'Goblet of Fire' query...

Postby 2F2Type_R » Monday 16 December 2002 7:34:12pm

First of all, sincerest apologies if this has been brought up before; I guess my lame excuse would be ... i'm new , nothing came up in the forum 'Search' engine.

Harry to Dumbledore: "(Voldemort) could touch me without hurting himself"... For a fleeting instant, Harry thought he saw a gleam of something like triumph in Dumbledore's eyes.

An excerpt from the Goblet of Fire. Could someone enlighten me on what this could mean? Or better yet, tell to me how there is nothing unusual about Harry's observations. I'd hate to finish part four with this edginess constantly kicking at me.

Btw, does anyone find Voldemort's explanation to how Harry overcame him as a baby (Lily Potter using 'Old Magic'... 'sacrificing' herself) a bit too shallow? Not really what I had anticipated from Rowling, she usually write's so good...

See the thing is almost everyone else is confused by this as well. But in no slight way do I believe Dumbledore is evil or corrupt. There are things he says to Harry, things he talks about and teaches, that someone who was on the Dark Side could ever understand.

I believe it must have something to do with the past or something we don't know about--and I don't wonder because I get the hunch all will be revealed.

I not worried. :D

I agree with Luna...I'm sure all this will revealed in book numero cinq (#5)...if not then 6 or 7. I'm just going to put my faith in JKR, and hopefully not be disappointed.
Now, about that whole "old magic" thing...I have to admit that's a bit cliched, but it's true. Voldemort can't understand things like love because he's such a bitter..."person."

But ya' know...just whatever...

Well, this is definitely one of the hot topics in most Harry Potter chatrooms/forums...and the short answer is that no one knows. I'm not all that familiar with the various theories, but I'm thinking that Dumbledore had a "gleam of triumph" because Voldemort just set himself up for his own undoing. Now, I'm not entirely sure how having Harry's blood in him could end up being his undoing, but...

Well, think of it like this. It seems like Voldemort has a habit of overlooking the obvious...i.e., Lily's blood sacrifice for Harry's life. "That is ancient magic, and I should've remembered it" he says, or something similar. Perhaps this is similar, and Dumbledore knows it? Just a thought.

Cheers,

Don't worry, found my answer. I guess I misinterpreted what Rowling was trying to say.

The key to all this kind of lies in the word "triumph". Dumbledore knew Voldemort too well, as he pointed out to Harry (in the Philosopher's Stone) of the futileness in hoping He-Who-Must-Not-Named would die, "there are ways in which he can return". Regardless of how we feel about Voldemort, he is in fact near-immortal... he can't be killed (on top of becoming a fully immortal half-life after drinking Unicorn blood). And as CloakedShadow kindly pointed out, Voldemort can't understand love... as well as being repelled by the 'Love' imbued into Harry from his mother, receiving damage everytime he touched Harry. Dumbledore's smile of "triumph" in the 'Goblet of Fire' was due to the fact though the blood made Voldemort a mortal being; hence the ability to touch Harry, had also compromised his perverted immortality, allowing himself to be slain... Dumbledore knew this.

And to think that I suspected Dumbledore of being in the same league as Voldemort. Can you imagine the uproar among Harry Potter fans around the world if this were true?! Oh and by the way, a 9 year old kid had a hand in helping me undestand all this if you can believe that. Damn satisfying to finally understand it all, though I'm two minds about having to endure that cocky little kid's mocking and ridicule, as well as his unkindly comments concerning my limited intelligence, just to get it.

So yeah, you got it right Lupin. Harry's blood becomes Voldemort's undoing  .

yes but u have to wonder whether now volde has harry's blood whether they rnt linked so much that perhaps harry is the key to volde's death...in other words...could it now be possible that harry must die to kill voldemort because they share blood in which case harry would have to either kill himself or be killed in book 7 for voldemort to die

(its a theory circulating round several forums at the moment)
