I didnt' think that Romulus was a bad guy in the myth, was he? I know that he killed his bro and all (and that would normally make someone a bad guy) but in those myths, even the good guys all go around killing people for insults and stuff like that, no??? :???:

Yeah, in the myths it is very common to kill people, but not yur own brother (I mean if you kill your brother you must be bad, unless you have a good reason, and Rom didn't have one); so in case Romulus apperas he will have to be a bad guy, if Jo sticks to the myth

But does that make up for killing his brother...if he's a good guy otherwise, he has at least some evil tendencies (just like a werewolf, hm? Maybe Remus is in fact Romulus and killed his brother, the original Remus...no, forget about that one :razz:

Why is someone good because he build a city; I mean see for example Sauron from Lord off the Rings and he was pure evil, and still built a great empire.

Okies, maybe because it's a Roman Myth Neo...

If you asked the people who Saron ruled, they would probably say taht he is a good guy, who is fighting for good things? *maybe not in that case, but LOTR is a little extreme...

But my point is, the Romans are hardly going to comeup with mythology stating that the founder or their city was an evil guy, now are the? :-?

Romas make up its own myth, so if they make the builder if their city a man that killed his brother I believe that they wanted him to be bad.

Well, as with any myth, there are several versions...

From what I could find, this is the most widely used one... *or at least part of it...*

Romulus and Remus started planning a new town in the same place in which they had been found by Lupa. They decided that one of them would build a town and the other would help. So they went questioning the gods, asking for signs (presumably from the flight patterns of birds) that would tell them who should lead. Another version of the tale says that they had a competition to be won by the brother who saw more birds (or more birds of some species).

Romulus went to the top of Palatine hill, Remus to the top of Aventine. Romulus became convinced that he had been selected by the gods, or that he had seen more birds, so he casually threw his lance on the hill to find the place; when in the ground, the lance (which was wooden) immediately became the corniolus, a sacred tree in Rome.

With the help of a white cow and a white bull, he then used his plough to trace the square borders of his town, following the traditional Etruscan ceremony. Remus outrageously crossed this line, invading Romulus's area and happily saying "Can you see how easy it is?" Romulus killed him with one blow of his sword, declaring that everyone who dared to offend Rome would pay with his life.

Romulus was the first ruler of Rome, and reigned until he disappeared during a storm, carried off by his father Mars.

So, Romulus was simply defending his territory... and why would they make a bad guy a god... *later in the myth...*

I have to agree with Neo on this one. I don't care how much you love your country or how proud you are of it, fratricide is still wrong. You're right, people in ancient Rome did kill each other over v. casual things, but that still doesn't make it right. Romulus was a powerful and damn good leader, but that still doesn't make him a good person.
