McGonagall is a Quidditch player??

Postby Scellanis » Friday 24 January 2003 6:44:06pm

well im now convinced she or one of her relatives was a Quidditch player....

if you look closely when Hermione shows Ron and Harry the Quidditch Trophey in the Philosopher's Stone movie...the plaque just above James Potter and to right of the screen says M. G. McGonagall.

is that her....was she a student at the same time as James Potter or is that one of her relatives

now if she was a Quidditch player it might explain her enthusiasm for the sport in the books...the way she doesnt punnish Harry for flying when told not to but automatically gives him the best spot on the team...anything else and shed be like losing points and detention...but not for flying when hes told not to....

and then she somehow manages to get that brilliant nimbus 2000 broom for him....not just a broom becuase he doesnt have one...no its the best broom available at the time

what do you think??
is the name just a coincidence??

I don't know. I doubt that it was Minerva, considering she is quite a bit older than James or Lily would be. Maybe the people in the movie just need a name to fill up some space. As for her having a realative, it could be possible, though there was no mention of her in the book.

yeah but Rowling was supervising them....she must have told them what the rest of the names would be....i mean if they were filling in spaces i doubt shed have let em use M G McGonagall considering that suggests Minerva McGonagall if it wasnt something shed planned...

and how do u know what age Minerva McGonagall is....and how old r james and sirius??

in book 3 she talks of pettigrew at school...therefore she was either a teacher or a student when James was at school...she doesnt have to have been in the same year as james....

u know she does get very emotional when she finds out james and lily r dead...not what id expect of a teacher...more like a friend......

just because she looks old in the film doesnt mean she is.....i still think maybe she was in 7th year when james was in second or something.....

I'm betting this was just an added bit of nonsense for the film - or another McGonagall, at any rate...not Minerva.

Besides, that same plaque in the film said that James Potter was a Seeker, when Rowling said in one of the books that he was a Chaser.

hmm....where does it say that cos so far ive only found mention that james was a quidditch player

but im sure i heard mention that j k rowling added a few extra bits to the movies for the book fans like the suggestion lucius malfoy tries to use the avada kadavra curse on harry at the end of cos.....what if james being a seeker and mcgonagall being a quidditch player r one of those little extras she added into the movies

My mistake, Rowling revealed in this interview that James was a Chaser:
http://www.scholastic.com/harrypotter/a ... cript2.htm

According to the same interview, Rowling says that McGonagall is around 70 or so. If this is true, how could she play on the same team as James Potter, who obviously was nowhere near that age?

Hey, Sonkem:

There's a list and links to a bunch of cool JKR interviews with a lot of other info in them, if you wanna check 'em out. Good reading. :D

Cheers.

btw - The new Theories section was a great idea. :D

I have just moved some theories from the Rumours section... Oh, really, it is sometimes so hard to tell, what should be considered a rumour and what a theory, but anyway, at least there are some more things here now to discuss...

u knoe... when i first read this thread, i thought McGonagall?! QUIDDITCH?! Sonkem's off her birdwire...

but now I'll have to give u credit Sonkem, cuz i don't think anyone else has come up with this b4... full credit!!

I think that plaque in the trophy case honours the Gryffindor captains who led their house to victory in the Hogwarts Quidditch cups.

the one on the left shows King; but above it it says 1969

the one on the right shows 1971 - M. G. McGonagall... nuff said!!

Obviously for theatrical reasons, Charlie Weasley wasn't included (Ron would have taken up more dialogue) and James Potter was changed from Chaser to Seeker.

Suuuure makes starting this Theories forum worthwhile :D

plus mcgonagall pulled harry and wood out of class. i mean, come on, mcgonagall pulling students out of class?! quidditch must be pretty important to her. i think there's a whole lot we don't know about minerva, quite a bit hidden under that bun :-)

well, actually, hate to spoil it on yah, but the idea is from www.skboards.net. don't worry, i enjoy borrowing theories from there too. :-) to read more replies on it... [url]http://skboards.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=451{/url]

to reply to that, the Chris Columbus said that Rowling had as little to do with the movie- she only went to the set once for PS/SS and not at all for CoS. he said she just left it all up to them. but i do think it's rather coincidental, and why would they have randomly picked that name for the trophy??
