William could hear Sam’s voice, but it was distant and vague. He didn’t have time to think about what it was saying he had to stop this creature and let it’s true mind control as long as he could.

William fell to the ground as his merciless opponent kicked him in the gut. William had never had a chance. This thing was to strong. William had never fought in his life he had always used his power… wait his power. If what the thing said was true this was a mind which meant that in theory William could use his power.

He looked up to see the creature smiling at him. It had stopped just for a moment to mock him. “So this is the great telepath? The one we have been taught to fear because he can force us away. This is all you can do? Push me back here and cower as I beet you. Let me go back and all will stop. Let me go back and I will kill you the right way.”

“Never.” William raised his hand toward the thing and suddenly a high pitch note reverberated around them. It was something resembling nails being scraped down a chalkboard but ten times worse. William only heard it as a faint screech but he could tell by the way the creature cringed that it was casing him terrible agony. The sound seemed to be reverberating from every where not having a common source but simply filling every area and rippling throughout the mind. William stood up and watched as the creature fell to hi knees screaming, but his scream was lost in the omnipresent force of the terrible screech.

William smiled this was going to be fun!

[I'd been intending to tell as to how he found them, but you guys post way too much for me to keep up.]

Appearing through a light, Raijin landed next to the group. He swore. He'd been too slow, and they'd already found it and the place was an absolute mess. Not bothering to kneel down next to the others, he asked, "Did you see any others?" He kept his eye on the entrance and probed for any electricity sources that were out of the ordinary.

Sam had hardly taken notice of him as she responded, "No."

"Figures," Raijin thought to himself. Stepping through the wreckage, he went out into the street. He could already hear police sirens wailing as they zoomed towards the shop. Swearing, Raijin looked back at the others. That William person didn't seem to be in any shape to go anywhere. Looking back towards the cops, Raijin decided he'd have to stall them.

He wouldn't get the chance. In but a split-second, a shadow descended from one of the roof-tops, travelling faster than the eye could track. Landing on the police cruiser, the creature smashed through the roof, flattening the vehicle. Raijin lifted up his arm to shield his face as metal and glass shards were catapulted his way. The stuck in, causing a painful stinging sensation in his arms as blood began to flow from them.

Letting down his arms, Raijin barely had time to react as the monster bounded towards him at blinding speed, its blood-covered face snarling with savagery.

"No!" Samantha screamed as she stepped outside the shop door into the daylight. She had followed Raijin out only to find that he was under attack. Her first instinct sent the creature flying backwards with such force that he crouched into a ball and landed hard against the pavement abot 10 feet away. She ran, toward Raijin who was not running toward the creature, and then in Sam's perifial vision she saw three other shadowy figures ascending from the rooftops around them. They landed as if something was lowering them down with a string. Samantha closed her eyes and reached out with her senses. She turned her head to the north and opened her eyes, looking up on the rooftop. There, above them all, was a cloaked figure with his hands outstretched, puppeting the creatures from the rooftops to the ground like he was playing some sort of battle game; Sam and Raijin versus the creatures. Samantha decided if she took that person down, the creatures would be easier to deal with. And she would get more answers than from him than from an incoherent vessel like the creature in the shop. She hoped William would wake up soon, it would be good to make this three instead of two. Samantha ran toward the building the puppeter stood atop with extra speed using her power to manipulate the gravity around her.

Now that William was not being beaten by the monster he could feel and hear the thoughts of the outside world once more. He knew the trouble that Sam and Raijin were in and he decided that he needed to do something to help. Looking over at the monster writhing in agony in front of him William made up his mind about what to do, but he would need to act quickly. William pulled out of the thing mind as suddenly as he had been sucked in, and, without even stirring in his reanimated body, he took control of the creature’s mind. As the mind took back control over the poor person it spread like blood in water filling every available space of mind.

The monster stood up before William did and walked out to confront the others as William rose to follow. William watched through the eyes of the creature while he walked along behind it, his stick tapping around methodically. Raijin was blasting at a constantly dogging creature as several others chased Sam while she ran for a man standing on the rough of a building.

William, now fully understanding the power of creature he was controlling, ordered the thing to take out some of the monsters chasing Sam. It pounced. It was no faster than the other ones but for some reason caught up to one of them before it reached Sam and started pounding it. The creatures trailing Sam, realizing what William had done, suddenly turned and swarmed on the monster William had control over. William was shocked that it took such a short time for them to kill the thing and was even more surprised when one of them turned on him.

