I just went back and read the section about the bewitched broomstick in P/SS... the only wands mentioned anywhere near there is that Hermione uses her wand to set Snape's robes on fire.

So some spells seem to require wands, some don't. Some spells can be done without wands, but wands make it easier. Some spells have to have words uttered, some don't, some are so fickle they depend on you saying the words correctly and using the correct flick of the wrist (ie. Ron trying to do wingardium leviosa in P/SS)... some require absolute concentration, others don't. This must by why wizards have to go to school, they just can't learn every little thing from books, because their power has to develop, and their knowledge of what to do to cast and direct spells correctly has to grow...

I think that it does depend on the complexity of the spell, doesn't DD open/lock (can't remember) a door without uttering a word. But when creating a port key in OotP he has to say 'Portus'

Also LV has to say Avarda Kevarda (sp??) when he tries to kill Harry in the MoM.

Dumbledore taps the kettle and says Portus, and I would imagine that he had his wand raised. Though they are powerful, so I am sure they can actually do advanced magic without wands, due to there sheer power

There's some magic that apparently requires a wand, and some doesn't, and some isn't done with a wand at all... just depends on what they're trying to do...

I think of wands as sort of instruments to channel the general magic that the witches & wizards already have. It's like focussing the magical energy on a particular spell or task..

Yup...I already said that instead of using a wand, maybe they are just using themselves as the instrument to focus their power...
