Hagrid's dad and Moody's eye

Postby darkcloak » Tuesday 24 February 2004 12:51:41pm

Just going through Goblet of Fire again and still laughing at the Herminone-Ron 'thing'. I had a couple of questions which may or may not have been discussed already.

1. Does anyone know how Hagrid's dad actually died? Is it in the books or has JK elaborated anywhere? We know he was a wizard and died the year after Hagrid was accepted into Hogwarts, before he was expelled, but is there anything else? Did he work for the Ministry ('Care of Magical Creatures Dept', hence Hagrid's love of them :???: )?

2. As a side note, in Dumbledore's Pensieve, during Barty Jr's trial, Moody doesn't have his glass eye. As this was the last of the trials of Voldermort's followers, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how Moody came to lose his eye? A more recent battle we don't yet know about?

Any thoughts?

I don't think it's mentioned anywhere... because of the kind of language and mood Hagrid uses when discussing it, I don't think it was traumatic or anything... but language and mood are intuitive, therefore unproven. On the "Care of Magical Creatures" thing, it's possible, but my son LOVES animals, and neither my husband nor I are animal people, so that doesn't necessarily mean anything...

Well, this was the last of the trials, but they've kept aurors around even when Voldemort wasn't a "threat"... Kingsley has worked steadily, and Tonks was recently made an auror... so apparently they have still had work for the last 13+ years... the Lestranges, Crouch Jr and Mystery-man couldn't have been the last of the bad dudes out there, they were just on trial for the last of the really bad stuff (torturing the Longbottoms)... so I think it's highly likely he lost his eye in some battle with a minor bad guy...

Oh... I don't think Hagrid's father's death is mentioned anywhere in the books... but is it important for the plot? I'm not saying these because I think it is a stupid question: it's not!! No question is stupid...
But I wonder if this is really an important thing, as JKR has had the opportunity for telling that and didn't tell!

As for Moody's eye, I agree with Athena! Autrors had that chance to fight more. Do we know who took his eye??

Joto: nope, some questions are stupid.. if i posted in the theories board "HARRY'S REALLY A GIRL" that's a stupid theory... lol this on isn't, though.

I don't think it's important to the storyline... if anything, I think his dad is mentioned and has died to show us that Hagrids half (as opposed to full) giant, and as a reason for why he and Dumbledore are so close (Dumbledore cared for him when he had nobody)...
