Looking for a good book...preferably fiction.

Just read Glenn Beck's, The Real America. GB is a conservative political radio show host. It was a good quick read, but looking for something different now. Yearning for a good book to buy.

Currently I'm reading Bridgett Jones' Diary and The Colour of Magic. Neither is particully brilliant. I haven't been really reading as much lately as I should be.

I am currently reading "Catch 22" by Joseph Heller - gecko recommended it to me, and I must say, it's brilliant. A very funny and strange story, set in Italy during the 2nd WW.
Alsop worth reading: "The Physician" by Noah Gordon, one of my all time favourites, and all Discworld Novels by Terry Pratchett.

I finished Mitana's Patagonia recently (but that's a Slovak writer) and before that I had read Margaret Atwood's 'The Handmaid's Tale' which is a wonderful book, I'd recommend you that (altough it's rather scary).

I finished Fool on the Hill by Matt Ruff today. It's... whacky, in a positive way. I liked it. The next will be Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett, I think.

Yey, Guards Guards is cool, but have you read Men At Arms? That's a brilliant one too. I recommend all Terry Pratchett's books about the Night Watch - hilarious!

I've been on a bit of a Jane Austen kick lately and am now reading Emma. I also recently finished Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by ?something? Maguire. It was different, like Cinderella but Cinderella not the poor defenceless one. :P

great recs....

Postby Augusta Longbottom » Wednesday 26 May 2004 12:40:48am

Great rec's everyone. I made a list of books to check out -- I'd posted the same question on another one of my favorite forums and got a lot of great responses there too so I have a hefty list of books to look into.

I decided to order (from Amazon):
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
Pride & Prjudice, Sense & Sensibility, and Persuasion by Jane Austen
The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler

Right now I'm reading The Lost Village by Mark Edward Hall. It's pretty good so far but not all that well written.

Thanks again for the rec's.

OMG! I Loved that book!!!

Ok, anyways, I'm currently on an Elizabeth Hayden kick. I read Destiny, which I own completely by accident and read purely out of boredom. I really enjoyed the characters and the world they lived in. And since it was the last book of a trilogy I went back and read Raphsody and Prophcey. And I receintly discovered that she wrote another book for the series called Requim for the Sun. So, I'll be getting that one soon.

Also, I read Song for Susanna by Stephen King. And I'm anxiously waiting for his next book later this summer.

Wow, this is the most "pleasure reading" I've done in years . . . it's great!

I have a list of books I read over and over again. I'm the pickiest reader in the world. People will say to me "Oh, you liked that? You would LOVE this." and I hate it. I don't even always like the same authors.

Outside of Harry Potter, I like:

Anne of Green Gables
Anne of Avonlea
Anne of the Island
(skip over Anne of Windy Poplars, it's useless)
Anne's House of Dreams
Anne of Ingleside
Rainbow Valley
Rilla of Ingleside
The Left Behind series (keep reading through the third through sixth books, they get better again)
Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl
Anne Frank Remembered (less about Anne, more about Miep)
Sophie's Heart (Christian romance, it's actually one of the few good ones)
the Lancaster County trilogy by Beverly Lewis
Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe
The Princess Bride (way better than the movie even)
To Kill a Mockingbird
Animal Farm

I've gotton so I can get through all these, plus the Harry Potter books, in about six weeks flat

I like to read.
