WOW great replies everyone! now I'll wrirte a bit more about my feelings on Lord of the Rings.

Sonkem, you sound just like my dad! (he's one of the biggest tolkien freaks I've ever met, including you guys!) he was really disappointed about the ents and faramir, too... and i was as well! the elves at helms deep didn't really bother me, though. faramir was the worst.

we just bought the TTT DVD (which is what inspired this topic :-) ) and when the extended version comes out, my dad'll buy that, too! the extended FotR was incredible, and i can't wait for TTT.

Lizzy, I don't think you're really in the minority for liking TTT better. perhaps on this site, but most of my friends like it better, too. I think I just didn't like it because they changed so much. I am really looking forward to RotK though. It looks (from the preview) better than the first two.

The movies are wonderful, i think basically the best job that could be done was done. but, nothing can beat the books (in my opinion). just the depth that Tolkein went to, its hard to put that on screen. the stories are so complex i don't think movies can capture the "particular charm" as gecko put it. :D Tolkien made up his own language, for goodness' sake! i don't know if even JK has put that much into HP. I think the LotR movies had a little more effort put into them than HP, too. The people who were involved in LotR really had a love for the books and had for a long time. not to say that the HP crew don't love HP, but it just seems more commercial to me than LotR. I don't know if I can really have anything to back that up, its just my feeling about it.

It is so nice to find other people who understand!

gives sonkem and gecko a group hug

I was so upset about Faramir. I couldn't believe that Peter Jackson could do that. There is no need for me to gone on about it as Sonkem has already it said it and i agree with her completely.

After about a week of me sulking and complaining to people who didn't really seem to understand what the big problem for me with Faramir was, I decided that at the end of the day as a film TTT is excellent. In terms of the scale and effects it is the better of the two so far, but you needed to have the TFotR first to set up the story so it is really hard to say which is "best".

Like all movies based on a book, you are going to upset some of the fans whatever you do. I know there were a lot of people disappointed by Tom Bombadil not being in TFotR, but I wasn't particularly bothered about that.

I am very much looking forward to RotK. There is a cinema in Cardiff with enourmous screens - so I might try and see it there. And of course, afterwards there are bound to be places showing the films back to back!

That the newish one next to the Millenium Stadium?

Now that I've heard what you've said some things seem to make more sense, I shall go and read the books :D .

Yes! I went down to see the Speedway GP back in June - we got there early, it was blazing hot, so we decided to escape from the sun and go and watch The Matrix2. The screen was HUGE!

I think with films such as LOTRs you have to see it on a decent screen. We recently bought a new TV and surround sound thingy (I'm not the technically minded one in my household). There was stuff on the FotR DVD that I hadn't heard before on the old system. If anyone needs an excuse to get a really good TV/DVD/Home cinema system, the LOTRs films are it.

So Gwared, what do you mean about some thing making more sense now?

Well the cinema wasn't open the last time I was in Cardiff which was about a year and a half ago now...

My parents have a huge TV screen and the same surround sound system I've got it's great. We watch films on theirs and I play PS games in surround sound on mine :D .

The thing that makes more sense is after FotR I found one of those silly little "Which LotR character are you most like?" and I got Faramir (who is Boromir's brother?) and the discription was pretty cool, but in the movie he was just like his brother and that kinda disappointed me. Should remember that books are always better than the movies :-? .

The little post about elves at helms deep reminded me of the close call we had, Peter Jackson tried to put Arwen in Helms Deep....O_o That was like hell....Arwen at Helms deep??!?!?! What the....f-in christ man.

I've read all the books, and am in the middle of reading the Simarilion (lloooong history of Middle Earth man...) Their brilliant *bows to Tolkien*

Anyway, I was really impressed with the ents, I thought they were done pretty darn well.

And I'm really looking forward to seeing how they end RoTK...whether they end it with what happens in the apendages *aka Frodo going to the Grey Havens, blah blah* or if they'll end it just like the book....Interesting thought

No, my hair is...hmm, well at the moment it's between brown and blond (with reddish bits in places, my hair does weird things when the sun bleaches it!). Tricolour Hair!!!!

Well, I couldn't wait any longer, but I am tight so wasn't going to buy the 2 DVD set - I went and rented a copy. As a film I really enjoyed it - but I had forgotten just how angry I had got about Faramir before. Anyway, I got angry for a bit, and then realised that he looked really yummy - I had not appreciated this at the cinema due to me being angry that his character had been changed.

The preview to RotK has made me really excited. I don't want to wish my life away, but I can't wait until December!

Faramir yummy? I just can't see it... :-?

in december, some theatres around the US are going to be showing the EXTENDED version on a couple of days, of both the FotR and tTT. then after they show them separately they'll show them back to back-- thats like nine hours of movie! i want to go, though.
