Yeah, there are much bigger forums in other places. And also when new people sign on and see how many posts we have - they will more likely to stay here, because the forum is "well-established" to them.

It works really weird.... Today is was just great fast and everything...untill 30 min ago!!! Where it just started freezing on me making it impossible to post.

Yes, exactly the same problem here (which probably proves it's not a location-thing). Everything came to a total stop at about 9.20 GMT, and thanks Pinkypricess - it seems that 9.30 wasn't the only time things stopped entirely today. It's still dreadfully slow now but at least things are moving. I've sent another request to the server folks, advising that I'm considering leaving them, and started looking into an alternative hosting company (who actually gave a full reply to a quick enquiry I sent them within about an hour or thereabouts which makes things look promising if we do have to move).

ANOTHER move? that might be even worse! i mean, things are pretty slow around here (in terms of posting, not internet speed) since the first one. if we go through another big move, we might loose all our active posters! :o

If the existing server people can speed things up the move won't happen, but if they can't, speaking from a personal point of view I can't live with this snail-like slowness. And if it's annoying me, I'm sure it's getting to everyone else too - all credit and thanks to everyone who has stuck around for the last few weeks as I wouldn't be surprised or blame anyone if this type of virtual-stop speed drove people away (please don't go anyone though :) ).

There were a number of technical and timing reasons for the extended down-time in the move that's just occurred. If there is another big move, I am virtually certain that with a bit of planning I can get it done with a maximum down time of 2 days and it's possible that it could be done with zero down-time (although the zero down-time would probably involve a couple of days worth of posts which would be lost in the transition period).

i would say downtime is preferrable to loosing posts....its so annoying when people try the no downtime method and you keep posting....then suddenly you get to the new server and all those posts have vanished and everyone has to repeat themselves.....

I agree with Sonkem. 2 days down time is hardly anything.

I wouldnt mind another move if it makes things quicker, the current situation is really grating on my nerves. I always go on at around 8:00 for 30 mins bafore school, and its ok for a bit, but after 2 or 3 posts it takes about 5 mins to load each page, and if I go off and they try to go bak on it wont load at all, it really annoys me.

yeah, i agree with you guys. 2 days is nothing... i would certainly be willing to do that if it would erase all this slowness!

I don't mind having to wait for a couple of days to change the server.
I, myself, is having loads of problems with the existing server. I ended up with double-posts, luckily most of it happened in the Gryffindor forum which I can delete the extra posts myself. If my double posts happen outside Gryffindor, I apologise for my error.

I'm not complaining, besides I'm used to "slowness" already(my pc is one of them)...hehe
I just hope the great hall mods are not going after my blood

why is it that you get double posts...i mean, is it just random or do you click submit, think it isnt working and click submit again....

because if its the second option i would suggest clicking preview post if its going slow....then checking the topic review under the post box to see if your post has shown up yet....cos i do that when it seems like it isnt working and alot of the times the post is already in the thread by the time id think to click submit again....
