When and How You Got the New Book (NO SPOILERS!!)

Postby Lizzy Bennet » Sunday 22 June 2003 9:41:45pm

As some of you may know, the 5th book was pre-ordered and paid for by me, my brother, and my boyfriend for my mother as a belated Mother's Day gift (the other gift was "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" on DVD). I was getting all sorts of teased by everyone who thought that I really convinced my brother and boyfriend to help me buy the book so I could get my hands on it myself!

Now, I won't lie when I say I was quite chuffed that my mother planned on letting me read it first when it got here on June 21 (which, coincidentally, the book didn't show up on the 21st until late in the afternoon! ). So, you may be wondering, how have I managed to finish reading it if I got it so late (or even, finished reading it at all so soon?? :o )? Well, I didn't get it at the 'Harry Potter' party on June 20th (because my mother felt we didn't need two new copies [we could wait for a second when it became cheaper, not to mention she wants to get the CDs, and there's only so much money to be spent!] and I thought the pre-ordered copy would be here on the 21st early!). So, when I woke up on June 21st and it hadn't come by mid-morning, I couldn't stand it!

And then, coming up the stairs, with a shy, happy smile on her face was my mother . . . with the new book and a 'Harry Potter' magazine for me. I thought the book had been delivered and I was still sleeping, but she said that it hadn't . . . that the copy she was giving me was one she and my father woke up really early to go get at the store for me so I could read when I woke up! AWWWWWWWW! I hugged her and cried a little cause I'm soppy like that!

So, I read nearly non-stop . . . still managed to eat, drink, communicate, and get things done, but I was hooked! I also knew, since I've just applied for a job, that once I get an interview and hopefully start working, I'd have a lot less time to read, as well as everytime I put down the book for any substantial amount of time, I lost my momentum. :-? For me, personally, and everyone is different, I felt I enjoyed and understood the book more in uniterrupted stretches rather than reading the book bit by small bit. As I've said before, to each their own style and method. :) I'm the type to re-read books I enjoy several times, and I'm sure there's lots I missed and will better understand on a second reading (which I'm sure I'll do soon!), which will be much slower and evenly paced :D . . . I'm looking forward to it and posting here (in the book 5 sections) with all of you!

How and when did you get and how and when did you read the book? As I said in my title, there shouldn't be any spoilers in this thread, as I've mentioned nothing about content, and I can't imagine why anyone else would. I just thought it'd be fun to share our stories of how we got our copy and what we did. :D Hope you lot enjoyed it as much as I did!

well on saturday i got up early despite having a seriously bad cold and my parents took me and my little sister into dumfries early on to get our books...suzy had hers pre-ordered from the cheapest place in town but i couldnt get one ordered and they had sold out of extra copies by the time i got there...i eventually got the next cheapest copy i could find from Tesco.....we both started reading it in the car on the way back

suzy finished it on sunday night, i finished it on monday at 3pm cos i had a cold so i couldnt read so fast

my big sister had hers pre-ordered from the museum shop of the place she works at (i mean she works at Wordsworth's house called Dove Cottage and he wrote poetry so i suppose its quite relevant for their shop)

Well, I preordered my book from Amazon.

But I still managed to get a glimpse of the Midnight Party. I went there at like 10pm and it look like a lot of fun. Buuuut there were all these little kids and if I would have a little kid with me at that point - I would stay there. So I left at 11pm. :(

And then I wasn't at home on Saturday and came back on Sunday. And guess what? My sister took it and started reading it! And the only reason why I preordered my book was

because my mother felt we didn't need two new copies

Yes!

So now Im slowly reading it (i have just 1-2 hours after work) So this will take a while.

Well I went to the Broadway shopping centre in Sydney. The was is Collins Booksellers on the top floor. I went in there. There wasn't a line but plenty of people where waiting to get the book. The people behind a dedicated counter where holding a list of names and ticking them off as each costomer got the book. It was retailed at $AU 29. I didn't preorder so I assumed I couldn't get it from there. So I poped down stairs to K-mart(department store), grabbed a copy of the shelves and bought it fot $AU 27.95. I guess pre-ordering costs a dollar extra. I suppose they give better shopping bags and maybe some free candy.

i preordered my book and it came on the 21. VERY sadly and unfortunately, i have actually started reading it until today (wednesday) because i was in another state for a week and a half! so i was sitting at someone else's house while my book was being carried up to my doorstep, was carefully carried into my room, and set neatly on my bed. but, when i finally came home, i said my hellos to my family, walked into my room, screamed, and tore open the cardboard packaging on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix like a madwoman! i walked into the living room beaming joyfully and my sister and cousins thought i had lost my mind. (which, come to think of it, i probably had :) ) i haven't finished it yet (sadly, im only on chapter six) but i am working my way there! i just felt i needed to take a break and come on these forums. it's horrible only starting the beloved book after most people here have finished it! but... i will soon catch up :D

On Saturday I went to the British Book Shop, where you can always find Harry Potter Books in English, but they only had prereserved copies and said I should wait for about 10 days to get mine if I reserved it then... It was quite frustrating. Then I went to another shop, but they were closed on Saturday, so I only bought the book on monday afternoon... It has cost me EUR 25.60 and later my boyfriend told me he had seen it cost only EUR 16, but it wasn't important for me anymore - I was just glad I got my book sooner than in 10 days!

I work at a bookstore, so I brought my copy home on Friday afternoon, the 20th, when I got off work. Didn't start reading it till later that night, though, since I was still in the middle of re-reading GoF and had to finish that one first!

Lol, we have the same topic in the Slytherin CR, so I'll just copy and paste what I wrote in there. My fingers are too sleepy to type the whole thing out again...

I got to Barnes&Noble at about nine and realised that I was about four hours late. People had been there lining up since five! So I waited on-line for about an hour to get a ticket syaing that I had pre-ordered my book. Afterwards, I walked around for awhile, looking in awe at the amount of people who had shown up! There were hundreds of little kids dressed as Harry and Hermione, but a serious lack of Draco Malfoys. There was one man dressed as Snape and he looked exactly like Rickman in the movie. I kept having to look to make sure it really wasn't him. There was also some guy, whoch had to have been about my age, dressed as Pettigrew, with the silver hand and everything. Which is all good and fine, except he decided to wear a skin-tight wizard-dress-thing. :o Ugh, it was disgusting. Every where I went, I saw icky skin-tight-guy.

Then I went and watched the costume contest, which ended with some blonde girl winning for her costume as Hermione. Maybe it's just me, but I thought Hermione had brown hair. Am so dissapointed that I didn't go dressed as anyone. :(

They also had a wand-making station and some face-paiting. I had to exercise extreme self control in not having lightning bolts painted all over my body. We didn't have and HP shakes, but Starbucks rocked my socks. Yay for caramel machiattos!

So when it got to be about 11:30, they began calling out numbers and letting us line up to get the books. I saw this kid who looked quite like Draco and was unable to move independently for the rest of the night. He was v., v. pretty...

And then it was midnight! And the rest is history. :D

Ordered mine from www.bol.com
and received it on the 21th as promised; too bad I had to work that day, so I couldn't start reading untill say 5 pm! and the week after that, last week, I had an week of exams at school, though that didn't stop me reading: ) but I'm glad that I didn't the have the chance to read it in one big session, because now the happy feeling of reading the new HP lasted longer !
