The Marauder's Map

Postby tiggirl » Tuesday 8 June 2004 6:05:26am

Ok, I just watched PoA and something struck me. In the book, Fred and George have had the Marauder's Map since their first year. Ron's had scabbers since his first year. So, why didn't the twins ever notice Peter Pettigrew hanging around Ron? I understand that probably, when they used the map, they were mostly off by themselves planning mischief but in 3 years, they've never seen ron and peter on the map together? I just think it's kind of odd.

It is odd, and I can't think of an explanantion other than they were just careless and missed it.

I reckon Fred and George may well have seen Peter on the map, but they probably didnt know who he was so took no notice of it. They probably thought it was just some random guy from their year.

Yes but it might have seemed rather odd to Fred and George that Peter appeared to be standing on Ron which is what the map would have shown.

Hmmm interesting point.

However, the purpose for Fred and George to use the Maarauder's Map is to see where the teachers especially Snape and the caretaker Filch and his cat, Mrs Norris are before they carry out their yet another prank. I don't suppose Fred and George will be interested in their little brother, Ron although they might be more interested in their older brother, Percy.

And not only that, everyone will be shown on the map. I don't think it is that enjoyable to read every single name shown!

I agree with Choki, Fred & George probably where too busy when using to notice, and I doubt that they used the map often enough during class hours to notice "Peter Pettigrew" as the only person in Griffindor tower.

I think the general public only knew Sirius 'killed' 13 people. What they doesn't know was Peter Pettigrew was one of them.

Maybe it was a sensational news when Sirius was caught, but more than a decade had gone and nobody like to mention the dark times in Wizarding world. It's not a surprise the twins had no idea who Peter Pettigrew was. A faint one perhaps but not a fresh one like what Harry had in PoA (according to the movie)

It doesn't seem that Ron always carried Scabbers with him anyway. The RAT  basically had the run of school and grounds. What I find a little distressing is that in something like ten years at Hogwarts, first with Percy and then with Ron, Mrs. Norris never mangaed to catch and eat Scabbers for the RAT  he is!!!

I kinda wondered that too..........Maybe Fred and George didn't know who Peter was ,and alotta people knew about Sirius "killing" Peter. But Hogwarts is a pretty big place, and that map is pretty big too, and they were probably more worried about Filtch, Snape, Mcgonigal showing up on the map.

Hi Fred and welcome to B&O and most importantly welcome to Gryffindor!!!

When Fred and George gave the map to Harry they told him that Filch had never figured out how to use it. And even if he did know; being a squib he didn't have a wand to tap it and say: "I solomly swear to be up to no good"

a very good question. however, 5 years they had it, right? did it say that they knew how to work it all along? i dunno. but mine is a dumb excuse simply because i'd have chucked it after two years if i didn't know how to work it.