William, now completely blind, had to think fast. He remembered what he had done when he was unconscious in the mind of the dead creature and wondered if it would work here. Concentrating with all his might he tried and was surprised when several things happened at once. Raijin and Sam both screamed along with two policemen all the monsters and the man on top of the building. William could feel that for the second when he had cause the screech to reverberate through everyone’s mind that the things had been temporarily separated from the network of minds. With this opportunity William slipped into one of their minds and took control again.

As William had the creature attack another one he thought to himself “That was neat. I wonder if I can focus it so it only affects one mind. Don’t think about that now you’re in the first real battle of your life.” William refocused and made sure the monster was still in his complete control as it pounded another monster.

The vertigo that followed was almost too much for Samantha to take. Then she heard in her mind the invasion of another mind, and recognise the voice. She turned to see William standing vulnerably amidst the attack, but he was walking closely behind one of the monsters who he seemed to be controlling. Sam arched a smile.

"Neat." she observed, and turned to run to her destination. The man from the rooftop was still controlling the monsters, distracted by the attack William was sending toward them. Sam got to the windowsills on the first level and bounced from pane to pane, gripping quickly and climbing fast. She reached the man, and standing there on the rooftop she faced him. He ignored her for the moment, still contrlling the monsters.

"Hey you!" she yelled, annoyed by his indifference. He put his hand out and pushed out, knocking her back 10 feet across the rooftop. Sam smacked her head into the far ledge and the headache that followed nearly caused her to loose conciousness. She looked through blurred eyes at the man still managing the army of monsters with his mind. A telepath AND a pusher.

"No fair." she said, and reached her hands out, pushing at him from the distance. He simply put his hand up and blocked her. She paused for the moment, knowing that if he wasn't so distracted, he would probably have knocked her off the building by now. She made a mental note to think things through before running into an adventure like this again.

William was pleased with how well his monster was doing it had taken one out but the last one had just killed his. William focusing on limiting his mental blast to one mind tried it and was glad when the oncoming monster, whom he quickly took control of, was the only one to scream. Now that he had his last monster under control he sent it up to the building where the man on the rough top, having no more monsters to control, had fully turned his attention to Sam.

Sam moved fast around the rooftop, searching for a way out. She dared not go back the way she came as her mind was not clear enough to control the gravity to hold her up. It was easier to push, and from this height, pulling herself back would not be easy. She found a door and shook at the doorknob, but just as she was stepping back to focus on smashing it through, she was lifted off the ground. She felt the push wrap itself around her middle as if a great hand was holding her there. She was turned around mid air and before her stood her attacker with his arm extended.

He was taller than her, and cloaked, his skin was dark, as was his hair. He pushed back the hood that conceiled his face and looked up at her, forming his hand as she felt the same movements around her ribs. She yelled out. His eyes were a fierce green, his hair was wild and black and his face was calm and content.

"Who are you?" he asked, and he clenched his fist. Sam screamed, her ribs crushing into themselves. She went limp as he released. The pain was almost unbarable. The man's face remained calm, but gave a hint of annoyance. He clenched his fist again. Sam extended her body, feeling her bones crushing.

"Ahhh!!!" she cried out, and he released again. She breathed deeply, trying to find air behind the crushing of her chest. He would soon press her ribcage into her lungs. She lifted her head and scowled at him. "scr*w you." she spat.

The man blinked and went to crush her again, but then waved his hand and brought it to his side where he slipped it into his pocket. Sam fell fast to the concrete, and a loud crack sent her reeling. She squrimed around, clutching at her shoulder. The man moved fast toward her and was upon her before she could crawl away. He put one foot directly on her shoulder now, not bothering to use his power. He stared down at Sam, who's head had lulled to the side, the pain from her injury impossible to endure.

"Try. " was all he said. He tilted his head. "Try to fix it. Your shoulder.. I've dislocated it."

"No kidding!!!" Sam yelled through tears, a sob tore from her throat. "...fix it? ...it's ... impossible..."

"Is it?" the man said softly. He took his foot off of Sam's shoulder and crouched down. Sam rolled to one side, groaning. "You are a pusher, are you not?"

Sam was feeling nausious. "I... don't know what you mean." she lied. The man stood up, looking disappointed.

"Move it back." he said, as if it was as simple as taking a breath. Sam sobbed again, annoyed now by the game.

"What are you going to do with me?" she whimpered. He bent down and tried to move Sam's hair out of her sweaty face. She swung her arm to keep him away. He reached out to her shoulder with one hand, suspending it, and Sam's face contorted into a shocked expression as she felt her shoulder slip back into the socket. She felt instantly better, but he didn't let her gather her thoughts. She was already being wrentched up by her hair , and he had her by the throat.

