lost heads and the power of luna

Postby Athena Appleton » Thursday 29 January 2004 8:17:02pm

Hey, this technically touches on two entirely different theories, but they are incorporated, so if you're a moderator and want to change this up, fine with me...

Did anyone notice how many "lost heads" there are in book 5? The Hog's Head sign (a decapitated pig), students "losing their heads completely" during O.W.L. exams...

And did anyone notice that, however ditsy she seems, Luna was the one who did not lose her head in the department of mysteries? When she, Ginny and Ron are running from the Death Eaters and they wind up in the planet room, Ron and Ginny are both hit and Ron's got a serious giggling problem and Ginny's got a broken ankle, but Luna is unhurt. This is actually the first time we see her where she seems to be focused and capable. Do you think there's any significance there?

It could mean anything...

As I am in a literary since of mine, perhaps Luna's character is a metaphoric attack on society.

In "normal" situations Luna appears to be odd and weird, causing jeers from her fellow "normal" students. This obviously displays the dislike of the different in our society.

However, at closer anyalsis, Luna is the only normal and sane one during the DoM. This perhaps might be a way of showing that some times what society demands as "normal" might not be the right and normal thing to do. It might show how rejection of conformity can better for one's well being as opposed to being "normal".

That's an excellent point, Meg! That put me in mind of something else where things seem to be "mixed up" from normalcy...
With Hagrid's "pets", he names the monsterous ones sweet names (Norbert the dragon, Fluffy the three-headed dog) and he names the normal nice pets horrible names (Fang the "cowardly" dog)... I love how J.K. Rowling takes what we assume and twists it around differently in so many ways.... Luna is just a prime example of that.

I'm sorry... either you're saying that Luna's dad told her her mother died in an accident (insert the word "house" at random here), or you're saying your dad read the books and told you that Luna's mom died in an accident.

lol, everyone seems very confused and off topic!

i'm guessing that wizard_gurl4ev is trying to say that she thinks that maybe the same thing happened to luna as i did to harry. ie the loss a parent through them tring to protect her and thats might be why she's a bit wierd.
if this is what she's trying to say then i have to disagree. if this was the case how come no-one heard about it? and if luna did have the same protection over her from her mothers love then if voldermort did try and kill her then the curse would have still acted in the same so we would have the girl that lived and not the boy that lived.

as for the memory charm i dont know why they would have had this placed on them?! it hasnt mentioned them doing anything that would be best if they had forgotten it.

I really don't think there's anything suspicious around Luna's mother's death. The entire Lovegood clan seems to be a little loopy, and it really is quite possible that some hairbrained idea of her mom's could have backfired. As far as the memory charms go, Luna doesn't have a memory problem, she has a quirky personality.

Now, if you want to get into memory charms, I think there's a very very good chance Neville had one put on him as a small child, and that's why his memory is so notoriously horrible. If Harry remembers, even a tiny bit, his parents' deaths, and Neville was a little older than Harry when his folks were tortured (they were tortured after Voldywart disappeared), then someone could have used one on him.

Sorry, I know, I'm going off onto tangents unrelated to the topic, that's just how my mind works... you know, "hey, that reminds me of this..." "this is kinda like that.." and before I know it, I'm on a completely different topic. :-)

Excelent pint Athena, its possible that Neville was memory-charmed so that he would not some horrible trauma... But we don´t know if Neville was present when h`´s parents were turtured into madness.

On the contrary... Luna seems to have an excellent memory... Remeber the train, when she said, while reading the quibler, that Harry had danced with Padma? And I think she also says something about Ron (although I can't remember right now)

That's exactly what I was saying... "she doesn't have a memory problem, she has a quirky personality."

You're right, though, I hadn't thought about how she seems to have an exceptionally good memory...
