Helga brushed her hand against the girl's skin as she moved to cover her with some blankets. Her hands returned and rested there, and then she hung her head in defeat. "Marpessa, this girl is dead, it seems whatever injured her, it has poisoned her fatally..." She said solemnly. She looked back up at the child's face, which looked bruised and veiny. Her skin was so pale anyway, and her hair dark and long. She was going to be a proper witch. Free of the persecution that faced her as her magical powers became more evident in the Muggle world she came from. She was supposed to be safe here, at Hogwarts.

"We have failed to protect her." Helga sobbed. She covered the small body with the blanket and buried her face in her hands. "We cannot even stay safe within our own walls. What has begun here? What have we done?"

"Oh no," Marpessa murmured to herself, not knowing if Helga heard her, but not really caring, "Oh no no no no no. I can't believe-- Well, I suppose there wasn't anything to be done-- But maybe if we'd gotten there sooner--" Marpessa hung her head in defeat, and stood up from where she'd been leaning over the now-dead girl. "I'll... go and tell Professors Ravenclaw and Gryffindor." She walked quickly from the room.

Helga barely noticed Marpessa leaving the room, she was so distraught. She put her hand to her mouth, and then pulled back the sheets once more to look at the child's wound. The marks were undeniably a bite. Helga looked closer, and saw that they were fangs.
"A snake?" she muttered. Then her eyes widened. It was impossible. Helga thought about the Basalisk that Seprente had been holding.
"It's only an infant, that snake. " she reminded herself. A bite from a Baslisk would not harm you like this. Something else was in the mix. Helga gathered some eqipment together and proceeded to take some of the girls blood. She removed a small vial and then she went over to a bench and poured it into a bowl. She took out her wand and muttered a spell, which showed Professor Hufflepuff the contents of the child's blood.
All the right elements were there, and there was poison. "Ah yes.." Helga flicked her wand and seperated the substance she found. There was not much left; Whatever it was had been soaked into the girl's system. Helga sat down and rubbed her eyes with one hand, waiting for her collegues to give her some idea of what might be happening.
