We've come to understand that JK pays a lot of attention to the names that she uses in the series and that most are pretty significant. And I've recently come across two that present a somewhat scary possibility. Lucius Malfoy and Cornelius Fudge.

The surnames are simple enough: Fudge, meaning something messed up or confusing; and Malfoy, 'bad thing' or 'bad faith' in the French translation. It makes sense but both are a bit obvious.

However, when examining the first names, it becomes a bit more interesting. Cornelius and Lucius were both popes in existance around 250 AD. After his death, Pope Cornelius was immediately succeded by Pope Lucius. Furthermore, prior to his death, Pope Cornelius was sent into exile and died due to the fact that the Papacy was coming into harsh criticism while under his rule. During that time, and Antipope established himself and challenged the reign of Cornelius, which lasted for about two years. After Cornelius' exile, Pope Lucius was appointed and a short time later was exiled, as well. He later returned, but his reign only lasted for a year.

Based on this, I think it's possible that Fudge will be driven out of his post as Minister of Magic and eventually killed. Lucius will be instituted shortly thereafter but driven out by the efforts of Dumbledore&Co, but eventually make a comeback of sorts later on. I know it's a bit speculative, but based on the names and history, it makes sense. Ideas?

That's absolutely awesome!!!

Remember that clue thread somehwere, and one of the words was sacked... making Fudge the one getting fired!

And now that Lucious isn't a govener anymore, he sort of need a positionthat puts him in comtrol of something, as thats' always been a part of the story... Draco going on about all the power his father has...

And Fudge's decisions to go against DD at the end of GoF would definately mess up things!

I wonder though, wether it will be DD who gets Fudge removed from power, or Lucious... :eekie: DD seems to want to operate around him, so I'm thinking that Malfoy might come up with some kind of plan to discredit Fudge, and replace him as such???

But anyways, just wanted to say again, damn awesome theory Blaise!!!

Brilliant one, Baise!!

In the 'characters' section of this forum, there is a topic called 'who's most likely to join the dark side?, where we've been discussing the possibility that Fudge might have some connections to Voldemort. If this is true and you connect both theories, then Lucius possibly knows/finds
out about it and uses his knowledge to get Cornelius sacked from his position. If that happened, fleeing into exile would be Fudge's only chance to be spared Azkaban.

Who do you think that it will be possible for Lucious to accuse/proove that fudge was working for Voldie without incriminating himself??? :???:

Didn't figure out about that one, but I think he'll find a way...passing on a secret evidence maybe...we all know that Lucius keeps some secret things in his house...and that he has experiences with passing things on :)

Okies, well, if electrical things dont' work around magic, then he couldnt' have taped a convo between them...

I dont' think that Voldie would be stupid enough to send letters, since they can easily fall into the wrong hands.. :(

Could he use magic to show something without having been present, or covering up the fact that he was present... :???: (Lucious that is...)

I really do like the idea, I'm just trying to figure out a way that itwoudl work!!! :D

If the theory holds true, then being the cunning Malfoy he is, Lucius will definitely find a way to incriminate Fudge without getting himself in trouble, at the same time. I could see him being granted immunity in exchange for information against Fudge. Remeber how in the Death Eater trials we saw in GoF, a lot of them were let off the hooks for just naming names. I would think that Lucius might do the same sort of thing. And we can't forget that Lucius has both the money and power to get himself off the hook.

And good point about the word 'sacked.' Yay for corroboration!

Great, great theory Zab; if things go as with the popes, then Fudge will have a hard time when Voldemort starts to make chaos rule again. And is very likely to be sacked if he isn't very god at stoping him, the only thing I think is that I'm not sure Lucius could get to be Minister of Magic, he should have a better job to achive that position, no?

Dunno, I really think he could. I mean, it seems as though he already has the Ministry in his pocket. He'd just need to pull some strings to get Fudge removed and then the job is his. I could see Dumbledore&Co. putting up some resistance, but other than that, I can't think of many obstacles that he'd face.

I definately like the idea of Lucious becoming Minester of Magic! ANd Blaise, I think that your right abouthim finding some very cunning way to discredit Fudge, I was just wondering what it might be... but I don't think that he will incriminate himself for it... even if there is an offer of innumty, like Karakoff got... I htink that Lucious wants people to think that he is a good person... not evil, and never willingly associated with Voldie...

After all, would people appoint a past DE to the position of Minister of Magic??? :-?

That's a good point Holly, Lucius was DE, sounds difficult for him to be Minister of Magic, unless Voldemort helps him in some way

They got past Bagman being a former DE, didn't they? And MacNair, I think. They're both former DE's who now work for the Ministry.

And anyway, I would imagine that Lucius has so many connections, it wouldn't be too difficult.

Bagman wasn't a death eater; he was only acussed, but became innocent in the trial.
And Macnair kills animals, that is very different from being MoM.
