Major UK (and possibly EU) Internet Problems

Postby Paul » Wednesday 26 November 2003 12:10:05am

I've been having major troubles connecting to sites today and have just discovered why. From what I've read so far, it seem that a major transatlantic cable know as TAT-14 has died. It's apparently a northern link to the USA - unfortunately the Southern link also died earlier this month  . When working, TAT-14 could apparently 640Gbps of EU/US traffic.

There also is an intermittent PIPEX routing problem at PIPEX's North London site. According to PIPEX:
Symptoms: The backbone problem is affecting several UK ISPs, including PIPEX, and is likely to result in slow or intermittent connectivity to US sites. Routing through the UK part of the network is also likely to be affected.

Apparently the TAT-14 problem happened in the middle of this afternoon. I'm not sure how long ago the PIPEX problem started. It's been horrendous today, especially from about 9 or 10 o'clock PM. I've been getting more unobtainable messages than correct connections to sites. I really hope it is fixed soon too.

lol  Thanks Mint. Whoever or whatever caused it, their dastardly plans seems to have been thwarted. :-) Things have now been reportedly "resolved by the Tier-1 provider who maintains the link" (err, whoever that is). :) Everything does seem to be back to normal from my end which is a huge relief. Joto and Broccoli, I hope your problems have gone too, and anyone else who may have had trouble as well.