"I would love to teach you more.." the man said affectionately into her ear. "Bout our little lesson will have to continue another day. We have company." he slid a long blade up to her throat, and turned them both around to meet who was approaching.

William felt the fear pulsing from Sam's mind. He wanted to do something but he could think of nothing. his monster had been killed by him almost without him thinking about it. William knew he would need to use his power on him directly but he was very tired now.

William could feel another presence on the roof. it was a more formidable opponent than the pusher it mind more powerful and frightening.

"You needn't have come, it is not safe for you here." the cloaked man addressed another man some distance away on the rooftop. Sam could see the only entrance to the roof, and the door had not opened. Where had he come from?

"There have been too many fatalities today, a clean up is in order." the man spoke deeply, penetrating the air with more than just his words. Sam cringed, instantly fearful of it. The knife remained at her throat, and the man, with his own cloak as a shroud, lifted his chin only slightly to reveal that his skin was cacasian and smooth almost like a young child, but that was all Sam could see. The height of him told her otherwise, but Sam could not help but stare, wondering if this person were not possible femaile. Whoever it was hid themselves perfectly, using a kind of combination voice and only minimal movements.

"What shall I do with this one?" the knife pushed into Sam's throat, and she felt the sharpness pierce her skin, sending a warm trickle of blood down her neck. She whimpered, not wanting to die, and hoping that he wouldn't kill her, that it was all just an act. She was observed silently. Then, the guest approached her and stood in front of her. He reached out his hand; a gloved hand, of course, smooth leather gloves that went all the way up his elbows. The mouth formed into a small smile.

"You fear me. Good." The mouth did not move. Sam straightened up, feeling the invasion into her mind.

"No..." she sputtered, her eyes streaming with tears. But he continued relentlessly. She felt stripped bare, asaulted and all that she held within her was scattered and touched. By the end of it, she went limp in the arms of the man with the knife, who heaved her up, keeping her captive still. The voice in her head echoed.

"So much junk in here. So many things to hang onto. What a waste of space. Really." Sam felt so lost she could not find her own thoughts anymore, so she tried one more time to reach out to William. She lifted her head, stared at the man and opened her mouth to speak.

"William." she whispered. And when she had pulled herself out of the stuper enough to remember him, she moved fast, surprising the man with the knife, stepping forward and pushing at the telepath with all her strength. She imagined this was the only time she would surprise him, so she put everything she had into it, and it worked. He flew back, smashing into the bricks near the roof edge. At the same moment she ran, pushing out at the door, smashing it, and flew down the stairs into the dark building, hoping like hell that she would find a way out faster than they could catch up to her.

William was at loss of what to do standing there amazed that there was a telepath walking along the roof above him. The telepath had a perfect shield around their mind. a wall of impenetrability. William could still feel Sam's mind, which broke within seconds. Once the telepath had intruded into Sam's mind the wall of protection surrounded her mind too. Then William heard something. It was small and he could only just hear it in his own mind. It was Sam calling his name. William had to see what was happening. He quickly found a cowering old man in one of the building and had him run across to the window and look down on the scene that lay before him. All that William and the old man had time to see was Sam fleeing across the roof and down a set of stairs.

Quickly retreating from the old man's mind William enveloped Sam’s mind. Not taking control but protecting it from the telepath who had just started to attack Sam. William quickly notified Sam that he was present but had time for no more as the telepath launched his first attack. The pain was excruciating and it was all William could do to hold on. It was as if a hundred hot knifes had been driven into William's skull. William prepared himself again but instead of waiting he mentally through himself at the telepath on the roof. William was tired and he hoped that the telepath would soon leave but until then William was in for the fight of his life.

Sam threw herself down the stairs a flight at a time, her power to push back practically smashing the concrete steps. She was breathing fast, her mind racing now, her hair wet with perspiration. She finally stopped in front of an exit door. Yanking it open she found it was the basement carpark. She stepped out into the cold space. There were cars everywhere, it must be a long term parking facility. Her shoes echoed on the pavement. Her breathing seemed loud. She held her breath, listened, and then looked around for an office or a box where the keys would be stored. Seeing a large metal box on the far wall, she exhaled and ran toward it.

"Hey!" Someone shouted out. Sam nearly choked and she froze where she stood. Slowly she turned around and faced the slightly overweight security guard. She gawked at him.

