I wish i hadn't read these books...

Postby Plep » Saturday 21 February 2004 7:15:07pm

Hi all,

Wait, wait! before you al start yelling and shouting at me, let me explain this first.

I've always been very skeptical about the Harry Potter books.
However a few weeks ago, while waiting for the train, i became a bit curious after reading the back of the Philosopher's Stone, so i decided to buy it.
And wow that was really the best train ride i've ever had! I finished that book the very same day and the rest of the books within 3 weeks.

So what's the problem your thinking...well the problem is that i really don't know what to do with my spare time now i've finished the books. I don't really enjoy watching tv or surfing on the internet anymore.
I've tried reading other books but i always throw them away after a few pages thinking that i just won't be as good as Harry Potter...and rereading just isn't the same.

I wonder if anyone had the same feeling after finishing the books, or am i just being stupid???

cheers,
Plep

You're not alone plep - I had almost the very same feeling after finishing Order of the Phoenix. Then I thought a moment and figured that the HP magic can continue whilst waiting for book 6 as there's the Harry Potter Fan Fiction area of the forum right here on BaO. I seriously felt both silly (for having felt the emptyness before realising it) and truly immensely happy at the same time that together here, everyone has helped to create not just a community for HP fans but a lifeline too to keep the magic going in the Fan Fiction area. Plus there's all the other parts of the board where discussions about theories I may have never thought of and loads of other stuff - a kind of second Hogwarts whilst JKR is :typing: typing away. :)

* Throws plep and everyone else a BaO lifeline*

Yes I have had the same feeling, and I usually have it again every time a new harry potter comes out. But it doesn't last too long, as I have plenty of other hobbies, so I just do them and wait for the next book.

Good topic Plep.

I have to admit I didn't have the same feeling but I do inderstand it. Probably the reason wha I haven't feel empty because I have a friend with who I can glory J.K.Rowling and kiss HP books and I go on this wonderful forum where I find out day by day that I'm not the only HP crazed human being-alien being.
And i'm not sorry because I've read the books, and neither should you be! We discovered perfection and that's a good thing!

I understand you, plep. But I don't agree about the re-reading! If you read the books again and again, you'll find more and more stuff to think about. Every time I read them I find new things I didn't notice before. And for me, that is what makes a book so great, that it doesn't get boring when re-reading it! And HP definitely has that quality!
Give it a try and let us know what you think. Enjoy!

Well, it does happen with me... Not only with Hary Potter, but also with other books, with movies, with music...

I think I have a 'creato-addiction' thing... Everytime I realise someone created a world (Tolkien, or Rowling) a wonderful music, a movie... I experience the feeling of being away! I don't care about other movies, books, ... it's really strange (I'm reeeeeaaly strange!!!) But then I realise life continues, and sometimes it leads me to create: I've made two guitar musics and I wrote a couple of things!

So, yeah! I understand you... but you are not alone in that feeling!

And welcome to BaO, wher you can share you're points of view with everyone, either about Harry Potter or not!

I don't regret reading the books (although i understand where you're coming from Plep). I just don't think i can wait for the next book! i mean, i have this low-grade sort of panic when i think how long i'll have to wait to read the next one. And then i remember that i'll get to see the next movie soon anyway, but it's not the same. Woe is me!

Plep at least you've read all five togheter!I've been waiting for second book to come out for weeks and months!I drived myself crazy, and the same thing with third and fourth and espacially with fifth book, but don't worry time will pass quick.I almost cried cause there are no more LotR movies, and can't imagine what will happen when there wont be HP books!!!!!!!!Sometimes I even wish all that is real and imagine an owl coming to my house at the end of eight grade(weird right?) and I get invitation to go to Hogwarts, and then I go back to earth and realise "only in my dreams"

I know where you are coming from there kiddo

I agree fan fictions really help keep the magic flowing and get your noodle going...of course I am partial to the FF because I am an author of one here...hehehe

re-reding them is also excellent because you find so many things that you missed before or more things to ponder and discuss here on BaO

Finding other great books is good too...give them a chance...LOTR is always a favorite and my personal favorite are The Chronicles of Narnia (basically CS Lewis is a genius). Give them a chance and you will be a well-rounded person in the fantasy area i do believe

I must find that book... The Chronicles of Narnia! So many times it is referred here, but I've never heard of it outside BaO...
I'm reading The Mists of Avalon, now!

By the way, I started with reading the philosopher's stone yesterday and once again i couldn't stop...i read until 4 in the morning
I really was amazed how much i had forgotten...i can't say it's the same as reading it the first time, but is was big fun nonetheless
