Now I know this is a harry potter forum, i'm not a dimwitt.
but i'd like to know if anyone here prefers Lord Of The Rings?
I for one do and I am only 12 and just finished the 3 books yesterday after starting them 2 weeks ago

I think Lord of The Rings will have fans who are generally older than fans who likes Harry Potter

For me, I haven't seen a single book of LoTR trilogy but I have seen the Two Tower movie. If I'm so interested in watching the final installment, I guess you could say I like LoTR :grin:

lol, i love both books but i cant really compare them.....both soo different....I mean The Hobbit would be better to compare Harry Potter with since both are kids books...and then I think it could be the hobbit but I'm not really sure now as I haven't read it for years...

Well, hmmm, *cough* this is a harry potter forum but I spose you can like LOTR more. Its pretty impressive to read the books in 2 weeks when your 12 though, I did try reading them but I didnt get far past the council of elrond, though I love the movies and Ive read all the 'visual companions' and things.

Dont think I could pick a favourite though.

i'd have to say HP. i tried to get into LOTR, but i just couldn't. i will most likely try again sometime, but it was just too slow developing for me.

Exactly the same here!! I don't have a lot of patience for slow developing books.

I said on the othe LOTR thread that I dozed off frequently when I tried to read The Fellowship of the Ring. It's sitting somewhere in the house. I'll get back to it later.
I'll didn't see the movies at the cinemas but I got the DVDs. Not too impressed but that might be due to my poor home theatre system.

I have tried to read LoTR but like Dragon Master i did find it too slow developing. So on the book front i'd have to say that it'd definately be Harry Potter. However with regards to the films i have to say that i think LoTR is definately better than HP. I dont think that harry potter films do the books justice i'm afraid, even though they are good.
so i have to say overall HP is better because i prefer a good book to a film, at the same time i love LOTR films.

Definitely, HP... I like LotR very very much... but it was written 50 years ago (i think)... So, I can't have theories about what's going to happen after something... I mean, with HP I can always think Does this matter, Is this important for the plot?... But with LotR, the story is already know... everything is written, and what is for us to conjure, will never be answered...

Nevertheless, I really like Tolkien and his mind... He was such a big man with great great inteligence and imagination...

That's a good point, we cant speculate about LoTR, but we can with HP. 1/2 the fun of HP is being able to discuss it, and the fact that we're always wondering what might happen and how things will turn out.

I agree with Sonkem - these books are so different. U really can't compare. I like them both.

And as many pointed out -there is of course more "exitment" right now with Harry Potter - simply because it....didn't end yet

well you can sort of since Tolkien died before finishing the Silmarillion so if you are a real Tolkien freak there is stuff people can speculate on.

also, I didn't find it very slow developing...the best thing is to read The Hobbit first and then progress on the LotR

Well, I've read both the Harry Potter and the LotR series. (Actually I'm reading the Return of the King now) and I just can't compare them.
They 're sooo different. How come some people think they are simmilar? I'm sure they have not read neither of them. They must just heard about the stories.
I love reading Harry Potter because it's more easy-reading than the LotR. Well, I like the LotR too, but Harry Potter is still my favourite!

There are some similarities I think, but the Tolkien's world is more complex than the Harry Potter world.
I like both series, but probably LOTR a bit more!

I have this edition of The Hobbit that includes a cd on which Tolkien himself reads a part of the book! Very cool

i dunno. i read The Hobbit in a couple weeks, but it took me about two years to complete the trilogy. i really liked them, but when i read them i was only 8 & 9 so it was very difficult reading. i really love the movies.

i read each hp book in about two days... :lol:

. the hp movies definately didn't do the books justice... the lotr movies are way better (that might be because the lotr movies are aimed at an older audience, though.) so, i dunno. i guess i would place lotr i little above hp... but not much ;-)
