I Challenge You . . .

Postby Hermione » Thursday 20 February 2003 2:41:51pm

To use proper English whenever you can. I've already said this before somewhere else, but in an age where chat abbreviations (such as u, dis, dat, etc., etc., etc.) are becoming more and more widespread, don't you think the best way to honor J.K. Rowling is by continuing to use the language she wrote Harry Potter in, that is, proper English? After all, Harry didn't say "I luv Quidditch, it's da best", did he?

So, I challenge you to this, and it's your choice whether you want to follow or not.

oh shoot...ill never manage that....its a habbit i picked up in a yahoo chess and no matter how hard i try i still revert back to abbreviations and no capital letters because its quicker and i post so much.....itd take me twice as long cos id have to double check every post and correct it....lol

see my theory section posts...i tried it there and keep switching about several times in a post....lol

besides english is definately not my strong point....as in punctuation and spelling mostly......

i could try but i bet i wouldnt manage it....id forget

Does that mean we have to use capitals? I can do that a little, like at the beginning of sentences but i usually don't capitalize it when i say 'i'. lol. and I don't often capitalize the begiinings either... but i only shorten things like because and whatever and i try not to do that too much except when talking on im. so i will not use slang like :u, nm, w/ev, but i can't promise anything about the capitals... lol...

english? darn it... i was so bent on improving my french... :(

Well, okay, fine. It doesn't have to be grammatically correct English . . . I guess it's okay to just not use chat abbreviations.

Bah humbug. ;)

I do agree that it takes a while not to use a little slang when typing. I mean, it's so much easier to type cos than because. However, using words like dis or dat is really weird.

i really cant help it though...i dont notice i do it, its just automatic because ive been typing like that for 2 years now....

my main problem is my inability to use sentences...but thats because i cant do punctuation so i never know when im supposed to end one or use a comma so i just take the easy option and put a string of dots between my thoughts...lol

i get messed up on things like they are and their and there and stuff too

i dont think i use any silly slang words like dis and dat because i cant stand them but i do use 'like' too much and i use zoinks, jinkies and yikes because im turning into scooby doo characters.... :-?

i dont think ill ever work out punctuation and half the time im typing with one hand which means ill never bother with capitals, i only bother with them when im using 2 hands but i still tend to miss them

i think im a lost cause really

Well, I've got to agree with Hermione. It's a whole lot easier to read and understand posts written properly rather than with over-use of shortenings and incorrect letter replacements. Anyone can write incorrectly, it doesn't take cleverness or anything to do that.

I'm not saying everything needs to be abolutely 100% correctly spelled and grammatically perfect, and a few standard shortenings (like lol which I must admit I often use) are OK with reasonable measure, but constant abbreviations and letter-replacements can just look stupid and annoying.