"What are you doing here? No one should be in the building today." the guard approached her, reaching for his walkie talky. When he was close enough to see Sam in the light, he stopped. "What happened to you? You're bleeding.." He brought the walkie talkie up to his mouth. "Hey Jamie, there's a woman down here, looks like she's been beat up. Just came out of the building." He let the reciever go and only static returned. He held it down again. "Jamie do you copy?" Static. The man put his walkie talkie back onto his belt and went to remove his gun.

"Don't." Sam reached out her hand to show she meant no harm. He pulled his weapon anyway and fired. A long stream of electricity flew out of the weapon - it was designed to knock her out. Sam saw it all play in slow motion and managed to throw herself to the floor before the stream hit her. Instead the charge bounced off the wall behind her in a shower of sparks. She rolled to the side, stood up, and pushed out at the guard, knocking him off his feet. She waved her hand and allowed the man's head to be knocked just the right way to knock him out. She raced over to check that he was okay and then removed the keys and walkie talkie from his belt. She jogged up the middle of the carpark, rolling the keys in her hand and trying to find a car to use. But then she was compelled to simply leave the garage, so she turned to her left and pushed through an emergency exit. There, on the street was William, down on one knee, his hands on his head.

"William!" she screamed, and ran to him. From the rooftop above, Sam could hear a sickening crack, and she turned to look in time to see the whole edge of the top of the building crumble and fall down toward them. She reached out, slowing it's asent until it hung suspended in mid air. Then she flung her hands to the right, tossing the stones to the ground several meters away from her and William. The crash shook the ground, and William fell over. Sam moved to assist. She wrapped her arms around him and then tilted her head up to the rooftop again. The dust was clearing, and the Pusher stood, small and still, on the edge of what was left of the rooftop. He stepped out and dropped, landing like a cat on the ground in front of them. Sam swallowed hard and layed William down flat. She stood up and held her hands out, ready to fight.

The strain on William was great he barley took notice of Sam as she ran out toward him. He was aware of the pusher on the rough only as a side note. The telepath was putting great strain on him. He was still trying to invade Sam’s mind even if she had no idea but it was slowly causing William to lose grip with reality. Then in a sudden flash William fainted.

It was a strange sensation. He knew he was unconscious but he was still aware of what was going on. He watched Sam fighting the pusher. William suddenly realized that his incredible strain and devotion to protecting Sam had caused his mind to stick to Sam’s. William still felt tired and could do no more defending but at least he was awake.

William decided it would be safest to return to his body. He turned his concentration on to accomplishing this feat but found that he could not do it. he thought about this. There were several possibilities. The other telepath could be protecting the body, the body could be rejecting him as a safety measure, or ,the one he liked least, the strain he had applied might have caused him to die in which case there was no body to return to.

Samantha watched her opponent with narrowed eyes. They circled each other, Sam forcing their motions away from William.

"It doesn't have to be like this. You can join us..." the Pusher said in a kind tone. Samantha scowled.

"How about you just let us all go home and we'll forget the whole thing?" her voice sounded stronger than she felt. The man stopped the circling and put his hands on his hips.

"I can't forget you now, Samantha." he said softly. "Dont force me to kill you."

Samantha's heart jumped in her chest. She built up every bit of courage she could muster, and pushed forward, knocking him off balance. He simply flipped backward and landed lightly on his feet.

"So much to learn." he shrugged, and pushed back at her. She forced the motion back at him, and managed to reflect it, standing her ground. He smiled widely. But then his smile disappeared as something seemed to occur to him. He looked up to the rooftop and then back at Samantha.

"Got to go, precious." he said, and he reached out to where William was laying on the ground.

"No!" Sam threw herself in front of the Pusher, and was caught up in his forward pull. Instead of William being dragged to him, Samantha crashed into him and knocked him to the ground. They rolled down the road, Sam keeping a firm hold of him, and finally he flipped them both over and had her pinned beneath him. His breathing laboured, he started to laugh.

"You try so hard!" he scoffed, holding her arms down and pinning her legs with his own. She tried to push him, but he was already forcing her down.

"Get OFF!" Samantha screamed. "HELP!!!"

"No one is going to help you. and if they do, he will have them killed. Now be a good girl, go back to your... lawyer firm, and stay out of this. " The Pusher leaned forward and gave her a kiss on the cheek, to which Sam angrilly shook her head, and then he was gone, moving in one motion toward William, flinging William's body over his shoulder. William groaned from the sudden movement. Sam flipped back up, landing on her feet. But the Pusher fled, bounding up the building, and out of site. Samantha chased him, maneuvering her skill to match his, but when she arrived on the roof; they were all gone.

