And why hasn't Harry ever used it in dirty and innopropriate ways... wait, maybe hasn't started thinking of those sort of things yet, maybe in the next book or something...

Maybe its like one of those double sided jerseys. You know the type - one way they're blue, but turn them inside out and they're yellow. Could be that one way around the invisibility cloak looks normal but turn it the other way and you get the invisible side.

In the P/SS the invisibility cloak is described:
Something fluid and silvery gray went slithering to the floor where it lay in gleaming folds.
Harry picked up the shining, silvery cloth off the floor. It was strange to touch, like water woven into material.

In Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them the Demiguise is described:

The Demiguise is found in the Far East, though only with great difficulty, for this beast is able to make itself invisible when threatened, and can be seen only by wizards skilled in it's capture.
The Demiguise is a peaceful herbivorous beast, something like a graceful ape in appearance, with large, black doleful eyes more often than not hidden by it's hair. The whole body is covered with long, fine, silky, silvery hair. Demiguise pelts are highly valued as the hair may be spun into Invisibility Cloaks.

From these two bits of information I am assuming that the Invisibility Cloak can be seen when not in use. The hair of the Demiguise must be somewhat visable in order to spin it into fabric. Anyway I wonder if JKR has ever stated anything about this in any of her interviews?

maybe it responds to body heat...or perhaps chemicals produced by the body or the wizard's thoughts.

Perhaps when the two front edges are closed together it kind of switches on. :???: Does that make any sence?

I agree with Krum!
I have already asked that myself... but I found out that it is a magical item... It can "know" when to get invisible
