Should I go to camp this summer, or stay home?

Exactly what the topic says.

I've been looking into an eight week long summer program at Harvard University. BUT, I'm exhausted from junior year (in high school), eight weeks is a little long, and I'm having a world of problems sending in the application (which, by the way, was due on May 31st! )

Here are the pro's of going to the camp:
1) I get to be in what I assume is similar to a college environment, which might prepare me for what I'll be heading to in a year or so
2) I get to hang around with people my age
3) I get a change of scenery
4) I don't have to put up with my parents for the whole summer
5) I get to learn salsa
6) I can finish my school's 10 hour community service requirement up in Boston
7) I can exercise my indepedence, not to mention exercise period.

Here are the con's of going to camp:
1) I only have classes 2 days out of the week, so, counting the weekends, that's about 5 days to goof off. I'm not really worried that I'll be doing anything stupid, or anything, I'm just afraid that it's going to be a waste of time
2) It's eight weeks. That's a pretty long time. I don't know if I can last that long.
3) I won't have time to study for SATs, which I'll be retaking in October.
4) It's a lot of money- the tuition is more than 8,000 dollars
5) If I have to study a lot (which I probably will), I'll be burnt out for senior year, which would be bad, because I have to get really good grades first semester since I bombed this year.


And here are the pro's of staying home:
1) I get to rest
2) I get to study for SAT's
3) I might be able to get a kitten in July instead of August
4) I'll be able to prepare for a really important piano competition in the fall (if I win, I'll be able to play in Alice Tully Hall in New York City!)
5) I'll be able to read to my heart's delight
6) I'll finally be able to work on some of my stories
7) I'll be able to get a job, maybe

And here are the con's:
1) I'll be cooped up in the house all summer, probably isolated, since everyone else will be on vacation or at camp
2) I'll have to put up with my parents all summer
3) I'll have to study for the SAT's all summer

So. If you were me, would you go to camp, or would you stay home? I'm inclined to go to camp, but I can't make up my mind. And the camp starts in a week and a half or something like that.

what did you do last year and would you have the chance to go to camp next year?

What would you be learning at camp? would it be benificial to you do you really wanna learn it?

ok so a lotta days a week to goof off. why couldn't you set one or more of these days aside each week to study for your SATs , and also one could be for SLEEPING

then you would get to go to camp, get to study up for SATs and also be rested for next term.

also the money. if your parents are ok to pay it, then they are obveously happy for you to go and think it would benifit you.

I would go, if you don't tou will regret for a while. If you go, you at least can say that you took the risk.

Well, since I can't comment onthe financial situation, but providing htat's fine, I'd definately go...

You would get an idea of what college life is like, and its' a big change, all taht independance! Also, you would have 5 days a week off. This would be plenty of time to study for your SAT's and get in some rest, which you will need! there is a reason that you have big breaks at uni, you need time to regenerate!

I would take advantage of the oppurtunity, proveded that it's okies financially!

Yeah, if you can afford the expense then I say go! I was actually looking into taking classes at Columbia this summer, but I did a similar thing at Berkely last summer and decided that I'd rather save the money. So, alas...

But anyway, I think that what you'd learn and the experiences you'd have would definitely outweight any regret you'd have of going. I was terrified of going across the country last summer and wishing I had just stayed home and relaxed, but I had an absolute blast! The things I learned, the friends I made, and the experience we all had were terrific! I recommend, without any reservation at all, that you go. You really won't regret it!

Thanks for all your advice! I'm actually still waiting to hear from them, but for now I'm convinced to go. Anyway, three of my close friends will be going with me, so I shouldn't have that much trouble adjusting, at least.

Except, now I found out that I have a piano competition on October 16th. If I win it, I get to play in Alice Tully Hall in NYC, which is part of Lincoln Center. If I go to camp, I don't know if I'll have time to practice for it . . .

*sigh*

Choices, choices. Isn't it kind of sad that I'll be going away to college in the fall of 2004, and I still can't make decisions by myself?

That Harvard program is very good. I've heard some good things from my friends who went to it a couple years back.