"William!!!!!" she screamed. "William!!!!!" She searched the rooftop, hoping they had left him. Then she found it. A glass cylinder about a foot long, with a piece of paper inside it. She was shaking as she pulled it out. It read;

'A token for us, so that you mind your own business. Now. Mind the step on your way down.' No signature. Samantha looked toward the exit door and then ran to it, pulling the door open with her hands. The action of the door opening set off a bomb, and the building imploded under her, sending a blast of plaster and wood and brick through the door. But at the same moment there was a small voice in her head, it was Williams voice pleading. "Don't open the door." But she had, and then she knew she had to force herself back, so she pushed at the blast and sent herself flying backwards over the building edge. She was falling, and seeing the building collapse in front of her eyes as she fell to the ground. She stared at the ground now, watching it approach, and then pushed out, allowing herself to hit at the same velocity as if she had dropped from a meter, instead of 500 meters. She still managed to knock her head, and that was it for her. Sam surrendered to her unconcious.

William felt Sam's fatigue and as she lost consciousness he thought of what to do. the fact that his body wasn't there wasn't a problem the problem was that he still couldn't reenter it. he thought a little more and decided that he didn't want to be in the body if it was being held hostage. within a moment William had shut off his body almost completely so that it was in coma like state. meanwhile he thought he should take Sam home. William slipped lightly into Sam's skin and he felt rather odd. the shape of her body was different and walking around was hard but he would need to leave or the police would be asking questions. have knowledge of where Sam's home was he stumbled along the road. it took him a while and he was sure he looked drunk but he finally made it. William liked being able to walk around without the need of another's eyes or a walking stick. he could look where he wanted when he wanted. when he got to her home he slipped into sam's bed without unchanging, because it was not his body to change. he went to sleep and slipped back into sam's subconscious. Sam didn't wake but William didn't expect her to. it had been a long day and she needed a rest. they could talk in the morning. and with that thought William went to sleep, or tried to at least. it turns out you need a body to sleep.

*********************************** (This means new chapter or the next day)

Samantha woke up and could barely move. She leaned on one arm and sat up slightly. She looked around, recognising her bedroom. The dark green paint, the photos of her travels scattered in frames across the walls. Her bed was a mess, but her blankets were on her. she had not even gotten changed out of her clothes. She winced as she noticed the cuts and bruises forming on her arms and legs. Moving slowly, she sat up, swung her legs around and stepped out of bed. She grabbed a towel drapped at the end of her bed and stumbled off to the shower.

The room started to smell like strawberries as Sam lathered up the shower gel. Desperate to recharge, she finished with the hot water and allowed only cold water to run. It helped, a little. Wrapped in her towel, she approached the mirror, and ran one hand across the steamed glass. Staring back at her was a very tired, battered version of herself.

"I can't go to work like this." she voiced. Fishing around her room for her phone, she dialed and attached it to her ear. She looked at the bedside clock and saw it was almost 10am. The other end of the phone received.

"Hi? Ya, it's Sam. Listen, I am really sick. I'm sorry I haven't called, I only just woke up. Ya, I know I'm sorry I haven't been in or called. I think it's food poisoning. Went out for dinner last night at..." she fished for a name and decided not to. "A local chinese. I shouldn't touch that stuff. Sorry, but you're going to have to reshedule the meeting with our client for tomorrow morning. Organise the surveilence, and I will go double check it tomorrow. Okay?" she paused, and the person on the other end spoke in agreeance. Then they disconnected. Sam removed the phone from her ear and sat on the bed, her hair wet around her face.

"What am I going to do?" she said out loud. Two people were missing. She had no idea where Raijin had gone. He was no doubt wise enough to disappear when things go so crazy. But then, who had got her home. Sam looked up suddenly, and her heart rate increased. Great. He's probably sleeping on the couch. Sam stood up and walked slowly over to the door where her robe was hanging on the back. She grabbed it and wrapped herself in it, and then cautiously made her way into the living room.

All was quiet. The couch seemed the same. Still, she had no memory of making her own way home, and that disturbed her. After surveying the entire apartment, she decided to make herself some coffee. As she filled the kettle and switched it on, she had a funny feeling she was being watched. Turning around, she scanned the room, the windows, and the corners with her eyes. The curtains moved, and she stared at them. Paranoia? Probably. But she had every right to be with the kind of stuff she was involved in now.
