other areas carefully to try to ensure nothing gets through. Unfortunately nothing is infallible but every effort will be made to stop spoilers from accidentally (or otherwise) ruining the enjoyment of the fine members of this board.

The Death maybe

But we already know there is going to be a death, Rowling even talked about how she cried after writing it.
