Look at potions, he constantly threatens to make Harry or Ron or Neville drink their potions when they've obviously been screwed up. He can find a way to justify that and say it's part of his curriculum. Now put him in a job where he can hex students and just say try to get outta that, obviously Harry and Neville will be hexed at least once per class. It would be like letting Filch beat the students.

I totally agree with that! I don't think its just because Snape is better at potions and there is no one to take the potions position. Athena made the parallell about not leaving a recovering alcoholic alone in the house with a 6pack and that definately has its merits, but I think there could also be something deeper.his reason must have been very deep, bad enough to allow Umbridge.

No one, except students, has ever said anything about it. Neither DD nor Snape have ever said or hinted at it. When Snape teaches the class for Lupin he doesn't even seem that enthusiastic for being there.
The only evidence the kids have that he wants the job is that he has hated all of the teachers in the post. Quirrel was the bad guy, Snape knew it and was trying to stop him. Lockhart was a putz. Lupin was a good guy but Snape has hated him since school. Moody wasn't liked by Snape because Snape thought Moody was trying to frame him or something. and then Umbridge was pure evil, everyone hated her.
