In book 1, at the bit with the giant chess set, was Rowling just being careless or dose'nt she know how 2 set out a chess board?Ron says, 'Harry you can be a bishop, and Hermione you go next 2 him instead of that castle.' Knights are next 2 castles in chess, not bishops, was she just being careless?

She probably didn't really mean exactly right next to him, just in the general area...i wouldn't lose sleep over it, really...she probably made a mistake, and because she's human we'll get over it, right? Ok, ok!

She probably picked the pieces depending on the moves that they can make. I think she knows where the pieces lie on the chess board, but it just would have sounded clumsy saying "you go to the rook two spaces next to Harry". They have all played wizard chess and know the pieces. Ron just meant they should be on the same side of the board.

That's what I call being pernickety.
Come on, if you start to call into question every little detail which isn't perfectly clear for you, you'll never stop.
Remember that it's "only" a book, sometimes people can understand by themselves without being told everything.
