Just an interesting fact...

According to THE WEEK (The best of the US and International media!) The biggest news in paris is that

"Harry Potter and The Order Of the Phoenix Became the first book printed in English to reach the top of France's best-seller list, with 41,000 copies sold in two weeks. Many customers and one Paris bookship did not speak a word of English, but they snapped up the teenage wizard's latest adventures anyway. 'I've never seen anything like that...' said bookseller Ruth Baxter. A French trasnlation is due in December, but the hype surrounding the English version's release was too much for fans to resis, said Sophie Martin, a French pollster 'There was so much curiosity' she said. "

Just thought that was interesting as well as heartwarming

that is interesting, and odd that people would buy a book that they couldn't even read!

It wasn't spam, hoopmaster had changed some of the text so that it was now bold in answer to your statement about whether or not they could speak English.

I think taht's great that people are buying the books when they cant even read them  ! I know that I have a lot of japanese stuff that I cant read, but I still have it. If there is something that you are really into, then it wont matter if you cant read it, because at least you have it. Its all a matter of being able to say "What? YOU don't have the latest Harry Potter book? Well, I must say I'm rather surprised, I've had mine for AGES..."

Or perhaps they mean that the people can't speak English, but are able to read it? Learning to read a language is way easier than learning to speak it!

That is possible, because I read french rather well, but I can barely speak it at all, just a few words..so I can read french books and stories, but I when I went to France I had a hard time speaking and communicating with my host family...eck...so maybe they could read english, but just couldn't speak it well...or maybe they knew a person who knew english fluently and could tell them the story...
