College Applications...

Postby Devinci » Thursday 4 December 2003 4:14:47am

So, I'm applying to college. *shudder* But, I have a phobia of actually filling out the applications...not to mention my utter terror towards the essays...I'm not quite sure how to approach it all...should I put everything I;ve done for the past four years...or should I only put the best parts of those things? *Shudder again*

So scary! :-?

Not to mention the fact that I'm going to have to endure an audition (I'm majoring in theatre)

Anyone got any good monologues hidden up their sleeve??

Is it like a CV that you have to write? In case of a CV you usually write everything you have done, there should be no "holes". But of course you can try and stress the best things...

What kind of an essay do you have to write? Is it like an exam?

well, i dunno about other countries...but school in US you usually fill out a form in paper or on internet. and colleges usually require you to write one or more essays that talk about u and who you are. very irritating esp if you are applying to many different ones and they all require you to write something different and give you these ridiculous prompt.

anywayz, this reminds me...i should get going w/ mines

devinci: if ur majoring in theatre...i have no idea for monologues...sorry

Universities in Britain don't in general require several essays...we had one personal statement that was part of the UCAS form.....and we got little booklets telling us how to fill those out to make em sound good..... and then you get the odd subject or Uni that requires interview or entrance exams...Oxford and Cambridge require interviews.....I managed to pick a subject that didn't require anything like that in any of the Uni's I applied to.

but sorry, since i do maths not theatre I aint got a clue on the monolouge thing.....

As for the personal statements.....I may be able to help out with that....i did scan it for a friend a while ago...assuming i still have the files there are about 14 images that would have to be emailed.....

My advice is to make a copy of one of the applications and just start filling it out. Once you get that over with, the whole process seems so much less daunting. I think that the hardest part of doing mine was starting, but once I got past that, everything kind of fell into place.

As for the essays, just think of something that you feel strongly about and begin writing. If it's ideas that you're having trouble coming up with, then there are some essay sites with sample essays you can look to for inspiration. [url=http://www.planetpapers.com/Admissions_Essays/]Planet Papers[url] is an invaluable resource that has some great tutorials and samples available for free!

I'm not sure how long your monologues are supposed to be, or from what genre and the like, but The Monologue Archive has plenty from all different types of theatre at various lengths.

Hope that helps, and best of luck with everything!

I have to write a personal statement, but in third person, as if someone else was saying it about me...*sigh* Damn art schools

Anyway, thanks for the tips and moral support in my time of need...*sob*

Good idea with the photocopying...I'll just practice a whole hell of a lot...then work up the nerve to fill out the REAL one...
